EDITORIAL NOTE by Joana Braga dos Reis and Bambi Pomagalski
Here we are now, more than a year after the start of this pandemic situation we continue to face today. Here we are now, confronted with the changes and challenges in education. We find ourselves sharing a unique opportunity for teaching and learning in a completely changed world.
At Astoria International School we believe, with all our heart, that this is an exciting opportunity to start anew. As a school, we are not a mere institution but a place where so many belong. With our own lives, experiences, and purposes, we connect here in Astoria and through this belonging and connection we have remained strong and driven to achieve what is best. There is no doubt that we have plenty of reasons to remain optimistic about the future.
Arts & Culture - Culture Week Memórias no coraçã ! by Joana Casalinho
Olá a todos! Ao longo do último mês vivemos diversas aventuras que nos ficarão na memória! Na semana da Cultura viajámos por vários países! E na sala ainda apanhámos um voo especial até Paris! Comemos queijo e a famosa baguete, achámos por bem deixar os escargot para os especialistas. Tirámos fotos memoráveis como a “Mona Lisa” e ainda junto à Torre Eiffel. Que memorável!!!
Festejámos o Dia Mundial da Criança, onde todos os Butterflies deixaram um desenho nas t-shirts dos amigos. Por último, fomos à descoberta de Luís de Camões, o que fez ao longo da sua vida e por onde andou. Isto porque há que comemorar o 10 de Junho, Dia de Portugal. E claro, Butterflies sendo Butterflies, tirámos fotos à Camões! O ano letivo está quase a terminar, mas a aventuras continuarão!

Arts & Culture - Viagem pelo Mundo da Arte by Maria Inês Pires
Ao longo do ano, os Preschoolers B embarcaram numa viagem pelo mundo das artes. Adoraram descobrir e explorar a vida e obra de diversos artistas. Moldaram e reproduziram os quadros mais emblemáticos, recorrendo a diferentes técnicas, à imaginação e criatividade, obtendo resultados surpreendentes. São verdadeiros artistas em ponto pequeno! Destacam-se os seguintes pintores como os seus preferidos: Joan Miró, Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gustav Klimt, Yayoi Kusama e Andy Warhol.
Story Corner - Complaints by Luiza Miranda - Galileo
Since the day we are born, we complain about even the smallest things we don’t like. Sometimes because of a broken arm, others because of a job that we lost. But we never stop for a second to think that while we are complaining, someone else has a much bigger problem. We roll our eyes, we yell, we cry, and at one point we just stop to be happy because of our problems. Why should we cause problems if we can fix them? Why should we cry if we can smile? Why should we break if we can build? Can’t we just work out the issue instead of thinking and suffering about it? So many people starve and die every day because of injustice and hate for one another and instead of helping this people and trying to find different ways of making
their lives better, we simply ignore it and say that the world isn’t fair and justify our actions thinking “no one is perfect”. We don’t have to be. We just have to try, because there are people whose only reason that they are alive, is because they have faith that one day, someone will save them. We shouldn’t waste our time overthinking about things that are actually simple to solve. We should use it to make the world a better place not only for us, but for them, because right now people are dying and we should be searching for solutions, because maybe we can change someone’s future. So next time we are complaining about insignificant things, let’s ask ourselves: is it worth it?
