THE SHED

This new academic year brings with it a multitude of exciting opportunities beyond the curriculum. Cokethorpe pupils are continually encouraged to be more curious, courageous and resilient, to take risks, remain restless and search out opportunities for personal challenge and growth. The activities on offer in the AOB programme are designed to provide such possibilities.

The Shedule highlights a selection of wide-ranging events and public performances open to pupils and parents as participants and/or spectators. Embracing these opportunities not only enhances individual and team development but also helps pupils to generate some long lasting memories, make new friends and cultivate invaluable life skills. Those who take advantage of some of what Cokethorpe offers find their overall experience of School enriched, their personal statements supplemented and often uncover abilities they never knew they had.

Tickets for most, but not all, events and performances can be booked using the online form that is included in the relevant Letter Home.

If you have any special requirements such as wheelchair access please let us know when you book your tickets or contact us.

Please do not overbook for events as this can prevent others from claiming tickets. If you do find yourself with spare tickets please contact the Box Office as soon as possible as we may be able to resell or reallocate them.

For the benefit of our patrons and for child protection reasons we no longer allow the taking of photographs or the use of video equipment by audience members at the majority of our events. Official photographs and video recordings may be available – please contact us for details.

This is a wonderful chance to see and listen to the huge variety and quality that our Music Award Holders here at Cokethorpe School offer. Set in the beautiful Corinthian Room this is a fantastic event to start the new academic year.

OCTOBER 2017 LAMDA Showcase | 4.15pm - 5.00pm

Students taking London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts examinations present some of their work in an afternoon of solo, duo and ensemble performances.

OCTOBER 2017 INTER-HOUSE Singing I Afternoon

This promises to be a hotly fought afternoon as Houses battle it out against one another. There will be a whole House song and a vocal ensemble from each House.

OCTOBER 2017 CPA MURDER MYSTERY I 7.00PM - 11.00PM

Organised by the Cokethorpe Parents’ Association and the Drama Department and featuring a cast of teachers this is a fantastic night of fun, great food, drinks and wonderful company with a hilarious and thrilling mystery to solve.

OCTOBER 2017 Junior School choir concert I 4.15PM - 4.45PM

The Junior School Chamber Choir will perform an entertaining selection of songs for parents and grandparents in the Corinthian Room. The lively programme will brighten even the most grey of October days.

OCTOBER 2017 gcse drama performance I 6.30PM - 8.30PM

Fifth Form GCSE Drama candidates will perform their devised pieces of original theatre to a live audience as part of their examinations.

Please join us to celebrate Evensong in the intimate and tranquil setting of the School’s historic Chapel. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the beautiful singing of the School Choir performing traditional choral works for Evensong.

An independent student presentation of dramatic works.

NOVEMBER 2017 Afternoon MUSIC RECITAL I 4.15PM - 5.00PM

The Music Recitals are a great opportunity for those learning to play musical instruments to gain experience of performing in front of an audience. These informal performances are an uplifting way to end the day.

NOVEMBER 2017 ST CECILIA CONCERT I 7.00PM - 8.15PM

In celebration of the Patron Saint of Music, this event is a showcase of solo and ensemble music. Performances are from our Music Award Holders and other bright musical talents.

NOVEMBER 2017 DRAMA AWARD HOLDERS PERFORMANCE I 4.15PM - 5.00PM

This year’s Drama Award Holders from the Fourth Form to the Upper Sixth present a variety of monologues, duologues and short sketches in The Shed. Pupils will demonstrate their performance skills through a variety of characters and different genres.

NOVEMBER 2017 FIRST FORM MIME PRESENTATION I 4.15PM - 5.00PM

First Form pupils present their own devised pieces of drama using the theatrical technique of mime. Creative stories are brought to life through movement and facial expressions with the added challenge of removing all dialogue.

JUNIOR SCHOOL michaelmas performance I 5.30PM - 7.00pm

The children from Years 3 to Year 6 will be pleased to entertain you with a seasonal performance for family and friends. Please join us in the Dining Hall afterwards for mulled wine and refreshments.

DECEMBER 2017 ADVENT SERVICE I 6.30PM - 7.30PM

Pupils from across the whole School gather with their families to mark the end of term with festivities including traditional carols, prayers, readings and festive music. The celebrations will take place in the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Witney.

