ABOUT THE POOLS - NEW CHANGES

Our top priority is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience at our facilities. Safety is paramount when it comes to pools and waterslides, and taking necessary precautions can greatly minimize the chances of accidents and injuries. This summer, our Recreation Excellence leadership team aims to emphasize the importance of implementing proper safety measures, waterslide rules, preventing contamination, and following facility policies.

Water slides add a huge element of fun to swimming pools, but to ensure the good times last, safety must always be the first consideration. In accordance with the manufacturer rules and best practices the waterslides are ONE RIDER SLIDES, the slider must be 42 inches tall and able to ride in a supine position.

Why am I not allowed to ride double with my child on the waterslide?

The force and speed of a double rider can cause riders to be ejected from the slide or lose control during the ride and collide with each other. The increased speed may make it more difficult to control movements and react to unexpected situations, leading to injuries and accidents.

In the event of an emergency or if one rider becomes distressed or disoriented during the ride, the presence of a second rider can complicate the situation. It may be challenging to provide immediate assistance or evacuate both riders safely, potentially delaying rescue efforts and increasing the risk of further harm.

We appreciate your understanding as we make great efforts to ensure all guests enjoy a safe ride on the waterslides.

Can I use the Splash Pad area with my kids?

The slides are for children 10 years of age and younger. Parents are more than welcome to assist their children on the splash pad structure; however, parents are not permitted to ride down the slide on the splash pad structure.

What is a safety check?

Staff will inspect the pool basin for hazards and contamination. Safety checks are conducted at 3:30pm and 6:30pm and require everyone to come out of the water and stay behind the “yellow line” for 10 – 15 minutes. We recommend taking this time to hydrate, re-apply sunscreen, or use the washroom.

What is a bag check?

Our facility strictly enforces policies and rules, such as bag checks, to maintain a secure environment for all visitors. Conducting bag checks at entry helps prevent prohibited and restricted items from entering the premises, to ensure our guests have a safe and fun overall experience.

Why can’t I go swimming right after eating food?

We advise you to wait at least 15 – 20 minutes after eating before you enter the pool. This allows your body to properly digest food and prevent fecal and vomit contaminations. By following these guidelines, we can collectively maintain a clean and healthy swimming environment for everyone to enjoy.

How can I find out more information?

You are welcome to send us an email at leth@recreationexcellence.com or contact our facility for any further questions you may have.

Anniversary of Fort Macleod

From July 1 to 3, 1924, the community of Macleod celebrated its 50 th anniversary and used the opportunity to showcase its founding in the fall of 1874 as a North-west Mounted Police fort.

The Lethbridge Herald reported that 15,000 people attended Macleod’s 1924 Jubilee, 5000 of whom were from Lethbridge.

While many Lethbridgians likely made their way to Macleod by car or train, Mayor Hardie was flown to Macleod by Jock Palmer, as seen in the accompanying photograph.

There were many events in Macleod over those three days including a pageant that depicted the history of the town and a parade which showcased many aspects of that history, including a large contingent of Mounted Police veterans.

This year Fort Macleod is gearing up for its 150th celebration with many activities, concerts and more. Hopefully it will be a celebration to be remembered, just like the 1924 ones.

arts in LETHBRIDGE

What’s Happening in Lethbridge?

Check out the AAC Art Events Calendar to find out!

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge (AAC) is a vibrant hub for arts and culture in southern Alberta. Established in 1958, the AAC’s mission is to encourage, coordinate, and promote the arts in Lethbridge and the surrounding area. One of our standout offerings is the Art Events Calendar, which keeps track of a diverse range of creative happenings throughout Lethbridge and Area. From gallery exhibitions and concerts to film nights, performances, artist talks, and special workshops, this calendar is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the arts. If you’re a member, you can even submit your own art-related events to be included. Explore Lethbridge’s rich cultural scene by checking out the Art Events Calendar on the Allied Arts Council website.

Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society (LSPS) is a non-profit theatre group, established in 2012, bringing high-quality performances of Shakespeare’s plays to audiences in Southern Alberta. All of the actors and creative teams are local, drawn from both the ULethbridge Theatre program and from local community theatre. LSPS has been bringing Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies to Lethbridge and area for the past 13 seasons, including during the first Covid summer (with actors spaced 2 metres apart, in Nikka Yuko Garden). This year, the play is ‘Twelfth Night’, directed by Cole Fetting and Sharon Peat, with gorgeous period costumes designed by the talented Amanda Epp.

“If music be the food of love, play on”, are the words spoken by the lovesick Duke Orsino at the start of ‘Twelfth Night’. Love, in all its forms, is the main theme in Shakespeare’s well-crafted romantic comedy. Other themes - deception, disguise, fate, and social status- add to the satisfying complexity of this play, including the richly comic characters of Toby Belch, Andrew Aguecheek, and Malvolio. ‘Twelfth Night’ will open on Thursday, July 4, in Galt Gardens, the original home of Shakespeare in the Park performances. There will be a total of 16 performances in the 2024 season - in the downtown venues of the park, Casa and Festival Square, but also in Legacy Park, Nikka Yuko, the Empress Theatre, the Coutts Centre, and The Venue in High River.

Financial support comes from three main sources: grants from the Heart of our City, Lethbridge Community Foundation, and Alberta Foundation for the Arts, support from local small businesses - like the amazing community-minded Analog Books, and donations from audiences after each show. The audience donations are a vital part of funding - one-third of the total each season. LSPS is introducing a digital payment option this summer, and hope audiences will respond generously, allowing them to continue to provide honorariums to every member of their talented and hard-working cast and crew!

For information on performance dates and profiles of some of the actors and creative team, check out their Facebook page Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society, or Instagram account @Shakespeare_yql

Alberta's Endangered Flora

Did You Know?

① Western Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis ) is the only member of its family native to Western Canada. It is a federally protected species. The broken stems secrete a sticky substance, which forms cobweb-like strands when hardened, giving the plant its common name.

② Soapweed (Yucca glauca) is a long-lived perennial plant, in the Agave Family. It got its name because its roots contain a high concentration of lathering substances called saponins. When crushed and mixed in water, the

saponins produce a lather that can be used as a soap or a shampoo. At the northern extent of its range, it naturally occurs in two locations in the southeast corner of Alberta in the Milk River basin.

③ The Tiny Cryptanthe (Cryptantha minima), also known as little cat's-eye, is an annual vascular plant species found in semi-arid grasslands. Its identified range in Alberta is in the dry mixedgrass natural subregion. Cryptantha minima is threatened primarily by habitat alteration, such as cultivation, and urban development.

beating the burn A Guide to Safe Sun Exposure

Coming out of the winter blues, everyone is eager to spend time outside in the sunshine. There are many benefits to sun exposure, including mood enhancement, increased energy, and vitamin D synthesis. However, it is important to remember that sun exposure can result in serious health risk. Check out these sun safety tips:

Apply Sunscreen: A tale as old as time, but one that is often overlooked! It is important to apply SPF 30 or higher to the face and body multiple times throughout the day to ensure coverage and protection from the sun. Sunscreen plays an important role in decreasing the risk of skin cancer.

Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water throughout the day, especially in higher temperatures. Dehydation can occur quickly and can cause serious health concerns.

Monitor Sun Exposure: It is common to lose track of time when spending time outdoors. Be mindful of how long you have been outside and take frequent shade breaks. Stay alert for signs of redness or irritation - sunburns can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer, so it is important to protect your skin from excess UV exposure.
