The Colby Oracle 1979

At Commencement every year I have addressed our newest alumni, in the first words spoken to them after they have received their di plomas, a non iam discipuli ed socii. And then I have gone on to add, after som rather elaborate exhortation in Latin, a final ave atque valete. This year that "hail and farewell" will have a pecial poignancy, for Mrs. S. and I will be leaving with you.

We alway felt that we had a special kin hip with the Class of 1964, for we entered with them, in a way, as Freshmen. hen they graduated we thought of them as "our first class. " On the eve of the return of that class for their fifteenth reunion we ourselves will be graduating (finally!) with your clas , the Cla s of 1 79. And now we will have a special kinship with you.

What will that kinship mean? Whether it means anything very special to you remains to be seen, but I think I know some of what it will mean to Mrs. S. and me.

We will always have in common our sense of belonging to this college. The ties that bind alumni to a college are lifelong, and sine over two decades of the most interesting years of our own lives have been devoted to Colby we share those ties with the alumni of our own time.

But beyond that, we share with the Class of 1979 the experience of enjoying the culminat­ ing years of an era of nearly half a century that has seen Colby come fully of age. It took that long after the courageous decision of the Board in 1930 (what a year to make such a decision!) to move Colby to Mayflower Hill for the building plans to be essentially com­ pleted and Colby's academic stature to reach its full growth. You were here as we came down the stretch, even though at the time you may not have known it. Changes will come in the decades ahead, good changes, and there will be further strengthening and further growth. But you wer here as we rounded out a major chapter in Colby history.

I hope we will not lose touch with you, our newest clas mates. We will always be interested in your careers and your families and your future. Good luck, and we hope our paths cross from time to time with some of your .
