arts in LETHBRIDGE arts feature The Allied Arts Council (AAC) of Lethbridge is thrilled to announce the Sounds Around Program, a new initiative designed to give local artists and arts groups access to professional grade sound equipment. This program is made possible through a generous $12,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, a dedicated non-profit that has been supporting local initiatives that strengthen the community since 1995. This program addresses a barrier for performers and performing arts groups in Lethbridge; access to quality sound equipment. The community can borrow a versatile sound system ideal for small concerts, pop-up comedy nights, readings, and an assortment of arts events. Users will require an initial orientation before using the equipment, and the AAC will also provide ongoing sound tech training. The Sounds Around Program will be launching in March 2026. Local artists and organizations are encouraged to become an AAC Member to acquire training and access to the equipment.
BIPOC Foundation
The Black, Indigenous and People Of Colour (BIPOC) Foundation is dedicated to amplifying the voices of artists through programming that prioritizes visibility, professional growth, and meaningful community engagement. Their latest initiative, Reel Talk + Black Movie Night, offers paid creative opportunities through two dynamic events under a shared programming umbrella. REEL Talk is a curated digital visual arts exhibition showcasing the work of BIPOC artists. Hosted at Casa on February 13, 2026, this digital installation transforms physical space into a platform for creativity and storytelling. The exhibition concludes with an opening reception, giving selected artists the opportunity to connect directly with audiences and fellow creatives. Black Movie Night complements REEL Talk as a dedicated film Visit artslethbridge.org to learn more screening event spotlighting works by BIPOC filmmakers. Held at the about the AAC. Southern Alberta Ethnic Association Multicultural Centre February 20, 2026, this event offers filmmakers the chance to present their creations in a curated, celebratory setting, engaging directly with the For Membership Form community that supports their work. The Foundation encourages artists and filmmakers to participate in Allied Arts Council one or both events, with financial compensation provided. Visual or of Lethbridge digital artwork submissions are considered for REEL Talk, while film 318 7 Street South submissions are considered for Black Movie Night. Through initiatives 403.320.0555 like these, the BIPOC Foundation ensures that Black, Indigenous and info@artslethbridge.org People of Colour’s creations are celebrated, supported, and seen.

Heart Healthy Habits Keeping Hearts Healthy for Physical and Emotional Well-being Keep your heart STRONG:
Your Heart is a Muscle! - Just like any muscle, it gets stronger with use and weakens without. That means doing activities and increase your heart rate like walking, climbing stairs, dancing, exercising and even housework help to build and strengthen your heart; it will be a stronger, more efficient pump!

BLOG After school, children often spend a lot of time doing homework, using technology, or watching TV, which can lead to too much sitting. Adding movement breaks, such as dancing or playing catch, helps improve circulation, brain activity, focus, executive functioning, and social-emotional skills, supporting overall well-being. Simple activities make it easy to get kids moving. Write In The Air With Flair gets children up on their feet, using big arm motions to “write” words in the air— turning homework time into an active learning moment. A Dance Party encourages everyone get goofy, and reenergize their bodies. Ball Toss adds a fun challenge while building fundamental movement skills, and can be easily adapted to different levels. Fun physical activity increases dopamine, boosts mood, and helps children stay on task while improving memory, attention, and social skills. According to Canada’s 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, children should get at least 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity each day, spend several hours in light activity, and limit sitting or screen time to no more than 2 hours. ARTISTIC SWIMMING
City of Lethbridge Recreation & Culture Guide - FEBRUARY
Did You Know?
A Sport of Creativity, Unity and Strength
32
32
Do you have a passion for the arts but also a drive for athletic performance? Artistic Swimming, originally known as Ornamental Swimming and Synchronized Swimming, began in the 1920's in Canada, where it later joined the Olympic Games program in 1984 through solo and duet performances. Across Alberta, swimmers can join recreational programs, competitive programs or join swimmer camps to cultivate excellence, collaboration, integrity and innovation. (Canada Artistic Swimming, 2019) Artistic swimming offers a chance for athletes to develop strength in swimming skills while fostering creative expression in a positive supportive environment. Here’s what makes the sport so unique:
Creative and Emotional Expression: Experience a combination of both arts and athletics in one while growing in a positive environment. Advanced Aquatic Strength: Swimmers build incredible strength in the water to display impressive movements. Precision, Control and Endurance: Group training must be created in meticulous preparation to perform precise synchronization. Unity, Timing and Trust in the Water: Athletes learn and adapt to underwater movement of lifts, acrobatics and transitions. Community and Group Orientated: While learning in a supportive environment, artistic swimmers thrive on friendship to create powerful group performances.

The Art of Athletic Performance
Artistic swimming offers a combination of rigorous athletic skills and the joy of curated expression though performance to allow athletes access to a sport of fun and inclusion. Learn with the recreational program or train competitively to reach the International level or Masters Worlds!
Why Try Artistic Swimming? Through team community, artistic swimming offers full-body strength training by performing through artistry and control. If you are interested in beginning your journey, there are recreational programs beginning this month here in Lethbridge.
Artistic Swimming in Lethbridge Clubs - The Lethbridge Synchrobelles , part of the Canada Artistic Swimming, provides programs for a wide range of ages. Athletes can begin as young as age 5 in the AquaGo!, learn-toswim program, followed by competitive levels (8-20 years old) to adult Masters (18+). Events - Rocky Mountain Qualifier - February 20th - 22nd. Alberta Artistic Swimming Championships, athletes 8+ all the way to Senior events, at the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre.
Dive into the pool with a growth mindset and you can become immersed in expression, synchronization and teamwork through the power of performance. WANT TO PLAY?
