Luxury residential architect Richard Landry, founding principal of Los Angeles-based Landry Design Group (LDG), must often accommodate clients’ museum-quality art collections into the firm’s designs. “We ask a lot of questions on how the client wants to live in their home, and one of those questions is whether they have an art collection they want displayed,” reports LDG partner Suzanne Evans Shepela. Explaining the goal is to have all art harmoniously incorporated into the project, Shepela states, “Based on the size and type of art, it can either be the star or set into the background.”
Emphasizing a collaborative approach, Shepela discloses, “Our goal at LDG is to seamlessly work with the interior designer so one doesn’t know where the architect’s and interior designer’s work stops and starts.” Maintaining that art considerations extend beyond interiors, she adds, “If the client has a sculpture collection they want to display in the garden, we’ll make sure to accommodate that request and provide options for their review.”
Landry and his team integrated the extensive art collection of a client whose Beverly Hills home is a unique hybrid of classical French château and modern aesthetics. The home is referred to as Papillion (“butterfly” in French) for its themed art installations,

including a nine-foot-high butterfly sculpture by Rubem Robierb and a chandelier consisting of 350 hand-blown glass butterflies suspended from the glass rotunda, created by interior designer Philip Nimmo and Windfall Contemporary Crystal Lighting.
At another Landry project in Los Angeles, a modern guest house on the site of a large classically inspired estate, a colorful modern sculpture by Brad Howe reaches skyward through a cutout in the cantilevered roof, a powerful commitment to art in the home. “When designing the sculpture for the guest house we had multiple meetings with the clients and artist to discuss scale, color, movement, transparency, and the importance of the piece given its highly visible location,” says Shepela. For a contemporary oceanfront home in Malibu — its very form was inspired by the sweeping sculptures of Richard Serra — LDG created a beachy retreat that doubled as a museum featuring masterpieces by Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, and Alexander Calder.
Through art, the true essence of a space can be fully realized.
The Wiseman Group, founded in San Francisco more than 40 years ago by Paul Vincent Wiseman, regularly accommodates existing collections or newly curated art into the firm’s diverse designs, which are admired for being appropriate to their underlying architecture and local environments. Suggesting that art is an incredibly important vehicle for reinforcing aesthetics, design director James Hunter says, “When the art goes up on the walls is when the home really comes together.” He adds, “It not only personalizes the residence but provides scale and perspective to spaces.”

1 // Find a Jumping-Off Point
9 Ways to Layer
Warm Neutral Colors for Comfortably
Refined Rooms
Design pros share advice for building an inviting palette, introducing high contrast and mixing textures.
Beige is back big time, and it’s anything but boring. That’s because designers are using it as part of layered neutral color schemes that provide comforting warmth. “Neutrals shouldn’t equate to boring. Rather, they should produce a luxurious, refined space that feels warm and textured,” interior designer Samantha Stathis says.
When layering warm tones and textures, an early selection can serve as a jumping-off point. This can come from just about anywhere, such as a wall color, the veining pattern in a natural stone or a favorite object. “Layering warm neutrals in interior design is an art that marries comfort with sophistication,” designer Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs says. “Often a starting point emerges organically, such as a captivating piece of art, and sets the tone for the room’s palette.”
2 // Find the Right Background Color
When layering warm tones, the color of the walls is key. To create a cozy backdrop that allows layered neutrals to shine, Curtis recommends choosing a warm taupe or creamy beige. “Right now, I’m loving Neutral Ground by Sherwin-Williams,” she says. Or, for a warm yet airy backdrop, she also recommends Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee.
3 // Use a Variety of Textiles
“Whenever you’re working with a neutral color palette, it’s important to incorporate different tones, textures and patterns to create a more layered look that doesn’t fall flat,” Stathis says. In one of her recent projects, she used a mix of florals, stripes and small-scale prints in varying materials like linen, cotton and wool. “This ultimately led to a more cozy and homey room,” she says.
4 // Be Inspired by Natural Materials
Designers also note that while textiles are important, other textures play a big role in layering as well. “Using natural materials such as wood, marble or clay in your accessories adds further dimension to the design without having to compromise on the neutral scheme, Stathis says. “I find inspiration in natural textures and earthy elements,” says Curtis. “When infusing warmth into a room with neutrals, consider incorporating different textures like soft throws, wooden accents and plush rugs.”

5 // Think Earthy and Organic
“I think earthiness is a factor in the trend we’re currently seeing with warm tones, whether it’s through color alone, through natural materials, or through something made by hand,” says interior designer Emily Pueringer. “All these layers are factors of the warmth brought into a project for me. When designing a project lately, I am always thinking about how I can bring an earthy vibe to it.” With regard to specific colors, “Earthy terra-cotta or clay tones will remain timeless and also have a global vibe. Seeing the clay properties peek out at you, the variation in the handpainted glaze and the imperfections bring a human warmth.”
6 // Use an Assortment of Textures
“Playing with different colors and finishes within a space is the key to layering,” notes Justin Tollefson, an architect with Pearson Design Group. In their lake house project, for example: pine ceilings were covered with opaque white paint, pine walls were coated with semi-translucent white paint (keeping the wood's knots and grain visible), reclaimed barnwood was utilized for the kitchen walls, and rooms were grounded with dark-stained oak floors to provide a dark contrast to the warm neutrals.
7 // Take Cues From the Views
Love the view from your window? Consider neutrals that harmonize with your outdoor surroundings. For instance, when Zen Associates worked on a home with big windows overlooking Japanese Zen gardens, they let the view inspire their interior color and texture palettes, choosing flooring that closely resembled the materials outside and using cream and tan tones indoors to complement the serene outdoor scene.

8 // Balance High Contrast
Curtis appreciates the drama that high contrast brings when layering warm neutral tones. “To achieve high contrast in a pleasing manner, balance is key — juxtapose light and dark shades to create depth without overwhelming the senses,” she advises. For example, to add contrast to an otherwise light-and-bright room: add black and graphite tones on thinner elements like furniture frames, drapery rods and window grilles, with just a few larger dollops of deep tones mixed in.
9 // Embrace Patina
In one of her projects, designer Jessica Moran created a refined, eclectic look by mixing styles and contrasting crisp white with patinaed pieces, successfully layering by finding the right balance between old and new and dark and light. “I love layering vintage art and furniture to keep spaces from feeling too precious,” Moran says. “And I especially love layering worn vintage pieces against the crisp and clean backdrop of white walls. It’s vintage yet somehow modern and fresh.”
