Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté.

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students.

Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day.

We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas.

Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day.

We hope you enjoy this selection of excellent work.

Areté Excellence of any kind Geography Should we preserve Antarctica? by Liam Stevens, Julie-Anne Robinson & Berrie Harper Year 9 Students

This term Year 9 students have been exploring the question “Should we preserve Antarctica?” Last week students were tasked with creating a climate graph illustrating the weather conditions during different months of the year, at the Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. The groups were then challenged to manipulate their data by calculating the average wind speed and temperature. Finally, the students were then able to describe and analyse their data.

Students were incredibly proud of their progress in this lesson and produced some fabulous, geographically accurate, graphs. Here you will see examples of excellent work from Liam, Julie-Anne and Berrie.

Areté Excellence of any kind Photography Surrealism by Sienna Low, Year 10 Student

This is a lovely example of how to combine Pop culture with Surrealism.

The task really gets students to consider the role of creative individuals within the industry.

We can see not only the use of a specialist program, but the intellectual thought process that is required when working to a brief.

Sienna has constructed a visually stunning response by the editing and positioning of her layers and has clearly documented her conceptual thought process.

Areté Excellence of any kind Statistics Time Series by Qiao Ling Chu, Year 10 Student

Year 10 students have just completed their Time Series Unit in Statistics GCSE. This unit generated much conversation as to how businesses can use Moving Averages, determine Seasonal Variations and look at what the data shows about its trends.

In Qiao’s work here, she clearly demonstrates how the Moving Average covers one complete season and how to populate the data.

Qiao depicts fantastic clarity of moving from collecting data to representation of data, to analysing data. She has shown this by graphically showing the Time Series and marking on the Moving Average to generate her trend line. From this, data is analysed to look at where it falls in reference to the trend line, what the seasonal variations are throughout the seasonal cycle and predict values for the future of the business.

Students were asked to write examples and complete written content in line with the Unit 3, Assignment 1 criteria.

Katie has well thought out explanations and working practice examples throughout her assignment.

She is in the process of finishing off Distinction work of similarities and differences of two case studies.

This half term, Year 9 History students have been studying the Civil Rights movement in the USA. As part of their study, they worked in small groups to research a key aspect of the movement. These included the Brown vs Board of Education ruling; Rosa Parks; the Little Rock 9 and Martin Luther King.

The groups then delivered an 8 minute presentation to their class on their chosen aspect. The presentations delivered showed an excellent understanding of the key events and challenged students to give a presentation in front of their peers, which is no easy task!

Well done to all students.
