A summary of an article on the Lethbridge Plays blog, submitted by Lethbridge Sport Council, cross-posted on lethbridgesportcouncil.ca
Fundamental movement skills—such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, kicking, striking, and balancing—are the foundation of physical literacy and must be developed through practice, play, and a variety of experiences. These skills build physical competence, confidence, and the ability to participate in sport, recreation, and everyday movement. Several key skills in particular—like jumping, catching, kicking, striking, throwing, running, and balance—are important building blocks that support participation across a wide range of sports and activities.
Play-based programs help children develop these skills by creating fun, inclusive, and ageappropriate environments where they can explore movement and try new things without pressure. Rather than focusing on specific sports, the emphasis is on learning through play, which supports confidence and helps children feel successful regardless of their experience level.
Parents play an important role in supporting skill development at home. Simple, low-equipment activities—like obstacle courses, tossing games, or imaginative play—can help children practice movement skills while keeping the focus on fun, effort, and progress. Modelling active behaviour as a parent also reinforces the value of movement in everyday life.
Developing fundamental movement skills early helps children build the confidence to participate in physical education, try new sports, and stay active with peers. This confidence often carries into adulthood, increasing the likelihood of lifelong participation in physical activity and supporting overall health and wellness.

Are you ready for a sport where no two tracks are the same, you’re moving on two wheels and you will be sure to get a rush of adrenaline? BMX (bicycle motocross), born around the 1970's, was originally know as ‘pedal-cross’. Beginning as an unstructured bike racing game, BMX soon became recognized nationally, where rules were set and technology was integrated With tournaments all across North America, what better time to join this competitive chance at adventure! (BMX Canada)
In this sport, athletes can show off creative freestyle skills and race opponents on tracks. Here’s what makes BMX an intriguing sport to compete in, to watch or to try:
Speed and Sprints: Speed is needed in BMX racing as one lap around the track usually only consists of 30-40 seconds of biking
Tactical and Technological: Athletes are working on quick decisions and maneuvering as that light turns green, the shoot opens, and they begin!
Suiting Up to Ride: Riders must wear a properly fitting helmet, shoes, gloves and padding across the body to be ready for any external impact.
Thrilling Adrenaline: Tracks are a complication of jumps, turns, and speed that push your body into a rush of adventure
Focus and Resilience: BMX is a discipline sport, where athletes must retain maximum focus during training and events to optimize speed, power and precision

BMX tracks invite everyone to come out and brave the course. If you are just beginning, you are still welcome to learn and grow on the hills and turns. At the same time, if you are returning competitor, you can work on showing off some exciting air-time in jumps and tricks!
It’s thrilling, unique and enjoyable! BMX allows you to be outside while participating in riding at any speed and level that you feel comfortable with Whether trying for the first time, or competing at high levels, BMX is a sport for everyone!
Clubs - Lethbridge BMX is a club for all riders; any age and ability Their season typically begins the first weekend of May and ends the final weekend of September
Events - Lethbridge BMX will host Provincial 3 & 4 on July 18 -19 th th
From the first pedal to the final push, BMX is about discovering what you’re capable of physically and mentally. A step onto the wild side of adventure!
