Year 11 are working very hard following their Mock results and revision lessons seem to be full to bursting most nights of the week. The National School Performance Tables were published last week and I am very pleased to share with you that Colchester Academy is in the top 40% of Essex schools â€“ a testament to the hard work and commitment from staff, students and parents. Lower down the school students are working hard across a range of subjects in the classroom and outside of the classroom participation in extra-curricular clubs is rising. Please encourage your child to become involved in one of the range of clubs on offer to them. Despite some recent publicised storms, it seems that Spring is just around the corner. Please take some time to review the school closure procedures on the website, and if there have been any changes within your contact addresses or phone numbers please ensure you contact the school office with your new details. With our growing pupil numbers we are expanding our staffing, and are pleased to be announce the appointment of an additional Vice Principal, Mr Pickering, who will be joining the school at Easter. Mr Pickering will be leading a large team on all pastoral matters and I am sure he will meet a greet many of you in due course. N e w s S t o r y T i t l e Colchester Academy Ms MacMillan Team Leader of English A proud Northerner, hailing from the North-East of England, my education was very much non-traditional. I was home-educated and didn’t begin my university education until I was the mother of three young children. I gained an honours degree in English Language and Literature which I followed up with a Master’s in Education, specialising in Applied Linguistics. Before I came into teaching, I turned my hand to many things – the plethora of jobs I have had include labouring for a landscape gardening firm, running my father’s post office and newsagents, making furniture and working as a nursing auxiliary. One day, when my children were young, I saw the adverts on TV for teaching and decided to look into it further as I had always loved English Literature. Nine years of hard work later, I was employed as an English teacher. I joined Colchester Academy as Team Leader of English in January, having been given the Newsletter privilege of leading a team of dedicated and enthusiastic English teachers. I believe that English is at the heart of education – it facilitates and supports student progress in all subjects, while giving each student a voice of their own, teaching them how to use that voice Aenean erosthelorem, a magna effectively.
