GRADUATE WORK

THE “MODULE” HOTEL (Studio Project - 2021) This project was about wanting to challenge the stack typology of a hotel and the associations that it has with it. Hotels typically include a standard stack rising up, with little to no variation throughout. The goal was to find a way to introduce differences in it through the use of a module system, as well as by layering separate systems of massing overtop one another. The modules allow for a new kind of spatial experience to open up between floors in the stack, while also creating a continuity and connection that is otherwise forgotten in hotels. The maneuver of “shifting” aids in breaking up the interior spaces by creating forms that move apart from each other, leading to openings and intersections. Through the utilization of these conditions, an interior environment comparable to a city street is formed.

WEXNER ART GALLERY (Studio Project - 2021) For this project, I was tasked with creating a new art gallery for the Wexner Collection in Columbus, Ohio. Using inspiration from Renzo Piano’s art galleries, I devised a roof panel system that could filter light into an open atrium space, while also protecting the artwork within. The building also had to provide space for visiting artists, which I incorporated through the utilization of a long bar along the right-hand side. The art gallery atrium pulls out from the artist space like a drawer sliding out of its housing. The roof paneling tacks on to this and utility spaces wrap around the ramped atrium.

JESSE OWENS NORTH RECREATION CENTER (Studio Project - 2021) Jesse Owens is an athletic icon as The Ohio State University and this studio project was meant to be an homage to him. We were given the site of the current Jesse Owens Recreation Center, which is nowhere near fitting enough to represent a figure of his stature. To represent him efficiently, I devised a form based around speed with a “swooshing”, “swooping” look. From there, the project became about how I could include the student population within the project. To do this, I made use of a green courtyard spaces engulfed within the inner part of the “swoosh”. In addition to this, student-friendly activity spaces such as a rock-climbing wall along the east-side of the site, lap pool to the southwest and plenty of squash and basketball courts were added all throughout the design.

UNDERGRADUATE WORK

BASIC HOUSE (REVIT - 2016) This project was an introduction to the basics of Revit. It is a very simple 2-story home that was designed to teach the basic functions of Revit and to give a small background in rendering with light.

TINY HOUSE (SketchUp - 2016) This project was done in an undergraduate introductory course about different architecture programs. The idea was to take a box about the size of a shed and build off of it to create a house capable of providing amenities for a single person to dwell in. In the end it became more of a freeform/organic design with no real springboard for design inspiration other than reacting to what was going on with the amenities needed within the house.

UNDERGRADUATE SELECTED WORK

CUBE PROJECT (Basswood Model/Drawings - 2019) The goal of this project was to play around with a 9 square grid expanded into three dimensions. A cube was taken as the base and planes were to be filled inside of the cube to create potential spatial arrangements. It ended up being more of a springboard for potential architecture projects than anything. After creating the cube by using basswood sticks and matte board for the interior planes, I also did axonometric drawings to further explore the implications of the spaces created within.

RED-BLUE CHAIR (Basswood Model/Collage - 2019) In this project I was tasked with recreating the famous Red-Blue Chair by Gerrit Rietveld. The model itself is done with basswood. I then represented the chair through a series of elevation drawings and in a collage. The collage was based on the idea that the chair had a huge social/cultural impact during its day, which I represented through it popping out from a series of newspaper clippings.
