Winter Honors Recital

Program Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 39

Simon Yao, Piano (age 12) Simon Yao is a seventh grader of Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School in Camarillo. He began playing piano at age six, initially studying with Richard Qiu. Simon has won various competitions including first prize and the Best Performance Award among all ages in the 2022 Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, gold medal in the 2023 Southern California Junior Bach Festival Complete Works Audition, and the Special Recognition Award in the 2023 Steinway Piano Competition. He has participated in master classes with Fabio Bidini, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Ory Shihor, Lang Lang, Boris Slutsky, and Alvin Chow. He made his solo orchestra debut at age 10 and gave his first solo concert at age nine. In March 2024, Simon will perform with the Glendale Youth Orchestra at the Alex Theatre as the winner of their annual concerto competition. Besides playing piano, Simon likes math and playing golf. Simon is a student of Jeff Lavner.

Dominic An, Violin (age 13) Henry Gronnier, Piano Dominic Hyunjin An studies at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. He began playing the violin at the age of eight. By age ten, Dominic had won second prize in the VOCE Competition’s state finals and became the youngest Concertmaster of the Temecula Youth Symphony. In December 2022, he was recognized as the youngest recipient of a scholarship from the Los Angeles Korean Musician Association, where he made his solo orchestral debut. He also won the Colburn Concerto Competition in May 2023, leading colburnschool.edu
