Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté.

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students.

Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day.

We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas.

Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day.

We hope you enjoy this selection of excellent work.

Areté Excellence of any kind Music Music Creation by Codey Allan, Year 9 Student

Codey has been working well with his Music Technology work this half term. His class have been looking at remixes.

He has taken an acapella track, and provided his own beat and bassline. The original track is a Hiphop piece, but Codey has made a Dubstep version, incorporating MIDI sequencing and audio manipulation.

He has also inputted automation data throughout - an advanced technique which will give him more creative choices in future projects.

Areté Excellence of any kind English Poetry Assessment by Lily Ng, Year 9 Student

In this response, Lily demonstrates an excellent understanding of the writer’s intention.

It is clear that she has considered Shelley’s poem intentions throughout, both in terms of how the poem is written, but she has also started to examine Shelley’s wider ideas and how he has distanced himself, as the poet, from the message the poem conveys.

An even more impressive achievement, as much of this poem was taught via remote learning. Well done Lily.

Areté Excellence of any kind CoPE Weights & Measures by Micheal Knight, Cleo Toll, Samuel Morgan, Katie Duffy & Liam Mullen, Year 10 Students

In CoPE we have been learning about weights and measures. To make the lesson fun we decided to make mocktails.

Students had to design their own mocktail, researching which flavours work well together to improve the presentation of a mocktail. The students had to plan and create their own instructions on how to make a mocktail.

Once all planned, the students had a lesson making the mocktails which were really refreshing on such a hot day. Not only did they look good, they tasted good too. The students worked really hard on these and followed their instructions and measured the liquids correctly.

Areté Excellence of any kind Health & Social Care Care Values by Maddison Kelsey, Year 10 Student

Maddison has produced an outstanding piece of coursework for Health and Social Care which clearly demonstrates vast knowledge on the content required.

For this assignment, not only did students have to produce this level of written work, but they had to carry out two role plays, demonstrating the care values needed in the scenarios provided.

This piece of work was completed to a Distinction standard, meaning that Maddison has not only understood the content, but has assessed her own personal application of the care values, meeting the highest criteria.

Maddison will no doubt continue to produce this standard of work which will lead to her obtaining a Distinction* overall for this course.

Areté Excellence of any kind Maths STEM Week by Erin Walsh, Year 9 Student

As part of STEM week in the Maths department, Year 9 have been studying mathematical art.

A cardioid is a plane curve traced by a point on the perimeter of a circle that is rolling around a fixed circle of the same radius. It can also be defined as an epicycloid having a single cusp. It is also a type of sinusoidal spiral, and an inverse curve of the parabola with the focus as the center of inversion.

Cardioids are used in real-life in acoustics, and in representing fractals in chaos theory.

Erin has used modulus 60 to create an envelope of a pencil of lines, and has made a great example of this special mathematical shape.
