The 1989 Colby White Mules came into the season with high aspirations after a respectable 4-4 record of 1988.

While all these aspirations were not quite met, the 1989 Mules finished, again, with a 4-4 record; a far cry from the 0-8 seasons of yester-year. The Mules also successfully defeated both Bates and Bowdion capturing the CBB title for the second year in a row, a fete which had not been accomplished since the early 1970's. While many fine seni­ ors are leaving, this does not diminish the future of Colby's football team. Coach Tom Austin and his staff have a fine job recruiting players to fill the gaps created and the future of the Mules looks bright well into the 1990's.

t is the Colby tradition for the President to address the seniors at Baccalaureates rather than Commencement.

Tomorrow I will speak mostly in Latin, and while my comments today will be somewhat longer, I hope they will at least be clearer.

I want to talk briefly with you this morning about what the future is likely to hold for the Class of 1990: your opportunities, of course, but also your obligations. And I want to talk about your power as individuals to make this a better world . . .

Your senior year has been described as "The Year of the Century." We have seen the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, the disintegration of the Cold War . . .

It is clearly in our national self-interest to support moves toward democracy and personal freedom abroad because democratic countries will not only have superior human right records, but they are less likely to constitute military threats to the United States. Yet, while encouraging the spread of democracy abroad, we must be especially protective of democratic institutions at home. Our citizens seem to have become apathetic about electoral politics which are, after all, the most effective way in which we can preserve our own freedom . . .

Colleges like Colby are particularly concerned with the individual, rather than the group. I know that I speak for other faculty and administrators when I say that the greatest joy for us in being at Colby has been the chance to get to know you, individually, as you have experienced the important growth which has occurred since your first year.

We have exalted in your intellectual development, your athletic achievements, and your artistic enrichment of our community, exemplified just today by the music at this baccalaureate and by the wonderful senior art show currently gracing our museum . . .

Our mission as a liberal arts college has been to help each of you develop your unique potential. H we have succeeded, you are now better able to distinguish fact from opinion; you are more tolerant of diversity and more compassionate toward others; you are intellectually curious and aesthetically aware; you are proficient writers and speakers of English who also possess a knowledge of a foreign language and culture; you are good at synthesis, as well as analysis; and you are broadly educated with depth in at least one major area. Both the faculty and the diploma which I will hand you tomorrow testify to these positive changes, and I believe that most of you could, as well.

It's traditional for the editor of the book to save the last page for any thank you's or comments they wish to be remembered. So, here are things I wish 10 be remembered . . .

It i s Saturday, August 25th, 1 990, when I'm writing this. I'm not happy that I've spent the entire summer finishing it, but at least it's done.

Printing blank pages did cross my mind, though.

Anne Cirillo and Melissa Lawton saved me. Pictures, copy, developing, senior section, sports, everything. Of course they are just noticing now that the senior group picture isn't the one they thought it would be, or the rest of the seniors did for that reason, but I'll explain below. All I want to say to you two are that you were great! Thank You. Paul Johnson is an angel. Thanks for not losing it when I went way over budget (did I tell you that everything turned out a little more expensive than I planned, but isn't this cover nice ! ? ! ) or when I needed a little extra help dealing with administration. Hey, thanks for the great room, too.

Megan Gaughan, my business manager. You rule the land, Meg. Jen Greenleaf, Jen Kosek, Sarah Hamilton, Christine Bonner, Craig Applebaum, Amy Partridge, Brooke Coleman, Shaun Crowley, Stu-A, and Public Affairs all were part of the picture and copy organization.

Thanks to anyone I happened to forget - this has been such a lengthy project that I'm sure that I've forgotten many.

The last people that I have to thank are all the people that have been affected by the various accidents that have happened while I was putting this book together. Many pages were destroyed while being shipped federal express, one being the senior group picture. But, things happen, and I tried to correct them the best I could. What more can one do.

So this is it. I started the book, almost to date, a year ago. Enjoy it. At least then I will know that my time was spent for something worthwhile.
