With gothic cathedrals to Michelin-starred delights, Palma de Mallorca is where history meets modernity in Spain.
ISLANDS OFTEN EVOKE visions and memories of sea, sand, and balmy breezes. But when considering the Mediterranean, art, food, enchanting villages, rocky mountainous backdrops, and iconic architecture are musthave additions.
Among the four islands in the Balearic Archipelago — Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera — Ibiza gets rave reviews from sun worshipers. Yet on Mallorca, the largest of the Balearics, magnificent beaches, turquoise waters, quiet coves, and craggy cliffs are only part of the appeal. Equally prized are the vibrant art scene, eclectic architecture, historic neighborhoods, and a delectable mingling of cuisines along with easy access from major cities and the Spanish mainland. It’s no coincidence that Palma, the largest city in Mallorca and regional capital, is often compared to Barcelona. The
British press celebrates Palma as “one of the best city break destinations in the world.”
With a history that extends back to the 3rd millennium BC, Mallorca is a tapestry layered by successive cultural influences and conquerors. Today, this heritage makes Palma a fascinating destination. Also, unlike typical island haunts, the city is not limited to a single season, but instead, it boasts a year-round calendar of events.
Vestiges of the medieval era are evidenced in neighborhoods like Old Town and the Arab and Jewish Quarters, where narrow streets inhibit traffic, and ancient passageways invite exploration. Historical monuments, galleries, shops and cafes present a matchless opportunity to experience a region’s multifaceted culture and history. Like other
important medieval cities, Palma once housed a Jewish Quarter, a separate walled city with its own entrances. In the Arab Quarter, the labyrinth of narrow streets is a haven of hidden treasures.
Gothic Masterpiece
The most iconic structure in the city is La Seu, a towering cathedral whose spires have become a hallmark over the centuries. One of Europe’s best examples of Gothic architecture, La Seu is built on the site of a former mosque, which was once a Roman temple. Adjacent to the cathedral lies a 13th-century palace and spended gardens, L’Almudaina. From a hilltop location just west of Palma, Bellver Castle – a unique 14th-century round castle – one can enjoy some of the best views in the city. In the summer, Mallorca comes alive with music, including concerts,
festivals, and the International Chopin Festival.
Palaces are not a rarity here. Many, such as Palacio Can Marqués in Old Town, have been refashioned as hotels. This former palace is touted as one of the capital’s most captivating and romantic historic properties. Renowned interior designer, Aline Matsika has deftly kept original features intact, balancing antique furniture with modern technology to achieve comfort and glamor. Found in the La Lonja neighborhood, it’s surrounded by the most alluring art galleries and enthralling museums in Mallorca.
Another city gem, Palama Riad, takes cues from a traditional Moroccan design and is organized around an interior garden. Elegant with a definite air of mystery, this hotel is limited to adults, offering only 11 indulgent suites. The region continues to be a Mecca for artists. Joan Miro, a Spanish painter and sculptor, spent the last part of his life in the area. For devotees following his path, Palma is the last stop. Miro’s studio is now part of the Fundació Pilar I Joan Miró, a must-visit. There is even a hotel, Joan Miro, that displays his work in guest rooms.

From simple seaport faire, often partaken at the water’s
edge, to Michelin-starred restaurants from celebrated chefs, Palma’s food scene delivers for foodies and culinary enthusiasts alike. Santa Catalina, a gastronomic haven, features an international mix. Proust’s Madeleine for pastries and coffee is not to be missed. Want a close-up of Mediterranean bounty? Head to the Santa Catalina Market, where you can purchase traditional favorites, such as sobrasada, wine and olives. A number of small gastrotèques allow one to savor the flavors and experiences.

Santi Taura, helmed by Michelin-star Santi Taura, deftly balances new and old, interpreting traditional Mallorca cuisine from a contemporary point of view.
The sea views rival the decadent cuisine at Es Fum restaurant, run by Miguel Navarro at the St. Regis Mardavall. Minutes from Puerto Portals, one of Mallorca’s upscale marinas, the St. Regis offers a 4,700-square-meter Thalasso spa and wellness center.
No matter where you are on the island, there is no limit to beautiful places to dine, often on a lovely terrace, patio or rooftop. The best paella? Choices abound in a city born of the sea, but it’s worth taking the time to explore the traditional fishing ports of Portixol and Molinar, which are a short walk or taxi ride from the cathedral.
Throughout the city, the aquamarine waters seem to color every scene. Visitors can dive into the crystalline waters
even in the city. Palma Beach has fine white sand and is adjacent to the boardwalk. Throughout Mallorca, there are dozens of beach resorts and traditional fishing villages. One of the best ways to understand the scope of the destination is by boat. Excursions range from short tours to leasing a yacht or chartering a private vessel.
Ultimate Mediterranean Retreat
Another opportunity to relax and rejuvenate in the Mediterranean is the ultra-private Hotel Cap Rocat, a former 19th-century military fortress located on a private nature preserve. Expansive views of Palma Bay, the sandstone walls, and ancient sea stones on which the fortress was built surround the senses with the essence of the Mediterranean.
The hotel is limited to just 26 suites and two double rooms. Private terraces often include an exterior canopied bed, plunge pools, or gardens to luxuriate in and relax.
