Areté Excellence of any kind Introduction W elcom e to our final Arete of the academ ic year 2022-2023.

As John W G ardner said, “Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily w ell.” This is w hat w e celebrate, our students w ho hold excellence as a core value, and strive to do their best each and every day.

Arete is a celebration, in its m ost basic sense m eans ‘excellence of any kind’. In its earliest appearance in G reek, this notion of excellence w as ultim ately bound up w ith the notion of fulfillm ent of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s potential. This com m itm ent and engagem ent w ith their learning is w hat w e expect from our students every day.

Areté Excellence of any kind English English End of Year Assessment By Meghana Meda, Year 8 Student Year 8 have been studying Animal Farm all term and has developed an understanding of its characters and events being an allegory for the Russian Revolution in 1917. Alongside this contextual knowledge of the text, students have also been learning how to structure a good analytical paragraph, where they analyse language used within a text to create meaning. This piece of work was written by Meghana for her end of year, and end of unit, assessment, where she was required to analyse an extract from the text in order to answer the question given, as well as link to other parts of the text that she did not have access to during the exam conditions. Maghana not only demonstrated knowledge of the text in this piece, but also linked all events successfully the context in which it was written, and to Orwell’s intention when writing this novel.

The work and creativity that has been demonstrated with these two dishes is exemplary. Each student showed great commitment from planning, designing and creating two great dishes.

Areté Excellence of any kind Sports Day 2023 Whole School Event Sports Day this year was an absolute triumph, with competitors gaving their all, from tug of war, to javilin and testing who’s the fastest in various running events. Students competing, and those spectating showed high levels of commitment to the event, solidarity, team work, support and community cohesion. The festival vibe was driven by students and staff alike.

The day was a whole school community coming together to celebrate with one another, in making a wonderful day happen. So many medals were awarded and so much fun was had by all.

By Emma Carter, Year 7 Emma identified different enzymes produced in the body and how they help in the breakdown of food. She has shown her understanding by modelling it using different colured paper, explaing the enzyme-substrate complex. Emma successfully identified how enzymes work in the digestive system.

She works incredibly hard to ensure she understands the work well, enabling her to demonstrate this in her coursework.

As you can see from this extract, Connie makes sure she meets all of the criteria required to achieve the grade she is capable of. This is done through hard work and determination.

By Precious Amadin Imafidon Year 10 The Tunnock’s Teacake Challenge is to imagine the teacake is a dessert and present it in a unique, creative and show-stopping way, demonstrating three presentation techniques.This prepares them for the GCSE practical element of the course, where presentation is essential.

Meghana has designed a mask inspired by researching African masks. Instead of doing the basic homework of drawing a mask, she decided she would create one herself. Excellent result and a demonstration of going over and above.

By Bailey Edwards Year 9 Bailey was given a scenario to draw a circuit and create a Truth Table as part of our Logic Gates topic. He performed the task to an high level and produced an excellent result.

By Tehya Lydford Year 7 Tehya was inspired by the work of Jon Carling who creates magical drawings using pen, from his studio in northern Calafornia.

He uses layering lines and markings to provoke imagination. Tehya certainly used Caling’s techniques well and demonstrated a broad, creative imagination.
