Summer in Lethbridge is a special time of year, and I’m pleased to welcome residents and visitors alike to all that our community has to offer this July. Our city comes alive with activity, connection, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
This month, I encourage you to take part in some of our favourite local events, from lively community festivals and outdoor concerts to farmers’ markets and family-friendly celebrations across our neighbourhoods. These gatherings showcase the spirit of Lethbridge and the pride we share in calling this city home.
Lethbridge’s incredible park system is also a highlight of the season. Whether you’re strolling through the scenic paths of Henderson Lake Park, exploring the coulees, or enjoying a picnic in Legacy Park, there are countless ways to spend time outdoors. Nicholas Sheran Park and Indian Battle Park also offer beautiful spaces to relax, stay active, or gather with friends and family. Our recreation facilities, programs, and green spaces are here for everyoneproviding opportunities to stay healthy, engaged, and connected throughout the summer.
On behalf of City Council, I invite you to explore, participate, and make the most of everything Lethbridge has to offer this July. I hope you create lasting memories with family, friends, and neighbours.

What is happening at our pools?
The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta. Our team is committed to providing the community our best customer service, clean and safe facilities and activities for all ages.
Nicholas Sheran Pool closure
Nicholas Sheran Pool will close on August 4, with the final day of programming on August 2. The facility is expected to reopen in November 2026 following major upgrades, including a new HVAC system and annual maintenance.
During the shutdown, all programs will move to Stan Siwik Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Pool. Updated schedules will be posted at www. recex.ca/lethbridge.
Tidal Vipers JLC Summer camp
Dive into an exciting two-week camp where swimmers improve their strokes, build strength and endurance, and learn essential lifesaving skills! Participants will also get a fun introduction to Lifesaving Sport events, combining skill development with action-packed activities in and out of the water.

National Lifeguard - Pool Recertification $74.00

The objective of the NL Precert is to provide candidates an opportunity to review NL skills and knowledge and to provide education on new information.
Note: Must bring NL certification and current Intermediate First Aid Certification to the exam
Intermediate First Aid Recertification (formerly Standard) requires both theoretical and practical skill examinations. Those using another Alberta workplace-approved standard first aid as a prerequisite must show proof of current certification. If no longer current, individuals must attend the original course. Unsuccessful candidates in the recertification course must complete the original course.
Prerequisite(s): Must bring current Intermediate First Aid Certification
This 15 hour course prepares candidates an understanding of the lifesaving principles in the four components of water rescue education: judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness. *Note: Bronze Medallion is offered seperately from Bronze Cross
Prerequisite(s): Must be 13 years old and hold a Bronze Star Certification to course.
This 20 hour course begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as a lifeguard.

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. The Swim Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.

Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Education and Proficiency programs, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs. The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.

SwimAbilities® Instructor $167.50
SwimAbilities Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the SwimAbilities learn to swim program. The SwimAbilities® Instructor Course prepares Instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach candidates with specialized needs requiring additional support for skill development and safety routines.

Nicholas Sheran Pool extended shutdown
Nicholas Sheran Pool will be closed on August 4th and is expected to reopen in November 2026. The last day for programming will be Sunday, August 2nd.
This temporary closure will allow for facility upgrades, including the installation of a new HVAC system, as well as annual pool maintenance.
During this time, all programming will be relocated to Stan Siwik Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Henderson Pool. Updated schedules will be available at www.recex.ca/lethbridge.

Lesson Registration
• Registrations can be made online at lethbridge.ca/ swimming or by telephone/in-person Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
• Registration is on a first come first served basis.
• If registering by phone and no one answers please leave a message.
• Participants may register in a maximum of two (2) classes/session.
• Participants may waitlist in any class.
Preparing to Register
Create an account prior to registration at lethbridge.ca/swimming. If you do not have an account you will need the following:
• Name & birth date of account holder (Adult)
• Name & birth date of participants
• Home address, phone # and postal code
• Program level, session time and alternatives if class is full
• Payment information incl 3 digit CVV # on credit cards for phone registrations
Fees
Fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Cash, Debit, Visa, MC, Rec Ex Gift Card & Cheque are accepted in person. Cheques are payable to Recreation Excellence. Post dated cheques are not accepted. A $25 charge will be applied to all NSF cheques. Only Visa & MC are accepted for phone registrations. Visa & MC Debit cards are accepted online and in person.

Program cancellation
Programs with insufficient registration are subject to cancellation. Customers will be notified as soon as a decision regarding cancellation has been made. All efforts will be made to accomodate any registrants displaced by cancellations. A full refund or credit to account will be issued for courses cancelled by Recreation Excellence.
Withdrawls
• Withdrawals received more than fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the lesson set or course will not be subject to a withdrawal fee.
• Withdrawals made between five (5) and fourteen (14) days prior to the lesson start date will be subject to a 10% withdrawal fee. The remaining balance may be left on your account for future use or a refund may be requested.
• Refunds of less than $5.00 will remain on the account.
• You may withdraw and re-register into another program without penalty prior to five (5) days before the lesson start date.
• No refunds will be given if withdrawal is within five (5) days of the lesson start date.
Transfers
All transfers are subject to availability and may be made without penalty up to five (5) days prior to the lesson start date. Transfers made by Recreation Excellence will not incur a penalty. Any resulting increase in program fees due to the transfer must be paid by the customer at the time of transfer.

