about the colburn school An internationally renowned performing arts school located in the cultural corridor of downtown Los Angeles, the Colburn School provides the highest quality music and dance education to students at all levels of development, from beginners to those about to embark on professional careers.

The four academic units of the School are united by a single philosophy: that all who desire to study music or dance should have access to top-level instruction. Each year, more than 2,000 students from around the world come to the Community School of Performing Arts, Conservatory of Music, Music Academy, and Trudl Zipper Dance Institute. Serving all units of the School, the Center for Innovation and Community Impact prepares students for sustainable careers and nurtures the passion and ability to serve their communities.

Under the care and guidance of our exceptional faculty, musicians and dancers discover the joy and discipline of the performing arts. Performances in the community and on campus develop young artists and welcome audiences with over 350 free and low-cost performances annually. A Message from the President Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Colburn School for today’s performance. It is truly a privilege to include you in our audience—your presence provides incomparable support to our accomplished students, faculty, and guest artists who take the stage to share their talent and artistry with you.

Last semester was not only a period of transition for our community, but also a time to reconnect. Dedicated families returned to campus for classes; determined students continued pursuing their craft through in-person instruction.

Our world-class faculty rekindled the passion for learning in their studios and classrooms, and the unwavering support from our donors made it possible for students to once again be immersed in the Colburn experience. I am personally grateful for all the ways our community has adapted and grown in these past few months, and I am confident that our young artists will continue to thrive.

As our 2021–22 season continues this spring, there will be opportunities to see our Trudl Zipper Dance Institute students in action at Tap Fest and Counterpointe, to welcome our alumni back to Colburn through the Next Up series, and of course, to be inspired by our signature programs like the Colburn Orchestra and Colburn Chamber Music Society. We also invite you to join us for our annual Gala on April 3, where we will gather together to celebrate the start of the second decade of the Music Academy and to honor Jean-Yves Thibaudet for his artistic contributions to the School.

Colburn continues to prioritize the health and safety of our community, and we will be sure to keep you abreast of any changes to our event protocols. Philanthropy at the Colburn School Thank You for Your Support At the Colburn School, we are proud to offer over $9 million of scholarship support annually for more than 850 students from the Community School of Performing Arts, the Conservatory of Music, the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, and the Music Academy. A Message from the Dean Dear Graduates, It is a great pleasure to welcome you and your families to the Colburn Conservatory of Music’s 2022 Commencement ceremony.

One of the definitions of “graduate” is “to change… gradually or step by step.” All of us at Colburn—faculty, staff and your fellow students—celebrate with you not just this graduation day, but also each step you took on your path to this day, and the incredible resilience and courage that you demonstrated in achieving all that you have during a global pandemic. We will continue to celebrate your steps on the rest of your journey. You are our strongest ambassadors and advocates for what the Colburn School and the arts represent, and we look forward to a lifelong relationship with you.

I hope the experiences and opportunities you have enjoyed here will nurture you throughout your life, and that you will carry with you the principles of access to excellence, collaboration, ambassadorship, and the belief in the ability of your art to impact the world around you. You are leaving Colburn and going out into a changed world, one that needs who you are as artists and human beings more than ever. You embody our hope for a future that values empathy and kindness, and coming together in community to create something that is larger than ourselves.

There is some sadness and sense of ending at every graduation, and that mix of elation, joy, nostalgia, and mourning is part of our shared human experience of this day. Keynote Speaker and Honorary Doctorate Recipient Gustavo Dudamel

Venezuelan musician, composer, and conductor Gustavo Dudamel is driven by the belief that music has the power to transform lives, to inspire, and to change the world. Currently serving as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Opéra National de Paris, and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, Dudamel is widely recognized as one of the most decorated conductors of his generation, and through his dynamic presence on the podium and his tireless advocacy for arts education, he has introduced classical music to new audiences around the globe and has helped to provide access to the arts for countless people in underserved communities.

One of the few classical musicians to become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon, Dudamel’s film credits includes Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of Bernstein’s West Side Story, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mozart in the Jungle, Sesame Street, The Simpsons, and more. Dudamel also starred as the subject of a documentary on his life, ¡Viva Maestro!, which was released by Participant Media in April 2022. He has performed at the Super Bowl half-time show, the Academy Awards®, and the Nobel Prize Concert, and has worked with pop stars like Billie Eilish, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, and more. Among his many honors, he has received Spain’s Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award, a Chevalier of l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

His extensive, multiple-Grammy Award®-winning discography includes 65 releases, including recent Deutsche Grammophon LA Phil recordings of the Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, which won the Grammy® for Best Choral Performance, and the complete Charles Ives symphonies and Andrew Norman’s Sustain, which both won the Grammy Award® for Best Orchestral Performance. Inspired by his transformative experience as a youth in Venezuela’s immersive musical training program El Sistema, he created The Dudamel Foundation in 2012 with the goal to expand access to music and the arts by providing tools and opportunities for young people to shape their creative futures.

Presented by the Colburn School’s Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices, this four-part online series featuring James Conlon delves into the life and music of Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942).

Schulhoff ’s life and career are emblematic of the vitality not only of his own work, but that of two generations of composers whose lives, careers, and legacies were profoundly disrupted during— and following—the years 1933–1945 as a result of Nazi repression.
