Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Culture, Character, Currency and Commitment, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. Areté Excellence of any kind Music Pop Music by Taylor Gledhill, Year 9 Student
Taylor has been working hard in his Music lessons. His class has been learning about pop music, through the use of a four-chord pattern (I, V, VI, IV). Once given this basic outline, Taylor has used different effects and rhythms to give his music an individual identity. He has also written triadic melodies, and used retrograde techniques in order to make an innovative composition. Throughout this process, Taylor learned new compositional techniques with established genres, demonstrating excellent creativity in his musical work. Mr Searl Head of Performing Arts
Areté Excellence of any kind Spanish Carnival Competition by Aman Naeem, Year 7 Student Aman participated in the carnival competition, winning first prize with this fabulous mask. He showed amazing knowledge and skills about the festival, which influenced this lovely carnival mask he created. In our department we immerse students in the Spanish culture and we learned about one of the most famous festivals in Spain; “el carnaval”. This carnival in Cádiz is considered one of the best in Spain, with Cádiz recognised as an international tourist destination. Miss Valverde Spanish Teacher

Areté Excellence of any kind English Homework Writing by Sanskriti Thakali, Year 9 Student In this piece of homework, Sanskriti demonstrates an outstanding understanding of Mr Utterson’s character. Within the homework, she has considered a wide range of themes in Jekyll and Hyde and has been able to convey her excellent understanding of the contextual factors that would have affected Mr Utterson. This is even more impressive when considering this was one of her first pieces of work. Well done Sanskriti. Mr Rowley English Teacher
Areté Excellence of any kind Computer Science Programming by Marvin Copleston & Daniel Johnson, Year 10 Students In Year 10 Computer Science, students have been testing their programming skills, attempting the exemplar programming challenges released by the exam board. The challenges have been designed to provide students and teachers with an understanding of their final programming assessment at the end of their GCSE studies. As a class, we completed the first 3 tasks; a challenge for most. Marvin and Daniel used their excellent programming knowledge to complete all of the challenges available with no support from myself. This is particulalry impressive as both students have not yet been taught the content in lessons. Both students achieved full marks in their assessments. Mr Wills Assistant Principal

Areté Excellence of any kind Maths Solving Equations by Gracie Kelsey, Year 7 Student
Year 7 students are currently learning how to Solve Two Step Equations. We began by drawing upon prior knowledge of Function Machines, which they would all remember from Primary school. From this we added to our mathematical knowledge by learning how to inverse operations, the meaning of the equal sign and how to keep the equation balanced. This student excellently demonstrates the thought process required through the function machine in order to be able to solve equations efficiently, and be able to independently check that they have solved the equation correctly.
