Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our latest issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Culture, Character, Currency and Commitment, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. Arete Excellence of any kind English Macbeth by Skye Marzell, Year 10 Student
Year 10 are currently studying Macbeth in English and I asked them to come up with a poster for the play which includes key themes. Skye has achieved this in her beautifully designed poster along with a key quotation. The idea of appearance versus reality runs throughout Macbeth and it is never clear to what extent the witches, through their equivocating, are manipulating Macbeth. This is reflected in Skye’s poster through the puppet but also the inverted crown and key quotation. Ms Macmillan Head of English
AretÊ Excellence of any kind Photography Day of the Dead by Jay Cranfield, Year 9 Student In photography, students have been studying the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday which is celebrated throughout Mexico. This is a celebration of life and death. Jay has created a montage based on this theme which will be used for his title page in his project. Recently, Year 11 students have been studying the concept of selective breeding; a process where humans breed plants and and animals for particular genetic characteristics.
