Words of Wisdom To the Class of 1998: I was so pleased when The Oracle staff asked me if I would write a short message to the Class of 1998 for inclusion in your yearbook. It gives me a chance to say thank you to the members of the Class of 1998 for mak­ ing Colby a better place and for your friendship. Each of you will always be a part of Colby - and I hope that Colby will always be a part of each of you.

Mrs. Cotter and I have gotten to know a very large number of you individually during these four years. Many of you have worked with her on intern­ ships, field experiences, exchange programs, and study in Africa; and others have taken my class, Government

319, or served on various Trustee and College commit­ tees with us, or have been my advisees. Some of you have just dropped by the office to talk about a wide range of issues.

Many others we have gotten to know as we admired your performance on stage, on the athletic fields, in musical groups, in the Art Museum, or as you have otherwise participated in the vibrant life of the College. Your Student Government Association, Com­ mons leaders, and hall presidents have been especially ffective this year, as you helped the College refine its Residential Life Plan, designed the new Senior Pub, nd approved a plan to construct new senior apartments, among other important changes. Your new Stu­ ent Programming Board got off to a wonderful start this year, and I am certain that subsequent classes will uild on your good work.

We also had a spirited debate on NCAA post-season competition. I hope we will find a resolution 1at will strengthen NESCAC (and our NESCAC schedules) while at the same time giving our student thletes the chance to achieve excellence in post-season competition.

During these four years, we have watched you experiment and grow and mature- as you refined our own goals and fashioned your unique identities. And we have watched you care about others. I hope ·ou will not mind if we, too, beam a little when you get your degrees in May. We will miss you. Stay in Juch. Good luck - and do not forget to carry a good book!

To the Class of '98 ...

Some of my benighted faculty colleagues pull back when asked to write something for The Oracle becausf they fear having to become oracular, to predict what wisdom you will derive from their weighty pro­ nouncements when you re-read them in 2048 at your fiftieth Colby reunion. I may even retire before then (NOT this year, despite scurrilous rumors originated

by James Finney Boylan, who has been trying to get rid of me for a long time).

Not really. I'll be dead (or an unlikely 115 years old) in 2048. Will I care what you think? No, you loons, I will more likely be obsessed with the turf at the fam­ ily plot than with you elderly alums of the Class of

'98. So let me write for this year, for all of you at your glowing, healthy best (except for the early classes on Friday, when you all look like severely traumatized dress extras on E R

hey, you won't even remember B R in 2048). Let's deal with the present; let's ignore the -

fact that you don't have a job and your guilt-intensive father stares at you a lot while you're home. Carpe diem ..

What happens to you after Mayflower Hill? Well, very probably you'll start working at a horrific job, photocopying or entering data. For this you read The Sun Also Rises? solved for x? conjugated the French verb boire ('to drink") flawlessly? kept your bean plant alive by feeding it your own blood?

Yeah, though the connection isn't always clear, pundits CAN piece out the worthiness of the liberal arts to the rest of your lives. The point is not simply that your first job requires the I Q of a stalk of celery, but that you can read a book, or solve a problem, or judge a film, or write an analysis, or deal with people. In large part, you learned how here at Colby, not just in the classroom but on the field, or in the residence hall, or at the Writers Center, or volunteering with the soup kitchen.

You'll be what you want to be because you're pretty smart and fairly hard working and solidly talented, "98. I know, because your predecessors from classes all the way back to 1970 write or call to tell me how they have crawled out of the slime. They're vice presidents or painters exhibiting in San Francisco or nurse practitioners or TV weather persons. So too for you -- with effort.

But, hey, don't forget your Beloved Old Prof. At that SOth reunion, find the Bassett family plot in Waterville's St. Francis Cemetery and pour a bottle of dark ale over the turf in memory of the good times.

I'll appreciate it. Quietly.
