Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Culture, Character, Currency and Commitment, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. Arete Excellence of any kind Music Dance Music by Daniel Nartea, Year 9 Student
Daniel has been learning about dance music in his Year 9 music lessons. He has been able to use this music sequencing software on the internet, which means he can work at home, as well as in his Music lessons. This term he has looked at drum programming, audio editing and chord sequences as part of his assessment work. Through his own independent work he has been learning about basslines and drops too. Daniel’s work shows a good awareness of structure, texture and phrase length in dance Music. Mr Searl Head of Performing Arts
AretĂŠ Excellence of any kind Computer Science Programming by Marvin Copleston, Year 10 Student In Computer Science, students have been studying the concept of Selection in the programming language of Python. Marvin grasped this concept very early on and wanted to extend his learning. Marvin was tasked with designing a program that populated an array with random numbers. An array is a data structure that holds a wide range of variables of similiar nature. This area of programming historically has been a challenge for even the most confident of programmers. Marvin was able to complete the task effectively using computational thinking and a logical approach to the task. AretĂŠ Excellence of any kind Spanish Speaking Assessment by Connie Leggett, Year 8 Student This is a very impressive start to the year in Spanish for a Year 8 student who only started learning the language in March. Listening is notoriously difficult to score high grades, as you do not have much time to assimilate to the sound of the language when entering a classroom after studying and speaking in English all day. However, Connie has achieved 100% in her Spanish Listening Assessment. This is excellent progress and I hope it gives Connie the confidence to continue her language studies.
