Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté.

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students.

Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day.

We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas.

Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day.

Erin has demonstrated her graph drawing skills, while measuring the rate of reaction in a Chemistry lesson.

She has expertly plotted two sets of experimental data, and has even used a tangent to find the rate of reaction of the curved part of the line of best fit.

In gymnastics we were looking at balances as a unit of work; individually, in pairs and groups.

Balances in gymnastics need to be aesthetically pleasing, by keeping body tension and pointed toes at all times, as can be seen in the photos. The students also demonstrated different levels as their balances were not always at the same height, and how to move themselves, under, over and through each other during a balance.

Movement between each balance was also practiced, through locomotion, for example different rolls, like a forward roll and jumps. Once this was achieved, we then looked at how to utilise equipment, based on rhythmic gymnastics. We used balls, hoops and benches as an added element to the routines.

The students all completed their routines, and performed them to their best ability, producing some fantastic results at the end of the four-week unit.

Areté Excellence of any kind Maths Properties of Angles & Shapes by Tamzin Alejo, Year 7 Student

This term we have been looking at the properties of angle and shapes.

Angles are used in daily life.

Engineers and architects use angles for designs, roads, buildings and sporting facilities. Athletes use angles to enhance their performance.

Carpenters use angles to make chairs, tables and sofas.

Artists use their knowledge of angles to sketch portraits and paintings.

Tamzin has successfully completed her work on angles to a very high standard.

The poster includes a wide range of elements from the Periodic Table, grouped together correctly.

The poster is well-presented, using an excellent range of artistic and design skills.

Alex has shown a very good understanding of the classwork we are currently studying in Science, and in particular, the Periodic Table.
