The

building

Granary warehouse is one of a pair of listed wharfside warehouses that stand as monuments to Cardigan’s rich maritime history. The buildings were built as storehouses around 1745 by brothers Thomas and John Davies. They served the shipping industry in the region with a sail making loft in the bridge warehouse and a foundry at granary warehouse. During the early nineteen eighties the upper floors of the building were poorly converted to flats. Over the past 3 years the exterior of the building has been entirely restored to heritage standards and the interior rebuilt to create 6 beautiful holiday apartments, combining a contemporary sensibility with traditional craftsmanship and quality of materials.

Cardigan area In its 900 year history Cardigan has been the fortified seat of kings, the birthplace of the National Eisteddfod, and in the 19th century one of Wales’s major ports. Cardigan and the surrounding area is blessed in its location and its geography. It has the great Teifi at its heart. It has beautiful beaches, great walks, unspoilt ancient forests and breathtaking scenery. Cardigan is the crossroads of the Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire Coastal Paths and Ceredigion Strategic Cycle Network linking with the Celtic Way through North Pembrokeshire. Within 20 miles of Cardigan there exists some of the best Walking, Fishing, Mountain Biking, Kite-boarding, Trail Running, Hill Climbing Canoeing, and other Watersports that Britain has to offer. Cardigan events From your prime position on the quayside, immerse yourself in another side of Cardigan steeped in history and tradition. Throughout the year events take place celebrating land, river and sea and the passion for all that makes up this wonderful part of Wales becomes evident. Here are some of our favourites: Barley Saturday featuring a parade of the area’s finest horses, including the running of the stallions along Cardigan High Street, is an annual event at the end of April, demonstrating a huge pride amongst local farmers. Pembrokeshire Fish Week in June celebrates the county’s magnificent coastline. Go crab catching, learn to fly-fish, compete in a sandcastle challenge or just tuck into some fresh local seafood. August sees a number of local events: Cilgerran Coracle races feature local coracle fishermen demonstrating their skills catching salmon and sea-trout in the shadow of Cilgerran castle. Velo Teifi organises Wales’ best Criterium cycling event around the streets of Cardigan, now recognised as a Welsh Championship event. Cardigan Quays festival brings together artists, craftspeople, musicians and food producers on the quayside for a day of demonstration of our rich maritime heritage and a chance to take part in activities on the river. Cardigan Walking Festival in September has a programme of walks to suit all abilities taking in urban, rural and coastal paths as well as talks and events.

Food & drink Just next door to the lofts at the fforest café we’ll serve you the best coffee in town and a healthy fforest breakfast of home baked granola or thick toast with home made jam or local honey. Throughout the day we serve homemade cakes and flapjacks and at lunchtime we have a selection of fforest platters in the summer and scrummy fforest soup in the colder months. Just a hop across the river at Cambrian Quay, the famous fforest pizza tipi is open during July and August. Wood fired pizza in our giant tipi and a drink from the cosy Tafarn Smwglin, with live music on Friday and Saturday nights. All this in a beautiful family friendly riverside courtyard. If you want to explore the local area here are our recommendations: Pubs: Eagle Inn - on our doorstep, with a Welsh welcome from Pete and Anne and home cooked food; Grosvenor- just over the river, big pub, nice terrace. Bell Inn - fforest chief’s after work pint.…and to watch rugby, squeeze into the Saddlers arms on the high street with the boys. Restaurants: 25 mile for innovative dishes from local produce on the High Street, Shampan curry boat on the river, Ferry Inn in St Dogmaels with good food and great river views, or to splash out, drive 30 mins to Llys Meddyg in Newport for a cellar bar lunch or fine dining in the evening. Y Llong (Ship), at Llangranog, 20 mins drive north, is a family run gastropub/restaurant. If it’s a fish and chip takeaway you’re after, only one place, Bowens in St Dogmaels.

The fforest family Staying at granary lofts makes you part of the fforest family. During the fforest season you are welcome to join us at fforest camp for events and dinners and to come and have a drink in the Bwthyn, our private pub. Outdoor pursuits We call it ‘active relaxation’; clearing your mind through the challenge of learning new skills and the physical demands of a tough day’s play. We also understand the luxury of just doing nothing. Sit on the beach, watch the sea, read a book, or just…dream. From Granary Warehouse you can walk, run or cycle along the River Teifi to the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve. Cardigan is also the meeting point for the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coastal footpaths. On the ground floor of the Granary Warehouse is Cardigan Bay Active booking centre, offering a full range of half and full day activity packages. At the booking centre you can pre-book (dependent on the season): guided canoe trips along the Teifi Gorge; introductory courses in river kayaking, sea kayaking, coasteering, abseiling, climbing and high ropes, surfing and rafting; bike hire; hill walking and advanced orienteering; quad-biking and paintballing. www.cardiganbayactive.co.uk tel: 01239 612133
