Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté.

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students.

Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day.

We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas.

Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day.

Areté Excellence of any kind Geography Fieldwork by Lily Ng, Year 10 Student

Lily has demonstrated excellent data presentation skills in Geography.

As part of her fieldwork, Lily first collected data to assess the urban environmental quality of different areas within Stratford. Lily then continued her geographical enquiry by presenting her findings in the form of a radar chart.

The work produced is excellent as Lily has presented her data clearly and accurately, allowing for subsequent data analysis in order to reach valid conclusions.

Paloma independantly created excellent jam tarts without any assistance and cleaned impeccably after lesson, as always.

Not only were they delicious but they were beautifully presented with great attention to detail.

KS3 students have been learning about holidays and past tense activities using Spanish grammar rules.

This writing by Gracie has exceeded the expectations of what is required of a pupil of this age and has achieved 100%.

She has written perfectly and has applied all the grammatical rules and how words are spelt impeccably.

Give two things you can infer from Gott’s interpretation about the British Empire.

This question asks for the student to ‘infer’ what the writer is saying to the reader.

It is a short passage from a text and the student is required to say what they think the writer is conveying and with their own knowledge, reach a conclusion about the text.

Claudia has used quotations from the text to illustrate and justify why she has come to this opinion of what Gott is saying to the reader. She has also demonstrated that she has understood what she has learnt about the British Empire in this term’s scheme of learning. Claudia has produced an outstanding, developed answer which shows her excellent grasp of the topic.
