A

FT E R four l ong and happy years spent at Colby the class of nine­ teen hundred and four s t ands upon a t h reshold, as it were, opening into a new and broader l ife . Soon we shall step across t he t h reshold and pull shut the door of undergrad uate l ife. B ut let u s push open the almost closed door to take one m ore farewell l ook before we close it up n ourselves for all time.

Loo k i n g backward t h rough the ope n door of college l i fe we see ourselves as a bunch of green Freshmen, ignorant of Col l ege activities and requirements N everth e less we were w il ling an d eager to learn and a year taught u s many things .

We look again and the group of Freshmen has changed to a lot of noisy, care-free Sophomores. What fun we had with the F resh ­ m en in general and with their reading in part icular. We won the class t rack gam es and entered every side of coll ege life.

O nce again we l ook back ward and see our selves grown into ] u n iors, e nj oying their so-called ''] u nior Ease" B u t we d id not find this year easy . Far from it . We settled d own to work in real earnest . O n ly the "Strike" occ urred to break the m onotony of our steady plugging.

A bo u t to c lose the d oor we take a last look over t h e last year.

Time has worked wo nd ers with us; b u t m ost of a l l it has thinned our ran ks from n early fi fty to an even sixtee n . But this h as only served to bri ng us closer together as c lassmates . We h ave taken an active i nt erest in, and furnished men for all kinds of col l ege activi t ies . Our record is one to be proud of.

I n a short t im e we sh a l l h ave to close the door on our col lege l ife and associat ions, to go out into t h e b roader school of the worl d . W e shall do t h i s bravel y and shall seek our fut ure with the kindest feel ­ i n gs toward the coll ege that has sheltered us for so long.

Mot h er Colby fl u ng wide her doors t o receive the class of r905, she litt le realized what a remarkable class was now en tering within her statel y wall s .

When Freshmen w e al ways had o u r eyes opened to the child ish pranks of the Sophomores. When they told us that Prexy's office was in Coburn H al l we nly pitied them that t h ey had been at Colby one whole year and did not know better. O ur peanu t d ru n k we carried out with great succes , for our c l a. s spirit alone was sufficient to m ake the Soph timid. At the end of the year came the Freshman Exit, which was the crowni n g glory of a year wel l spent.

The next Septem ber we returned , in numbers weakened, in abi l i ty strengthened, but ready to bear our Sophomore duties ' hich we soon found to be many ancl d iffic ul t . Our fir t great task was that o f re­ forming the Freshmen , and as far as t h i t ask could be accom plished we certai n l y d id our d uty . \ e have heard t h at one d ri n k always create the desire for another and th is proved true i n our case . The craving came upon u and we held another peanut d ru n k altho ugh it wa whol ly unplanned for by u . Everything went on smoot h ly in our Sophomore year u n t i l , alas and alack-the F resh man R eading. O ur brothers, feeling that they shou l d pay due respect to old-t i m e c u stom s, and th ink i n g that P rex_ ' s bark was worse tlnn h i s bite, formed in a body on that fatal night and marched to their doom . T h is brough t great woe upon us, for how could we get along without our brothers, upon whom we depended in all t h ings ? Sorrow overcam e us and we too, of our own accord, tu rned our bac ks upon Colby . Th u s ended our Sophom ore year.

But before th e opening of the next ) ear we b ad l ived down our great sorro'' , and on our return felt that the sun shone brighter after a cloud . The Faculty h ad e idently repented of their rash act and made the e xam s . wh ich h ad been so d readed, a decided snap. H aving passed through this ordeal we t u rned our attention to other thi ngs, and the J u n ior year h as proved no less enj oyabl e than the previous years . So far we have been loyal to Colby and we do not intend that our loyalty shall ever be l acking.

