PEOPLE IN SPORT

No excuses - Jay Berner

On April 15, Johan “Jay” Berner was awarded the 2025 Lethbridge Spor t Council Achievement Award in the category of Athlete with a Disability, an athletic performance award.

Today, Jay is a student at the Lethbridge Polytechnic with big dreams, but it wasn’t too long ago he was a 16 year old high school student who was “ so full of excuses and I used by disability as an excuse not to par ticipate” until one day the strength and conditioning coach at LCI, Cory Gillespie, changed his life and helped him realize “it wasn’t just a disability he had, but an oppor tunity to experience life in a different way”

Fast forward to 2025, and Jay earned a seat representing the Rowing Canada Aviron Para National Team His team saw success at both national and international levels They won gold at the 2025 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, capturing the Justin Fryer Trophy, and earned eighth place at the 2025 World Rowing Championships. Training out of Lethbridge and competing with the PR3 coxed mixed 4, Jay quickly developed into a key member of his crew through dedication, focus, and long hours on and off the water

Beyond his results, he is recognized for his leadership, integrity, and inclusiveness, creating a welcoming environment for teammates and inspiring the next generation of athletes with limb differences His commitment to spor t, community, and personal growth makes him a respected competitor and a role model in the rowing community.

ROLLER HOCKEY

A Sport of Speed, Skill, and Hockey Beyond the Ice

If you love hockey but want to play beyond the winter season, roller hockey offers a fast-paced and exciting alternative. Played on inline skates instead of ice skates, roller hockey brings the same energy and teamwork of traditional hockey to indoor and outdoor rinks, and sport courts Here’s what makes it stand out:

No Ice Required: Roller hockey is played on smooth surfaces like concrete, asphalt, or sport tiles, making it more accessible in communities without ice rinks.

Inline Skates: Players use inline skates (rollerblades) instead of ice skates, requiring balance, agility, and strong edge control for quick turns and stops.

Different Game Styles: There are two main versions inline hockey, which closely resembles ice hockey, and ball hockey, often played with a ball instead of a puck.

Fast-Paced Play: With fewer stoppages, the game is quick, continuous, and high-scoring.

Skill Development: Roller hockey helps players build stickhandling, passing, and spatial awareness skills that transfer to other sports, including ice hockey

The big differences: Inline hockey is played 4-on-4, with no icing and no offsides. That makes it a much different game strategically and means players get more touches on the puck which increases creativity and play-making.

Play Anywhere, Anytime

With no need for ice, roller hockey can be played in a variety of spaces from outdoor courts to indoor gyms making it an accessible option for communities of all sizes. You can even play it out in the street, just don't wear your indoor wheels outdoor!

Fun, Fast, and Social

Roller hockey brings players together in a relaxed, energetic environment Whether in organized leagues or casual games, it’s a great way to stay connected with teammates and enjoy the sport in a new way.

Why Try Roller Hockey?

Roller hockey is fun, affordable, and easy to learn. It encourages physical activity, teamwork, and creativity, whether you’re new to the sport or looking to complement your ice hockey skills.
