Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day. We hope you enjoy this selection of excellent work.

Students have been completing a piece of work around health and social care services that impact individuals in a chosen scenario. Jasmine has produced work that not only explains the impact, but shows clear discussion on the impact of each service, which is a distinction standard piece of work. Areté Excellence of any kind Maths 3D Shapes by Gracie Holt-Ross and Tegan Coe, Year 8 Student Building shapes is a lovely way to help students understand and identify 3D shapes. They can learn and use vocabulary in more practical ways. All students were engaged, inspired, motivated and very keen to contribute to the lesson. They constantly asked relevant questions and debated the topic with enthusiasm. Gracie and Tegan showed great confidence and challenged themselves all the time. Mr Zawislak Maths Teacher

Areté Excellence of any kind History Narative Assessment by Abby Leech, Year 11 Student Recently, Year 11 students had been studying the American West. More specifically, analysing the ways in which the US government policies towards Plains Indians developed in the period 1835-1851. This is important in understanding how Indians were slowly being forced to integrate into society with White Americans, by removing them and relocating them onto reservations, showing potential conflicts between Plains Indians and Settlers which could arise in the future. Abby has shown a clear understanding about the topic and about how US Government policies change over time. Throughout the assessment, Abby has chain linked the events together in a constructive way. She has also explained the consequences of each policy and what it leads to, applying her learning and understanding of the events from beginning to end in a coherent manner. Mr Cook History Teacher
Areté Excellence of any kind Geography Climate Change by Kelsy Igierobo, Year 9 Student Kelsy has been working well with her Geography work this half term. In Year 9, pupils have been learning all about climate change. Kelsy has successfully designed a suitable home for consumers, which helps them adapt to climate change. Kelsy’s design illustrates a clear example of sustainable urban living. In addition, Kelsy has annotated her house design to explain how the adaptations will help consumers cope with climate change. Areté Excellence of any kind Computer Science Networking by Jessey Beech, Year 11 Student
This term, Year 11 Computer Science students have been studying the topic of “Networking”; a difficult topic that includes aspects such as protocols, topologies and compression. Jessey has made an fantastic start to this academic year and the quality of her work reflects this. Jessey has produced excellent answers to difficult concepts, including highlighting her key terms and definitions for revision purposes and completing her binary arithmetic retrieval practise questions with good results.