And i t is a matter o f common k nowledge that no class has ever done so m uch in o short a time to prove itself worthy of all honor from the t udent body a t large. But our m odesty wil l not allow u s t o d w e l l upon t h ese f a c t . n example or t wo will suffice. W h a t would our foot ball and basebal l team have done but for the ski l l and prowess of the m em ber from nineteen - i x ? They h ave brough t to the college what ver of u cess ha bee n won up to t h e presen t h o t 1 r i n athletic contests. nd in the l i n e of scholarsh i p , how we have laid low t h e profs i n spi te of t heir utmo t effort s to t r i p u s . But again I say, our m odesty forbids us t o dwell f urther upon t hese facts.

In one d irect ion alone ha the cla s failed t o perform wi t h credit the d u t ie wh ich h ave fallen to i t . In grappling with the problem of correctly t rai ning n i neteen-seven we m us t admi t that even our u n ­ e ' celled wisdom has been baffl ed-the task has been t oo great for m ortal man to accom pl ish .

I t wou l d i ndeed be d i ffi c u lt to estimate the benefit wh ich h as co m e N ew l i fe a n d spirit h ave t o the col lege because of our presence here . bee n aroused in every departm e n t of col lege act ivity by the com in g of t h e c lass of r n neteen-six. A nd now as we stand fac ing the stil l greater F roblems which await u s d u ring our remain i ng two years of college life, our h earts beat fi rm w i t h the h igh resol ve that the purpose t hat h as so far anim ated al l our acts shall con t i n u e to k eep us t rue to the best i n­ terests of the college. Yet even here we are rest rained by our modest y which forbids us t o a n t icipate our t riumphs, and which is, i n deed, the most characterist ic and w i n ning t ra i t of the c lass.

Yet in t hese days of psychological re­ earch t o recoun t the gradual unfol dings of the i n fant mind m igh t not be deemed so unworthy a task after all . But when the infant is born a fool, and h as no m in d to unfold I Oh, ye gods spare us the though t ! S uch i the lot of our infa n t bro t her, t h e class of 1 907 . A is often t h e case with the u n fort u nate " born fool " t h e babe is s t rong and l usty , ' ith every pro m ise of a long l ife . B u t that is all · it m ust al ways be a are and anxiety to its friends . I t s doings from its fi rst appearance i n chapel, spra wled out l ike some slobbering idiot, until t h e p r e ent hour ha\'e b e e n one con t i n uous demonstration of i t s lack of brains . B u t why record these distressing and d isgrace( u l act ions ?

One instance wil l s uffi c e . H ow characterist ic of the class were t h e decoration s used upon t h e exterior o f Thayer H al l at t h e t i m e o f t h e F resh man R eception ! H ow suggesti,·e t hat the poor babe still needed the guiding hand of a nurse to care for its wants ! Lovingly and ten­ derly bas t h e class of 1 906 attem pted t o fill the position of friend and guardian to t his forlorn and helpless member of the college fam i l .

But t h ough 1 906 is a class of u nexcelled t alent, of unwearied pat ience, and of unq uest io n ed wi dom , t h e task h as been beyond their power sadly t h ey acknowledge t h e fac t . To i n still wisdom i nto em pty space ; to c reate k nowledge o u t of not h i ngness ; this was i ndeed a vain attempt .

A nd now t h e child stands on t h e t h reshold of t h e Sophom ore year, all u n fi t ted for its heavy responsib i l it ies. Profe sor H atch was born in I sl esboro M aine, in 1 86 5 . H e com ­ pleted his course at Bucksport Seminary in 1 886 and entered Colb College from which he ' as graduated in 1 890, receiving the degree of A . B . He continued h i studie at N ewton Theological Seminary and wa graduated from there in 1 893. In thi ame year he wa ordained at I le boro M aine, but returned to Newton in the fal l a In t rue tor in Old Testament Studies. H ere he remained for four years. From that time until he came to Colby he was pa tor of the Baptist church at \ olfvil le, N. S .

D uring h is Senior year in college he w a Editor-in-Chief o f the Echo, and business Manager at the same time.

I n 1 898 Profe sor H atch received the degree of A . M . He ha ;pent two summers at the U niversity of Chicago and has published articles i n the Biblical World on Old Testament studies.
