If you are looking for recreation programs for you and your family, fun community events, or classes for learning a new skill, look no further than your local park and rec district! San Juan Island Park & Recreation District – known locally as “Island Rec,” has been serving San Juan Island residents since 1984. Island Rec provides robust recreation programming and maintains several parks, including the community athletic fields and walking trail at John O. Linde Community Park. Approximately 80% of funding for Island Rec comes from a voter-supported property tax levy, with the remainder of costs covered by participant fees, grants, and donations. In a unique and necessary partnership, Island Rec also covers costs for the high school athletics program to ensure local youth have the opportunity to participate in sports.
In addition to year-round recreation programming for all ages, Island Rec offers a daily after-school program for K-5th grade, the free Music on the Lawn summer concert series, and a myriad of events that have become woven into the fabric of the San Juan Island community. In the summer you will find Island Rec staff running programs all over the island, from sailing lessons to youth day camps. The summer adult soccer league and the Friday Harbor 8.8k Run are also local favorites. In June, Island Rec hosts the Hill of Thrills Soap Box Race, where competitors build their own non-motorized gravity propelled car and compete in head to head heats down Grover Street. During the colder months, residents enjoy nightly indoor pickleball, basketball, roller hockey, and more leagues for children and adults. Island Rec offers financial assistance to San Juan Island residents to participate in Island Rec programs.
Island Rec's dedicated parks team operates and maintains several parks on San Juan Island that are free and open to the public daily. Keep reading to learn about local parks on San Juan Island. Visit www.islandrec.org to view and sign up for programs and for detailed information on all parks.

L AND B ANK
Conserving the Rural Character of the San Juans
SAN JUAN COUNTY, 1990: Land development and tourism were on the rise, and the County’s population was rapidly growing. Facing the loss of places they loved, a diverse group of locals, (including Sam R Buck Sr., who along with his wife Barbara, started our company in 1960, then known as San Juan Properties, Inc. and now known as Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands, Inc.), sought for a way to save their treasured open spaces and maintain their quality of life. Their collective vision led to the creation of the San Juan County Citizens Conservation Land Bank.
The Conservation Land Bank is charged with preserving exceptional places in the islands, guided by local input. A onetime 1% real estate excise tax, paid by purchasers of property at closing, funds the program. In this way the community, through the Conservation Land Bank, has the ability to purchase and thereby protect the places that make the islands such a special place to visit, raise a family, and retire.
This investment in community space has paid off in spades. Since its inception over thirty years ago, the Conservation Land Bank has protected close to 7,500 acres. The portfolio includes some of the archipelago’s most celebrated places: Westside Preserve on San Juan, Turtleback Mountain Preserve on Orcas, and the Fisherman Bay Preserves on Lopez.
When possible, areas with significant wildlife habitat and community value are purchased and turned into preserves. The Land Bank stewards forests and grasslands, tidelands, 13 different beaches and have designated 50 miles of trails. The Land Bank also manages over 60 conservation easements on private lands. These easements safeguard sweeping views of the sea, family farmlands and waterfowl-rich wetlands.
This is a community that prioritizes open space and strives to provide and protect farms, forests, shores, and scenic vistas now and for the generations to come.

the SAN JUAN PRESERVATION TRUST
The San Juan Preservation Trust is a private, nonprofit, nationally accredited land trust devoted to helping individuals and communities conserve land in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. It was established in 1979 by a group of island citizens. The Preservation Trust is governed by a 15- to 21-member Board of Trustees, legally obligated to administer the land for preservation. Board members represent each of the four major San Juan Islands (San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island), and other outer islands in the archipelago.
The organization’s staff members are united by a passion and desire to protect the natural legacy of the San Juan Islands for future generations. The Preservation Trust offers a volunteer program that encourages active participation in efforts to conserve treasured island sites and landscapes. The organization aims to provide volunteers with an enjoyable, educational, and worthwhile experience.
The Preservation Trust works with landowner partners and members/supporters to forever protect and care for more than 300 properties, including 50 miles of shoreline, 25 miles of trails, and 19,000 acres on 21 islands. Most of this land belongs to private landowners and is not open to the public. The map highlights nature preserves open for public visitation, with some limitations.
The San Juan Preservation Trust is a nonprofit organization classified as 501(c)(3). It does not receive tax revenue and relies
solely on charitable donations to protect the San Juan Islands. As an accredited land trust, the organization is committed to financial transparency and the highest standards of ethical governance. The San Juan Preservation Trust tax ID/EIN is 91-1078355.
The mission of this Preservation Trust is to conserve, care for, and connect people with the land of the San Juan Islands. To conserve the natural beauty, essential ecosystems, and unique character of the San Juan Islands for future generations, the Trust creates legal agreements, called conservation easements, that permanently limit uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values.
To care for the lands and waters under its protection and with its partners (which include the San Juan County Land Bank), the Preservation Trust’s stewardship staff manage the retained nature preserves, monitor the conservation easements held, and renovate damaged or neglected lands that are protected by the trust. To connect people to nature, to each other, and to the Preservation Trust, they encourage collaboration, education, and outreach to further their core values. Preservation Trust Executive Director Angela Anderson says, “Successful conservation depends on active engagement with people whose lives and livelihoods interconnect with the natural areas that SJPT preserves and protects, for today and for future generations.”

