Parking Meters Installed, 1963

Sixty years ago, in 1963, the City of Lethbridge first installed parking meters in the downtown for on-street parking.

People weren’t happy to see them. They were called unsightly eyesore, hazards to pedestrians and an irritant to motorists.

In a letter to the editor, N.E. Kloppenborg wrote that if the downtown businessmen brought in the parking meters, they would have no parking problem at all as everyone would go to businesses in the suburbs.

Some believed it was unfair to charge parking to farmers who had to come into the city to get their mail from the post office.

Other writers encouraged everyone to hoard their pennies and nickels, as the meters wouldn’t make change.

Some businesses supported the meters as employees from other businesses often parked in front of their buildings all day, making it impossible for customers to find parking. While others were hopeful that

parking meters would ensure a turnover of parking ensuring spaces were available throughout the day.

These were just some of the concerns and hopes expressed in 1962 and 1963 when the City of Lethbridge discussed bringing in, and then finally brought in, parking meters.

The parking meters for on-street parking went into operation on 3 September 1963. While it is still necessary to pay for on-street parking in downtown Lethbridge, the parking meters were replaced by parking kiosks a few years ago.

Pronghorn: The Fastest Animal in the Western Hemisphere

Did You Know?

The Pronghorn ( Antilocapra americana) is an even -toed ungulate mammal and the only living member of the family Antilocapridae. Its speed has been reliably recorded up to 70 km/h, which makes it the fastest land animal in North America.

It gets its name from its horns, which are a cross between horns and antlers. They consist of a bony core with a keratinous sheath and are shed annually. In the males, the horns are pronged and can grow up to 30 cm in

length, the horns of the females are rarely pronged and often not longer than their ears.

Pronghorns have long, black eyelashes that function as sun visors. Their eyesight and depth perception are both outstandingly developed. At a range of 5 kilometres, they are capable of noticing the tiniest of movements.

Pronghorns have hollow hair that helps to insulate them from the cold. They don't drink much water and rely on plant consumption for hydration. Their lifespan is typically up to 10 years.

BE FIT FOR LIFE Maintaining Motivation

Set Yourself Up for Success this Fall!

Staying motivated and consistent is one of the most common hurdles people experience when it comes to physical activity. Life is busy with work, family, and friends, but it is still important to make time for your health. Here are a few tips to help increase motivation:

Find something you are passionate about! Exercise should be something you look forward to doingnot something you dread. There are an abundance of ways to stay active, so find something that suits you best and sparks your interest. Some different activities you could try are yoga, swimming, tabata, HITT classes, or biking with family.

Recruit a workout partner! It is easy to find an excuse to not exercise when you are on your own, so find a friend that will hold you accountable.

Set SMART goals! These goals are specific, measurable, achieveable, relevant and timely. It is much easier to stay on track when there is a goal in mind to work towards. This could include training for a race or simply wanting to be able to do a pushup!

Sign up for a fitness class! This is a great way to try something new, stay consistent, and meet new people.

Stay motivated by setting yourself up for success towards a healthy lifestyle!

HOW TO FIND ADAPTIVE AND INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS if your child has additional

support needs

This article excerpt was published in the Lethbridge Sport Council online magazine --> lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/sportmatters

Having inclusive and adaptive recreational programs available is so important because it can help your child develop independence, build friendships, and increase confidence, all while having fun

While the words “adaptive” and “inclusive” are often interchanged when promoting programs for children with disabilities, they’re not the same. Adaptive programs are modified to make a program more accessible, while inclusive programs permit children with disabilities to join the same program. If you’re keen on one type of program over another, be sure to ask the sport organization or program supervisor which is used.

Tips for choosing a program to suit your child’s needs, while ensuring they have fun

Take a deep dive into the program and scan the interpersonal skills of the instructor: How do they manage conflict? How do they treat the children? What type of teaching or coaching style do they use? All children are unique and their needs differ What one child might benefit from, another might not and that’s normal. Trial and error is a common way of getting into a new sport, especially for children with differing abilities

Take a look at the physical environment: Can your child access the change rooms, bathrooms, and main rooms being used? Are there harsh lights or loud music playing? Will your child have challenges in accessing this environment? If a child is uncomfortable being in a space, they won’t enjoy it as much as they could, even if the program seems perfect.

Look into the program support structure: What is the ratio of support staff? Are aids allowed to accompany a child?

Look at the difficulty and the adaptability: Would your child have trouble playing these games and practicing these skills? Would they find the rules or lengthy instructions draining? If they cannot keep up, can the program or lessons be modified to better suit their needs?
