GCSE Success Colchester & Academy Information Evening

Wow – what a busy and long half term it has been. We have had 8 weeks of great learning, from form time morning yoga to focus the mind and prepare the body to Year 7 re-enacting the Battle of Hastings. With such great focus from students, I would like to thank parents for your support for learning – I am very well aware that those high-quality swords and shields from Year 7 did not make themselves! A reminder that homework is set through our knowledge organisers and if misplaced the latest versions can always be found on our website, under the homework tab. Highlights for me this half term have been the range of learning opportunities available to students, as we continue to develop these both inside and outside of the classroom. Geography challenged students to an ‘Escape Room’, where students had to research key facts about the Amazon Rainforest in order to crack the code to the treasure chest. Year 7 learners in English have been trying to solve a crime, whilst simultaneously improving their writing skills – the culprit is revealed later on in this issue. Our three parental engagement opportunities have been well attended this half term – Year 7 Tutor Evening, Year 11 Success Evening and our brand-new Parents’ Forum. Thank you for the fantastic feedback during all events – working in partnership with parents is essential to the success of your young person. Open Evening and our three Open Mornings were attended by in excess of 500 people, it was an absolute pleasure to meet with and show round so many people positive about the direction of the Academy and in awe at the learning they saw. Comments from parents such as “I am so impressed with Colchester Academy, I will definitely be putting it down as first choice...” and “how lovely it is to see such a kind and enthusiastic staff body” really do mean a lot to us. I would like to finish by wishing everyone a safe and restful half term and look forward to welcoming you all back in full uniform in November.

It was an absolute pleasure to open our doors to our Year 11 parents on Thursday 26th September 2019. The evening was a great success offering plenty of information from how to stay calm, relaxed and yet strive to achieve during the exam season, to revision techniques, curriculum revision guides, information on sleep and exercise, past papers, further education and apprenticeship providers and last but not least, food demonstrations and samples from the PiXL recipes. Parents were wonderfully supportive of their children and feedback was highly complementary. It was the first time I had the privilege to meet most parents and it was obvious to me how lucky the students are to have such supportive families. The evening was designed to give as much information as possible, to reduce fears and above all give all our students the message that we, the school and their families, are with them every step of the way!

Education, provides us all with the opportunity to improve ourselves and make a positive difference to others. All this is achieved through a greater understanding of our world, society and local communities. Education means we can interact better and support others around us. My key subjects are Business Studies and ICT. Before I became a teacher, I worked in London for a Japanese Bank. I looked after the front office, the “money making” side of the bank, as a Human Resources Newsletter Business Partner; this involved hiring and firing of staff, working with the departments to create teams for projects, training and development, staff attendance and performance management. Coffee Morning

On Friday the 27th of September The CoPE group held a coffee morning to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Charity. The CoPE group researched the charity to find out about them and what they do to help people. They also looked at how they are funded and how they raised money to deliver their services. The students wanted to hold a coffee morning to help raise some money and support them. Robert Banks made some cakes (with the help of his Nanny) and the group brought in some other sweet treats. Leo Slater & Robert gave up their break and lunch time to help sell cakes and drinks. They raised £49.37 for Macmillan.

Staff News Mr St Claire will be running in the London Marathon in 2020 for Crohn’s and Colitis UK, Mr St Claire has taken part in multiple half marathons and conquered all thus far, training will continue in November with the Hertfordshire half marathon. Year 9 students have been getting involved with fundraising in school and showing a real interest in wanting to help, students have had the opportunity to purchase wristbands and badges during form time this week and will continue into next week to support for the charity. What is Crohn’s and Colitis? They are a form of inflammatory bowel disease, an invisible chronic condition and one that causes stigma, fear and isolation. There is no cure and treatments can vary with individuals but in most cases multiple drugs are taken to control the symptoms to stay in remission but can also involve surgery. Regular blood samples must be taken and long stays in hospital is also common. If you would like to show support there will be a donation box in reception where you can leave a contribution.

Year 9 have been learning all about the Day of the Dead festival and have used ideas from this colourful Mexican holiday to create imaginative portraits. Students were asked to study a famous portrait and turn it into a celebratory Day of the Dead style portrait. Here are two of the most successful ones. Daniel Johnson was inspired by Van Goghâ€™s self portrait and Amelia - Jane Lee was inspired by the Mona Lisa.

History Students had to design their own swords and shields ready to reenact the Battle of Hastings. The students with the best shields played the roles of Harold and William. The students went through the key moments in the battle, with the Normans charging the Saxons shield wall. This first half term, Year 7 have been busy trying to investigate a crime at Colchester Academy: one of our members of staff was caught stealing school resources and selling them on! The crack team of CA Detectives worked hard and were able, using their skills in English, to identify the perpetratorâ€™s linguistic fingerprint and identify it as that of - Mr Fleury! Mason, Keira, Yara, Connie, Thushara and Ashlee all stood up in assembly and delivered their reports which meant we could safely say that he was the chief culprit!