American Camp
American Camp is located at the southern tip of San Juan Island. In the summer of 1859, the “Pig War” began after an American settler shot a British pig on the island, which both nations claimed. The “Pig War” refers to a 12-year-long peaceful standoff between American and British soldiers and settlers. During the mid-1800s, the American Army and the British Royal Navy lived on San Juan Island. American soldiers occupied Camp San Juan Island, now known as American Camp, from July 1859 until November 1874.
A new facility at American Camp now welcomes visitors with state-of-the-art exhibits, books, and guides showcasing the island's history and wildlife. There are several historical points of interest, including a fortress and lookout called the Redoubt, a small artifact museum, and historic buildings.
As you explore American Camp, you will discover miles of trails that take you through grassy prairies dotted with rocky outcrops. You can walk down to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands, where you can enjoy fantastic views over the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains. Other trails lead you up Mount Finlayson, which stands 285 feet tall and offers views of Cattle Point Lighthouse. You can follow the trail from Mount Finlayson to Jakle's Lagoon and Fourth of July Beach. American Camp is also home to more than 200 species of migratory birds, including a nesting pair of bald eagles and an abundance of red foxes, orcas, and other marine mammals that frequently visit the waters off South Beach.
English Camp
English Camp is a National Park featuring the remains of a mid-19th-century settlement, historic outbuildings, exhibitions, and a boat dock. No permits are required for parking, and facilities include a bike rack, restrooms, and parking space for approximately 25 cars. Dogs are welcome if kept on a leash.
On June 15, 1859, the "Pig War" was initiated, leading to a peaceful 12-year joint occupation of San Juan Island by British and American forces while the two nations disputed ownership of the island. At the island's northern end, the Royal Marines were stationed at the English Camp. Today, visitors can explore a few remaining buildings, a formal garden, and a cemetery at the English Campgrounds.
This beautiful day-use park located on the shores of Garrison Bay includes a small, seasonal visitor center that provides information about the history and wildlife of English Camp. The park features trails ranging from a fairly strenuous hike up Young Hill to the cemetery and beyond and an easy 45-minute loop through woodland and along the bay. From June through August, park rangers and volunteers recreate various military and civilian life skills from the island's early pioneer period on Saturdays. Additionally, for one weekend in July, the park hosts a reenactment of life in the mid-19th-century camp.

