Dear Parents and Carers

It is lovely to see and enjoy the lighter nights since the clocks went forward last weekend and we can start to see the resemblance of spring.

Newsletter

This term has, again, gone quickly, as all terms in a busy school seem to do. Students have been working hard in all year groups and it is lovely to see their work as a product of their focus and effort. Just a reminder that school attendance is of the utmost importance, and I’m sure you will not be surprised when I tell you that students who have the highest attendance also have the greatest achievement.

Some weeks ago, we were visited by Ofsted and I would like to thank the whole community for the overwhelming positive messages of support which we received during the process. During the two days, it was lovely to see the pride from our young people as they spoke about their school with eloquence and passion. We are now waiting for the Report to be published and I will share it with you as soon as I am able to do so.

Finally, I am pleased to let you all know that we won the Curriculum Excellence Award at the recent Diversity Awards, and the trophy is now on display in a cabinet in school.

Bletchley Park - STEM Visit As part of the curriculum and to promote British Values, the Mathematics and Computer Science department took Year 9 and 10 students to Bletchley Park this term; home to the top-secret codebreakers during World War Two (WW2). It truly was a fantastic opportunity for students to visit the site where these extraordinary men and women changed the course of WW2 and the world.

Beginning with a guided tour of Bletchley Park, our students learned about the extensive site and watched a documentary about how these mathematicians worked tirelessly to break codes and reduce the war by over five years. The video was a file projection on a 22m screen, restored from footage of WW2 showing where hundreds of thousands of messages were intercepted at Bletchley Park and the implications this was having with the soldiers fighting in WW2.

The students were all involved in increasing their knowledge of the role that codes and ciphers played in WW2, with specific reference to the Enigma machine. They used and developed their team-working and mathematical skills, applying them to a series of code breaking activities and of course, trying the Enigma machine for themselves.

After lunch we had a full tour of the grounds starting with the original Victorian mansion, Commander Denniston’s Office and the Library recreated as they were in WW2.

We moved through to the different huts, that had been faithfully restored to bring to life the WW2 ambiance, which spoke of different functions the site provided; from living spaces, code breaking huts to the offices of personnel, such as Alan Turing.

This term Year 7 students have had ‘The Bookbuzz Experience’. Bookbuzz is part of the BookTrust – a charity which aims to encourage students to read by providing them with their own books to keep. Here’s what some of our students had to say.

A massive congratulations to Rida Khan in Year 10 who has been selected to take part in a work experience placement run by the educational charity, Teach First. There were 180 applications to take part across the country. Rida’s application was so impressive she is one of only 10 students selected for this opportunity. As part of her work experience placement, she will be networking with huge organisations such as Goldman Sachs, Amazon and Rolls Royce, taking part in employability training and skills building activities in business areas like media and marketing.

Random Acts of Kindness A random act of kindness is a selfless act which you can do to cheer up a family member, friend, or even someone you don’t know.

Celebrating such good deeds has become a popular yearly tradition in February, known as ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ which is celebrated globally, by individuals, schools, and other organisations.

At Colchester Academy we are trying to promote Random Acts of Kindness every day and have started a project where students can document an act of kindness on calling cards. The project is proving to be a huge success and is gathering momentum each week.

The event was designed to allow students to seek information from the various employers and colleges regarding their organisations, the jobs they seek to employ, the qualifications needed and the level of job satisfaction that might be on offer, should they choose to peruse that pathway.

Our finale consisted of all the school choirs performing on stage with the orchestra. It was a lovely way to finish a fantastic evening of music.