Withdrawals for medical / relocation reasons are permitted with no penalty prior to the lesson start date. Refunds for withdrawal after the lesson start date will result in a pro-rated refund or credit on account. Proof of medical / relocation must be provided within two (2) weeks of notification of withdrawal for refunds or credits to be issued.

Since 2012, the Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society has been making Shakespeare accessible to audiences across Southern Alberta through free outdoor performances and community-focused programming. What began as a vision to bring polished and engaging productions of Shakespeare’s plays to the region has grown into a beloved annual tradition.
Each summer, audiences gather in Galt Gardens Amphitheatre and Rotary Square at Casa to experience live theatre in an inviting outdoor setting. The Society also brings performances to venues including Legacy Park, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, The Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod, and The Venue in High River.
At the heart of the organization is a commitment to supporting local artists. Casts and creative teams are drawn from the ULethbridge theatre program and the broader community theatre scene. Through honorariums and mentorship opportunities with experienced directors, the Society provides meaningful artistic employment as well as professional development for emerging performers and theatre makers.
This season, audiences can enjoy King Lear, directed by Shelley Scott, opening July 2 in Galt Gardens. The production continues the Society’s tradition of presenting Shakespeare in ways that are accessible, entertaining, and visually striking. On August 8, the organization will also host its first-ever Fundraiser Gala at Casa, celebrating more than a decade of bringing classical theatre to the community.

Welcome July Artist in Residence Maisie Luo
This July, Casa welcomes Artist in Residence (AiR) Maisie Luo, a New York and Houston-based artist whose paintings, installations, and animations explore relationships between people and the natural world. During her residency, Luo will lead Nature as Motifs: Pattern Making on July 28 from 5-7pm, a hands-on workshop inspired by embroidery traditions from Southwestern China. Maisie’s residency will begin on July 2 and continue until July 30, when everyone is invited to an Open House to view Luo’s residency work.

A Great Place to Get Strong
While your kids play on the playground, fit in a full body strength workout.
Step Ups for legs, glutes and balance - Find a bench or platform and alternate stepping up and down with each leg 10-20 times.
Jumps for lower body strength and power - Find a platform that you can do a 2-foot jump onto, taking off and landing in a squat position Step back down and repeat 10 times.
Body Rows for back, shoulders and arms - Find a bar that is chest height or lower With a straight body position, hang below the bar and pull your chest to the bar 10-20 times.
Pull Ups - Find a bar overhead for these If you can’t quite make it, jump up and then lower yourself down with your arms Try 5-10 times
Push Ups - Find a platform or bar (or the ground) and pushup 20 times
Hanging Knee Tucks - Find an overhead bar you can hang f rom and pull your knees up to your chest 10-20 times Do this with straight legs for more challenge!

The recipient of the 2025 Servus Credit Union Outstanding Spor t Citizen at the Lethbridge Spor t Council Achievement Awards is Jaxen Brandt.
While Jaxen’s athletic accomplishments are impressive, it is his character that caught the attention of his coaches. Jaxen is relentless in his training, consistently being the first in the pool and the last out, and approaching every set with determination and a “never-give-up” attitude.

Jaxen also had a strong 2025 season with the Lethbridge Orcas Summer Swim Club, medaling at nearly every meet and qualifying for Summer Festivals, a provincial-level competition that requires meeting strict time standards. Jaxen’s commitment, effor t, and respect for others make him not only a fierce competitor but also a remarkable example of the spirit that makes spor t meaningful.

Canada’s National Summer Sport
Lacrosse is one of North America’s oldest sports, originating with Indigenous peoples long before organized sport existed. Traditionally known as “The Creators Game”, lacrosse was played for ceremony, healing, community connection, and spiritual purpose. Today, the sport continues to honour these roots while growing into a fast-paced, high energy game that can be enjoyed by athletes and communities across Canada.
Lacrosse is played using a long-handled stick with a netted pocket while teams work together to score on their opposing teams net. The two primary kinds of lacrosse are field lacrosse and box lacrosse. Field lacrosse is played outdoors on a large grass or turf field with 10 players per team. Box lacrosse is played indoors on a concrete ice-rink floor with 6 players per team

The train theme was a big hit with our playground testers (ages 1,2, and 3)! The train sound buttons, rocking seats, and climbing features inspired lots of imaginative play and adventure
Park Perks:
This playground offers a great variety of swings for different ages, nearby washrooms, picnic areas, and a smaller “mini train” playground is perfect for todlers. The nearby pond also makes for great bird watching!

Our park testers could’ve spent hours here! Between the playground, pond, walking paths, and shady picnic spotsthere are lots of ways to enjoy a full afternoon outdoors.
Pro Tip:
Bring a picnic blanket, or even a fishing rod! The nearby pond and green spaces make this park perfect for a longer family outing.
