At the end of a long term, it is important to look back and reflect on the work, experiences and achievements gained. For many it has been a term of firsts – for Year 7 their first term at secondary school and all of the changes which that can bring – a new building, new teachers, new friends and new experiences. For many of those who participated in the Colchester Academy X Factor Final, it was the first time they had stood on a stage in front of their peers. The talent was incomparable, with judges having such a difficult decision on who the winners should be – many, many congratulations go to Molly and Brogan the two winners of the day. From students competing in the North Essex Maths Olympiad to raising money for Acorn House, supporting the families of sick children being treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, a charity so close now to our own hearts, students have really stepped up proving that the learning here goes far beyond lessons. A special and individual congratulations must go to all of those students who have demonstrated improvement within the Autumn Term – be it large or small – be it representing the Academy, having work recognised and published, or feeling more confident within themselves and improving their behaviour. Well done – we are proud of you. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on 6 January – fully rested and in perfect uniform, ready for the opportunities that Spring Term will bring. On Friday 25 October Colchester Academy held a non-uniform day in memory of Dylan Thomas, a Year 9 student who very sadly passed away in September. Dylan was a fond wearer of camouflague and we invited students to wear the same in memory of Dylan.

The non-uniform day was in aid of Acorn House, an organisation who have supported Dylan’s parents. Acorn House is part of the Sick Childrens’ Trust. The £442.69 raised will ensure Acorn House is able to offer support to other families and children in the future.

I studied a degree in Computer Science which included design principles design and 3D modelling. My client base grew and I was fortunate to be able to leave university with a small, but established, limited company. After 4 long years working in the IT industry and working the majority of the year, I decided one morning to stop. Staff News Maths NEMO Competition A number of our brightest Year 9 and Year 10 mathematicians recently competed against many teams from other schools around the North Essex region, representing Colchester Academy in an exemplary manner. The competition itself requires students to answer a variety of maths related problems, which entail high end mathematical thought and many problem-solving puzzles to be completed as a group. I am very proud to witness first hand a fantastic team ethic among all teams that competed on behalf of Colchester Academy and a real desire to achieve and give their all. The Year 10’s started very well in the opening round, but despite a valiant effort, did not quite make it to the podium.
