75 Years Ago, Lethbridge Board of Trade Renamed
In 1947, the Lethbridge Board of Trade was renamed the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce.
On 22 October 1947, C.A. Bryant presented the following resolution to the Board of Trade at its regular meeting. “Whereas in the past this association has been known as the Lethbridge Board of Trade, Inc.
And whereas the trend in practice across the Dominion of Canada is to use the term Chamber of Commerce
And whereas Lethbridge exists in close proximity to the United States and many of its contacts are with our neighbors to the south, who almost exclusively use the term Chamber of Commerce.
Therefore be it resolved that wherever ‘the Board’, ‘the Board of Trade’, or ‘the Lethbridge Board of Trade, incorporated’ appears in the by-laws of the Lethbridge Board of Trade, they be amended to read ‘the Chamber’, ‘the Chamber of Commerce’ and ‘Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Incorporated’, respectively.” The resolution was endorsed unanimously by the members present. Following the meeting, a petition then was sent to the Governor General requesting that the Lethbridge Board of Trade be permitted to change its name. In December 1947 permission was given and the name formally changed.
