Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté.

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students.

Based on our values of Culture, Character, Currency and Commitment, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day.

We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas.

Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day.

Arete Excellence of any kind Spanish Creative Writing by Maisie Furr, Year 8 Student

Maisie Furr’s piece of Spanish writing is outstanding.

She has used the writing strip successfully. She has insured that throughout her writing, while producing answers for the 4 bullet points, she has included the majority of the grammar points without the need for additional support.

In addition, she included 4-time phrases and diminutives such as – abuelita.

The overall piece has a beautiful flow to the style of writing.

AretĂŠ Excellence of any kind Statistics Population Pyramids by Ellie-May Cutter, Year 9 Student

In Statistics, we have been working on different methods of analysing and presenting data. Ellie-May has produced some excellent work on two different types of graphs. Population Pyramids are used to show the proportion of each age range for two groups within a population; in this case, Ellie-May has used them to analyse the population distribution of Bangladesh, and how it is predicted to change over time.

Choropleth maps split a geographical area into regions, and each region of the map is shaded depending on the value of the data. Ellie-May used crime statistics to create a choropleth map of London, showing the incidence of offences across London boroughs.

Ellie-May’s work is always analytical, precise and beautifully presented.

Areté Excellence of any kind English Extended Writing Question by Thomas Boswick, Year 11 Student

Year 11 students have been practising their English Language writing skills. They have been focusing on Paper 2 and the extended writing question - number 5. This piece of work was marked and graded for the students, with a total mark out of 40.

Tom’s work is a fantastic demonstration of what 100% effort, dedication and care can achieve. Here I can see Tom’s potential and I recall him being extremely happy with this piece. He has used: a range of sentences, language techniques, punctuation and vocabulary to convey a very important message in a mature manner. He has written a compelling, persuasive piece which would call anyone into action. As a result of this, he scored 38/40 which is fantastic.

Arete Excellence of any kind Music Minimalist Music by Daniel Johnson, Year 9 Student

Our Year 9 students have recently been working on Minimalist music. They have researched and composed music in a Minimalism style, using many of Steve Reich’s pioneering techniques. Daniel’s work showed a full range of minimalist techniques in his work. Through doing this he was able to show that he can extend ideas and motifs in this style.

He has shown an excellent command of music technology skills (recording and editing), but also works confidently in this musical style. Our students were expected to show four techniques, and Daniel was able to use many more than required.
