Excellence of any kind
Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction Welcome to our first issue of Areté. Here at Colchester Academy we strive to ensure that our young people receive the very best education, realise their full potential and are prepared to become responsible and successful citizens. We make a real difference to the lives and outcomes of our students. Based on our values of Culture, Character, Currency and Commitment, we ensure that we make the most of every learning experience, every day. We are very proud of the work our students create every day. In light of this, we have created Areté; a collection of excellent work from a range of subject areas. Areté in its basic sense, means “excellence of any kind”. In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This is what we expect from our students every day. We hope you enjoy this selection of excellent work.

Arete Excellence of any kind Mathematics Statistics by Charles Madridanpo
Students were investigating the Capture-Recapture formula, (also known as the Lincoln-Petersen method) which is used to estimate large populations, where it is difficult to count items exactly. An example of this might be the number of fish in a lake. In Maths classes, this is not studied until Year 11, and then only by top set classes. However, the Year 9 Statistics group did amazingly well and completed the work. They modelled the scenario using cereal. A sample of the ‘fish’ were removed and replaced by a different colour cereal. When a second sample was taken, the proportion of coco pops in the rice krispies was used to estimate how many ‘fish’ were in the bowl. Miss West Head of Maths
Areté Excellence of any kind Geography How could we create a more sustainable school? by Kira Weeder, Simone Gentry, Angel Akatobi & Brandon Taylor
As part of their final topic in Year 9 last year, 9C/Gg1 were tasked with carrying out a fieldwork project to answer the question “How could we create a more sustainable school?”. Fieldwork is an essential aspect of Geography. It ensures that students are given the opportunity to consolidate and extend their geographical understanding by relating learning to real experiences of the world. Students were given the opportunity to choose how they collected and recorded their data before walking within the school grounds to assess the quality of the environment. It was a delight when Mrs Betts commented on the excellent conduct of the students whilst they were out and about around school collecting their data. Students then offered their suggestions on how the school could be more sustainable. Miss Kelly Geography Teacher

Arete Excellence of any kind Spanish Structures by Louise Newberry
Louise Newberry achieved a grade 5+ in the September evaluation. She always challenges her learning in order to achieve her best. In this piece of improved work, Louise chose from the KS GCSE booklet 3 grade 7 + structures. She first worked out the meaning of the structures, then worked on understanding the grammar requirements of the structure, moving onto memorising, only after she put it into context. What makes this work outstanding is the approach the student took; to understand grammatically and then memorise the structures and only after this to apply it in context. Due to this approach Louise can now use and adapt these structures for different themes studied in our GCSE curriculum. Miss Constantinescu Head of MFL
AretĂŠ Excellence of any kind Science Stem Cell Research by Leah Henman
Leah conducted her own research into the two different methods of obtaining stem cells - by extracting adult bone marrow, and using embryos. She has evaluated each method and clearly shown the advantages, disadvantages and general facts about different ways to obtain stem cells. She has finished off by weighing up the advantages and disadvantages and giving her own, very mature opinion on stem cell treatment. Miss Edwards Head of Science

Arete Excellence of any kind Music 80’s Indie by Shanice Bond
As part of their Level 2 Rockschool course, our students were required to investigate an area of music. They looked into the most influential artists, recordings and genres relating to their chosen style, along with important fashion and imagery of the time period. Shanice’s work was agreed at a Distinction Level as a thorough and detailed account of 80’s Indie, drawing on a wide range of sources to formulate a comprehensive account of rock music in the 1980’s.
