ABOUT THE POOLS

What is happening at our pools this season? The Recreation Excellence leadership team is excited to present to you exciting improvements for the new year. The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities geared towards all ages.

What are the improved programs?

• U18 Rec Swim - A swim time geared towards youth! It’s the perfect opportunity to swim, socialize, and have fun in the water with your friends. Everyone is welcome!

• Sensory Swim - Inclusive approach to activities that recognizes and caters to the specific sensory needs of individuals.

• Swim & Splash - Family play time in the tots pool for toddlers and preschoolers!

What do you offer for fit and jog classes? What can I do during leisure swim?

Nicholas Sheran offers a total of 9 weekly aqua fit classes, ensuring you stay active and fit, while Stan Siwik provides 8 weekly aqua jog classes, for those looking to exercise in the deeper end of the pool. Fritz Sick offers a wide array of classes from aqua jog and aqua fit to aqua Zumba and senior aqua fit.

What is leisure swim, you ask? It’s a time for you to swim at your own comfortable and leisurely pace. It’s also an excellent way to get a gentle form of exercise. Float, tread water, or swim as slow or as fast as you like – it’s all about relaxation and enjoyment.

Can I rent the facility for an event?

You certainly can! We offer private facility rentals at a great price, available outside of our normal hours of operation.

Do you offer any other courses aside from swimming lessons?

We sure do! Stan Siwik and Fritz Sick Pool offer Canadian Swim Patrol. The Canadian Swim Patrol program consists of Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol. Structured the same as a swimming lesson, these courses are an excellent introductory to lifeguard knowledge and skills.

Stan Siwik also offers in-house courses whether you’re looking to register or recertify, we’ve got you covered. Mark your calendars for November 14th as our lesson and advanced course registration will be open at 9:00am!

Our mission is to make sure our community is up to date on Alberta’s Health and Safety Standards. The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code has undergone changes in its Part 11 (standard first aid) section, effective from March 31, 2023. Standard First Aid is Intermediate First Aid, the new names are in line with the CSA Standard Z1210-17 23. The changes were made to ensure that the names of the courses are consistent with the national standard.

How can I find out more information?

Did you know?

Prohibition Ends in Alberta, 1924

In 1916, prohibition became the law in Alberta.

In 1923, the debate flared up again and a plebiscite was held on 5 November to decide whether prohibition would continue.

The Moderation League of Alberta supported Option D. Under Option D , liquor would once again be available for purchase, but sale of all liquors would be by or t hrough government vendors; beer had to be consumed only in licensed premises or in private residences, and wines and spirits could only be purchased in limited quantities.

Option D was chosen by the voters and went into effect in May 1924 with a new Liquor Act.

In May 1924 Lethbridge’s first Albert a Liquor Control Board store opened to serve the community. M any Lethbridge hotels underwent

expansions and renovations around then to be able to meet the requirements of the new Liquor Act.

TROYANDA UKRAINIAN DANCE CLUB - Is a not-for-profit organization with members that volunteer their time with a shared passion for Ukrainian dance and culture. Currently in their 29th year, the Troyanda Ukrainian Dancers have over 60 members ranging in age 3 to timeless. Troyanda’s year-end concert, “Glory to Ukraine!/Слава Україні!”, will be held at the Yates Memorial Centre Sunday May 26 at 2:00pm. Lively dances, colourful costumes, and energetic music representing various regions of Ukraine will be presented for all of Lethbridge to enjoy.

Troyanda’s mandate of promoting and preserving the art of Ukrainian dance and culture in Southern Alberta remains as important as ever as the war in Ukraine continues. Troyanda thanks the community for their ongoing support and hopes that many will come to watch a great show while showing their support for Ukraine at the same time. Ticket prices will be by donation, where guests can choose the amount they wish to pay per ticket, with a portion of the proceeds going to support Troyanda’s Ukrainian Newcomer Fund. Through ongoing support from the community, Troyanda offers Ukrainian newcomers an opportunity to take dance classes and join in club activities at a reduced rate. It allows Ukrainian newcomers a chance to proudly preserve their culture through dance while also sharing in a sense of community in their new home. This year, Troyanda is thrilled to have eight Ukrainian newcomers dancing in the show.

Troyanda is always excited to have new dancers join the club, whether they are from Ukraine or right here in Lethbridge. Our most experienced dancers, Troyanda’s Ensemble, will be sharing the popular “Hopak” dance which is considered the heartbeat of Ukraine. With its lively display of colour, spins, and tricks, you won’t want to miss it!

Spring Clean your body Refresh, Renew,

and Detoxify

While many are familiar with 'spring cleaning' practices around the house, it is also important to do the same to our bodies. Detoxification is the process by which the body eliminiates or neutralizes toxins and waste that can accumulate in the tissues and organs.

Diet: A great way to detoxify the body is to focus on consuming whole, nutrient dense foods such as leafy greens, berries, and herbs. Adequate fibre is also important to aid in regular waste removal from the body. Try to avoid processed foods that are high in sugar and unhealthy fats to ensure there is no additional inflammation being added to the body.

Hydration: Water is essential for maintaining proper hydration. Without adequate hydration, organs such as the liver and kidneys are not able to efficiently filter toxins and excrete them from the body. Aim to drink 2-3L of water every day.

Sweating: Sweating allows the body to eliminate toxins and waste products through the skin. Participating in moderate-vigorous physical activity can promote sweating. Another way sweating can be promoted is through the use of saunas and steam rooms. However, it is always important to rehydrate after excessive sweating!

Start a Movement, Be the First Follower

A common theme among non-profit organizations, including those in the sport community, is the lack of volunteers. We need is a movement. A sweeping way to share that volunteering is good for the community and the volunteer, it has real, life-changing implications. A movement to spread the message that volunteering can, and should, be fun.

If you’ve never seen the video “First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy”, please take a minute to go watch it before you read on. Even if you’ve seen it again, I encourage you to watch it again The video is from a Ted Talk by Derek Sivers in 2010.

There are some SIX lessons from that video, all of which could be about dancing, or they could be about sport volunteering. Here are the top 3 lessons we took away from that talk:

1.

A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he's doing is so simple, it's almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow!

3.

Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow. Notice the leader embraces him as an equal, so it's not about the leader anymore - it's about them, plural. Notice he's calling to his friends to join in. It takes guts to be a first follower! You stand out and brave ridicule, yourself. Being a first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. The first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the first follower is the spark that makes the fire.

2. The 2nd follower is a turning point: it's proof the first has done well. Now it's not a lone nut, and it's not two nuts. Three is a crowd and a crowd is news (and a movement).

Read the rest of the 6 lessons, and watch the