Island History
The history of San Juan Island is rich and extensive, contrary to what brief introductions to this unique island community suggest. For thousands of years, Native people from Coast Salish communities have lived in the San Juan Islands. Then, during the mid-19th century, Great Britain and the United States, both challenged by a limited understanding of this area's geography, each claimed all the San Juan Islands but did agree upon a compromise international boundary in "the strait." But there are two straits. This dispute led to the Pig War crisis when each nation sent troops to the island to defend its territory. An impartial tribunal decided in favor of the United States in 1872, which is why San Juan Island is now an American island. Today's San Juan Island National Historical Park interprets and commemorates this era.
Island farms, fishing operations, and retail commerce developed faster once San Juan County was established in 1873. Families were often cross-cultural, established by the marriages of Coast Salish women to men of EuropeanAmerican descent.
In the 1890s, leisure boat excursions to bucolic, fresh-air places became popular, and Friday Harbor experienced a flourishing era of town development with new hotels, shops, and restaurants. Fishing and logging were becoming thriving industries, so commercial exports out of Friday Harbor made for an active seaport.
In the early 1950s, with soldiers home from World War II and families reunited, national advertising campaigns promoted "See America." They encouraged domestic leisure travel, including the San Juans as a family vacation destination. The popularity of recreational boating and the building of summer vacation cabins followed in the 1960s.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Friday Harbor one of its "Dozen Distinctive Destinations," noting that it is the only historic seaport town on the West Coast that has never been destroyed by fire.
Today, the San Juan Historical Museum is on the momentous landmark of James F. King Farmstead, only a few blocks from the Friday Harbor Ferry Landing. Friday Harbor's last remaining homestead farm was originally built in 1894 by James F. King. In 1966, the farmhouse was donated by the new owner and resident George Peacock to the Historical Society for museum use. The Museum represents a distinct island culture of resilience and independence, sharing stories from the island's four major historical industries f arming, fishing, logging, and lime quarrying and processing. In addition, the Museum collection contains nine heritage structures, thousands of photographs, and artifacts that represent our collective heritage.
Independence Day
Independence Day on San Juan Island is a spirited celebration, bringing the community together to honor America's birthday. The town of Friday Harbor is beautifully decorated with red, white, and blue bunting and flags. Throughout the day, the island community hosts various events, starting with a pancake breakfast organized by the local fire department at Brickworks.
The celebration's highlight is the popular town parade, which begins around 10:30 AM and winds through the streets of Friday Harbor. The parade features delightful floats, classic cars, and marchers dressed in patriotic attire. Arriving early to secure a front-row seat along the parade route guarantees a great view of the festivities.
Following the parade, attendees can look forward to a "Pig-War Picnic," featuring live music, dancing, a pieeating contest, a cakewalk, children's games, and a delicious barbecue for everyone to enjoy with friends and family. Since relocating to the County Fairgrounds on Argyle Avenue, the event has exceeded all expectations regarding size and attendance. To enhance the experience for 2025, the hosts—the Friday Harbor Kiwanis Club—are excited to announce expanded hours, a wider variety of food offerings, additional activities, and a collaboration with the Port for an entire afternoon of family fun. Don't miss "Rock the Dock" from 5 PM to 10 PM at the Port of Friday Harbor, featuring music and dancing in the marina parking lot, followed by a fireworks show.
On the north side of San Juan Island, Roche Harbor has planned its exciting Fourth of July activities, a diverse range of fun for everyone. Roche Harbor Resort will host a Family 3.3K Fun Run, a log-rolling contest, an egg toss, a doughnuteating contest, children's games, live music, and a special colors ceremony toward the end of the event. These activities typically start around 12:30 PM. Consider making a quick trip from Friday Harbor to join in the fun.
As the sun sets, a breathtaking fireworks display will light up the night sky, visible from various locations around the island. Roche Harbor and the Town of Friday Harbor will each host spectacular fireworks shows. This celebration of American independence honors the fundamental values of self-governance, equality, and the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The day is filled with a strong sense of community and togetherness as everyone gathers to celebrate the freedoms that make America great. Independence Day on San Juan Island is a festive and memorable occasion that highlights what makes this country truly special.

A Summer Celebration of Love
and Nathan Rude's San Juan Island Wedding
On a picture-perfect August weekend, Ida and Nathan Rude celebrated their love story on breathtaking San Juan Island, where their journey had unfolded over the past six years. With clear skies, golden sunshine, and the island’s natural beauty in full bloom, they filled the weekend with love, meaning, and joyful connection.
They married on August 2, 2024, a date that held deep significance for them. It marked the day they first became a couple, the day Nathan proposed, and now, their wedding anniversary. Choosing this special day honored the milestones that shaped their relationship beautifully.
Their ceremony was a private and heartfelt gathering on the island’s scenic west side, a location close to their hearts and the site of their first on-island date. With only their immediate families present, including Nathan’s parents, siblings, and Ida’s mother, they exchanged vows surrounded by the beauty of the Salish Sea and the landscape where their love blossomed.
The celebration continued the next day, August 3, with a lively reception where friends and extended family gathered to toast the newlyweds. Set on a stunning private property, the afternoon and evening filled with sunshine, music, and dancing under the open sky. Laughter echoed, drinks flowed, and guests basked in the glow of the couple’s happiness.
Local island vendors played a massive role in making the day unforgettable, bringing a true sense of place and community to
Ida
the celebration. From vibrant floral arrangements grown with love by family friends to handcrafted signage and thoughtful details, the day became enriched by the care of those closest to the Rudes. The food catered by a beloved local restaurant on San Juan Island offered guests a delicious taste of the couple's go-to dishes. Every element, from food and flowers to music and design, reflected the couple's deep-rooted connections on the island.
Ida and Nathan felt deeply thankful for the incredible support they received throughout the planning process and during the days leading up to their wedding. From friends who lent their creativity and time to family who helped bring each detail to life, their celebration became even more meaningful because of the generosity and love that surrounded them.
These two days painted a vivid portrait of love, gratitude, and togetherness, marking the perfect start to Ida and Nathan's next chapter.
