Remember That First Day You Came to Colby?

Your heart was pounding as you drove up Mayflower Hill, Eyes wide, hopes high, imagination soaring, you can't sit still Mom and Dad throwing out that last minute advice, Knowing contact only by phone allows you to think twice.

The car packed with stereo, phone, TV, VCR, and fridge to the top, Necessities without which your room would surely flop, You brought yearbooks, collages and your favorite teddy, Memories to share with new friends when you're ready, So you find your dorm only to discover, It had to be the third floor, no other.

You truck up the stairs, arms full of stuff, Hoping meeting your roomate won't be so tough, The car is unpacked and your room is a mess, But you're finally here, and you take a deep breath.

Then the class of 1997 convenes on the hill, To play first day of school �ame games, we know the drill.

You quickly head downtown for last minute supplies, And to People's Heritage where half the class waits in line.

This is when you discover Waterville's true hot spots, pizza Hut, 3 McDonald's, 2 Subways and Puffin Stop.

Then the parents all left and college had begun, Now seniors looking back, did we ever think it would be such fun?

FACULTY MESSAGE: CHARLES BASSETT I haven't been asked to write a page for THE ORACLE for several years now, so I've been feeling a little neglected . Some faculty HATE writing for college yearbooks, assuming that their sentiments have to rival Genesis or WAR AND PEACE. But I love writing this mate­ rial because I know that my page will be read once--mostly by the Class of '97--and then tucked away in a big box labeled "SAVE" and st9red behind the L.L. Bean parka and the plastic mugs from Champions in your largest closet.

Hey, I'm not etching this prose in glass (I once had a college sweetheart whose voice would etch glass, but only after she'd been drinking tequila). I'm writing primarily for the Class ol '97, and I do like that. A bloody good class too. I've known fewer of you than usual becausE I was on sabbatical leave in Fall '96 and haven't taught my normal mob seniors in the Short Story. But I've seen almost 30 classes freeze their way through Colby, and '97 is OK with me. Such '97 luminaries as Ben Russell and Susanna Montezemolo and Amy Rzeznikewicz and Rosa Chang and Josh Woodfork took their first Colby class with me (English Comp. 8:30 MWF). And I taught a tiny special topics class to some of these dingbats in Spr. '97. They're smarter.

You're ALL smarter. You've fought hard for four years to stave off knowledge with Clif's Notes and Shipyard, but something seeped through. In spite of yourselves, you learned a lot about a lot of stuff. Use­ ful and worthless, fun and drudgery. But you learned it at Colby from my col­ leagues and me. You also learned it in the Heights and in Bixler and in Miller and on Coombs Field. Yourself you learned it, in spite of snow in May and the closing of the Safari Bar. So graduate proudly, '97. Go off and save the world. But don't forget to ply me with carbonated malt beverages when I speak at your first reunion in (gasp") '02.

We are the children of the Eighties. We are not the first "'lost generation'· nor today's lo t generation; in fact, we think we know ju t where we tand--or are di covering it a we peak. We are the ones who played with Lego Building Blocks when they were just building block and ga e Malibu Barbie crewcut with safety ci

ors that never really cut. We collected Garbage pail Kid and

Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Ponie and Hot Wheels and He-Man action figure and thought She-Ra looked ju t a little bit like I would when I wa a woman. Bib Wheels and bicycle with streamer were the way to go, and sidewalk chalk was all you needed to build a city. Imagination wa the key. It made the Ewok Treehou e big enough for you to be Luke and the kitchen table and an old beet dark enough to be a tent in the fore t. Your world wa the backyard and it wa all you needed. With your pink portable tape player, Debbie Gib on ang back up to you and everyone wanted a kirt like the Material Girl and a glove like Michael Jack on s.

Today, we are the one who ing along with Bruce Sp1ing teen and The Bangle perfectly and have no idea why. We recite line with the Ghostbusters and till look to The Goonies for a great adventure. We flip through t.v. tation and top at "The A Team" and "Knight Rider' and ·'fame and laugh with "'The Co by Show"' and ·'Family Ties" and "Punky Brew ter" and what you talkin "bout Willi ? We hold trong affection for ·'The Muppets" and "'The Gummy Bear ··and why did they take "The Smurfs" off the air?

We are the ones who till read Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boy , the Bobb ey Twin , Beverly Clearly and Judy Blume. Richard Scary and watch The Electric Company. Friendship bracelets were ties you couldn't break and friend hip pin went on hoe --preferably hightop Velcro Reebok --and pegged jeans we in. a were Unit belt and layered socks and jean jacket and jam and charm necklace and ide pony tail and ju t tail . In the Eightie . we redefined the American Dream, and tho e year defined u . We are the generation in between trife and facing trife and not turning our back . The Eightie may have made u idealistic. but it' that idealism that will push us and be passed on to our children--the first children of the twenty-fir t century.
