Excellence of any kind

Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Resilience, Excellence and Respect, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day. We hope you enjoy this selection of excellent work. J B et t s Principal

Areté Excellence of any kind Music Project Plan by Alanna Stockbridge, Year 11 Student

Alanna is showing excellent preparation for her Unit 203 assignment. Next term, our Rockschool Music students will be required to write a piece of music according to a brief. To prepare for this, we have spent this half term working on a mock Controlled Assessment, using a specimen paper to set a vocational context. Alanna has shown excellent focus in planning for this, using the grading criteria in great detail so that her work will meet the aims of the assessment. She has methodically addressed all areas of the planning process, ensuring that she will be able to work very confidently on the exam brief when it is released to learners in January 2022. Areté Excellence of any kind Sports Science Methods of Training by Lyla D’Silva, Year 11 Student Lyla has produced work for Sports Science focusing on the methods of training required for sporting athletes to succeed. She has demonstrated a full understanding of each section of this piece of work and completed this using a full range of examples and contexts. This means that she has worked in the top of mark band 3, which will enable her to achieve a Distinction grade for this unit of work. Lyla continues to produce this level of work in each learning objective she completes and should be extremely proud of her achievements. Miss Lauren Jones Head of PE & Vocational

Areté Excellence of any kind Photography Conceptual Surrealism by Arielle Stanley, Year 10 Student Year 10 Photography students have been exploring Conceptual Surrealism. Famous Surrealist photographers have been researched and studied. This has been the inspiration for the response shown. Arielle has looked at the work of Tommy Ingberg and created her own adaptation of a famous photo using Adobe Photoshop. This is an excellent example of how to develop a final piece from an initial point of inspiration. The level of technical skills and conceptualism delivered in Photography lessons has led students to create wonderful things, as seen in Arielle’s powerful and fascinating response. Areté Excellence of any kind Science pH Scale by Alana Prosser, Year 7 Student Alana has beautifully demonstrated her knowledge of the pH scale from her Science lessons with Miss Davies. She has added her own advanced knowledge of the pH scale to this presentation. Well done Alana. Miss Edwards Head of Science

Areté Excellence of any kind English Shakespeare’s Intentions by Sanskriti Thakali, Year 10 Student

Sanskriti has done exceptionally well in this assessment. In her response she has started to critically engage with the text, showing a great understanding of the writer’s intentions. She has been able to make clear statements on how Shakespeare’s intentions and use of language will affect the audience’s perceptions of Macbeth at the start of the play, subsequently impacting their views on him by the end of the play. Sanskriti has managed to embed the contextual setting of gender tropes and women’s subserviency into her analysis of how Macbeth is emasculated and manipulated frequently by Lady Macbeth, who greatly influences his violent behaviour. This was a fantastic piece of work and first assessment in Year 10 and I look forward to seeing her progression. Miss Griffith-Sackey English Teacher
