It seems as though this year has progressed so quickly and we are already at the start of the Summer Term. Year 11 are working so well towards their GCSE exams, the first time in two years where a cohort will sit external exams, and they are preparing so diligently – well done Year 11.

National Offer Day was Tuesday 1 March, where Year 6 students received their school place preferences for September 2022. We are extremely pleased that we are full for the new cohort and we look forward to seeing them as they transition during this term, along with meeting any new parents to the Academy.

This comes from an old Japanese tradition where people fold 1,000 cranes to make their wishes and hopes come true. We didn’t quite make 1,000 but they do make such a positive splash of colour in our windows. Any student who made one will see their crane hanging up and hopefully remember the Newsletter positive wish for the future contained within it. Ms Coburn Team Leader Art & Technology

Now the world has begun to open up again, our trips have resumed and it is fantastic to see and hear from our students as they describe the experiences they have had participating in these activities. Sport fixtures have also been reinstated and students are relishing the opportunity to play other schools in the local area. The attitude towards these games and matches is superb, with students being proud of their peers for participating and lots of lunchtime discussions about formations and tightening up the defence!

World Book Day In this age of unrelenting information, 24-hour news, social media, and COVID-based restrictions on On Tuesday 1 March, Colchester Academy held an our lives, it’s no surprise that many of us have recently, at times, felt overwhelmed. Wembley Trip Women’s FA Cup Final – Sunday 5 December 2021 Colchester Academy were excited to invite 12 Year 11 students to the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday 5 December, to watch the London derby, Chelsea v Arsenal (the final had been delayed from May, due to a backlog of fixtures caused by the pandemic). The trip was a reward to students who had made the most progress in Sports Science and BTEC Sport, and had also attended Period 6 sessions throughout the first term. We set off in the Academy minibus and after a quick stop at the Services, we arrived at Wembley, the golden arch illuminated in red and blue to represent the teams’ colours. Once through the security checks, we made our way to our seats, opposite the half way line. Despite the roof being open and the persistent rainfall, the atmosphere inside the stadium was electric, heightened by the cauldron of noise being generated from each group of supporters. This was a very special occasion as it was the 50th anniversary for the FA Cup Final in the women’s game. What did you have to do to get here?

In order to earn a chance at the position, you had to write an application explaining a little bit about yourself, who you are, what you do and what you stand for. That profile got sent out on a ballot paper to each Academy Head, who read them all and decided who they wanted to elect.

What previous experience have you had to prepare you for roles like this? I have done 11 years of Headship and five years as a CEO. You learn to look at information, analyse it and try to make a determination about what’s in the best interest of schools. You look at finances and you look at the viability of Trusts, in order to assemble an informed decision on the application each school puts in.

Realise your Potential with Make Happen What kind of role will you play in supporting schools like ours?

In this role I do not go out and support schools directly. It is quite literally an admin role to read paperwork around growth, but as a CEO, my responsibility is to work with Mrs Betts, Colchester Academy Principal, and the other Headteachers in our Trust, in an attempt to make sure you have the resources, facilities and teachers to bring about the best outcomes. Ultimately, I have responsibility to the Board for all five schools.

What opportunities will this open up for Colchester Academy and other schools in Essex? What does this mean for us?

Basketball Match Reports Match Report 1 It has been 2 years since we have been able to host another school and compete in external school fixtures, when Colchester Academy played The Colne Community School in the Year 10 boys basketball home game. It was a fast game from the go, with our boys on the back foot from an excellent Colne attack and a well drilled side of what looked like giants in height. We were 12 points down and our team fought back during the second and third quarters with the baskets starting to fall our way. With advice and support from Mr Flaherty, our team settled and restructured. Both teams started to look more balanced. Colchester Academy defended well and had fast breaks to score, but The Colne were sharp and they had an expectionally talented student who dominated the game, scoring most of their baskets. Unfortunatley, our team could not close the gap created in the first and second quarters and we lost 56-24. The energy, effort and resilience that Colchester Academy showed was not reflected in the score. The Year 10 boys did a great job representing the school and playing a competitive and fair game. Well done, onwards and upwards to our next game!

Match Report 2 Our Year 10 boys basketball team hosted TLA the following week and had an extremely close match, battling right down to the last 3 seconds. The teams were very closely matched and very competitive, TLA took the lead by some good rebounding and pressure within our Key. We defended hard and attacked but could not always score on our lay ups.

At half time we were level at 31 points each. With 30 seconds left on the clock Colchester Academy scored an excellent lay up to win the game. Well done boys.