DECEMBER 2017 PRE-PREP NATIVITY I 9.30AM - 10.00AM & 2.30PM - 3.00PM

The Pre-Prep children give a festive, musical performance of the Christmas Nativity in the Corinthian Room. This is a lovely opportunity for the younger chilldren in the Junior School to recount the traditional Christmas story.

DECEMBER 2017 junior school christingle I 3.15pm - 3.45pm

A traditional service in the setting of the School Chapel sees all Junior School children celebrate Christingle with music and readings. Carols are sung by candlelight as the children line the aisle holding the Christingles they made in class.

This is an internal event for Junior School children and staff.

11-12 DECEMBER 2017

CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION I 7.00PM

This Senior School presents their adaptation of Dickens’ classic 19th century novel Oliver Twist. The novel reflects the social ills of the time as we follow orphaned Oliver from his humble beginnings in the workhouse to his life of crime and beyond.

Tickets must be booked in advance through the box office.

This year’s Drama Award Holders from the First, Second and Third Form demonstrate their performance skills through a variety of characters and different genres.

JANUARY 2018 AFTERNOON music recital I 4.15PM - 5.00PM

The second in the series of termly recitals is an ideal opportunity for those having music lessons in and outside of School to gain performance experience. The recital offers a range of instrumental and vocal performances.

FEBRUARY 2018 young musician of the year competition final I 7.00PM - 9.00PM

Now in its third year, the Music Department presents Cokethorpe Young Musician of the Year. Instrumentalists, vocalists and musicians will have performed in a series of heats, competing for a place in the prestigious finalists’ concert.

An independent student performance of dramatic work, by invitation only.

FEBRUARY 2018 GCSE Music recital I 7.00PM - 8.15PM

GCSE pupils perform for their practical examination in the formal setting of a concert. This is an integral part of the GCSE course and gives pupils the opportunity to perform as both soloists and as part of an ensemble.

5-9 MARCH 2018

junior school arts week

The Junior School spends a week celebrating the Arts, with music, poetry, art, dance, competitions and workshops. Linked to the National Gallery’s Take One Picture, it is truly a celebration of the Arts. A full programme of events is publicised nearer the time.

6-9 MARCH 2018

Inter-house Drama Week

Each House will present an ensemble piece and a monologue to a live audience and visiting judge in The Shed. The final will take place during Headmaster’s Assembly.

MARCH 2018 second form physical theatre I 4.15PM - 5.00PM

The entire Second Form will be performing a series of short and dramatic pieces demonstrating their talents in Physical Theatre. These presentations reflect their skills in teamwork and creative imaginations.

21-23 MARCH 2018

Grease I 7.30PM - 9.30PM

The Music Department present Grease! – the original high-school musical, featuring all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and many more.

Auditions start in the Michaelmas Term so dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again.

As part of their GCSE course Fifth Form drama candidates present their performance text pieces to a live audience and visiting examiner.

As the days lengthen and summer is in the air, come and revel in a cornucopia of instrumental delights from the Cokethorpe Music Department. We hope you can join us for this Summer Concert which features both solo instrumentalists and ensembles.

A celebration of May Day, sung from the balcony of the Mansion by the finest voices of the School. The whole School assembles and is given the opportunity to share in this ancient festivity by listening to the singing of Madrigals.

03 MAY 2018

choral society concert I 7.30PM - 9.00PM

The Director of Music leads a choir made up of the School Choir and the Cokethorpe School Choral Society, comprised of parents and staff. All are welcome from beginners to more experienced singers - come along and give it a try!

JUNE 2018 THEATRE IN EDUCATION I tbc

Third Form pupils present a variety of short extracts from their devised Theatre in Education work for the Junior School. In small groups pupils will explore, research and produce original theatrical presentations in response to a number of different educational topics for a young audience.

A fantastic opportunity to hear some of the work from our singers over the past year. From Baroque to Broadway, our singers show off their voices in this end of year spectacular.

Second Form pupils present their final public performance of the term involving every pupil in the year. Previous productions have included such classics as Doctor Faustus, The Canterbury Tales, and Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

All First Form pupils participate in their final public performance of the term. Previous productions have included Pride and Prejudice, Hamlet and King Lear.

art and DT exhibition I 5.00PM - 7.00PM

The Art and Design, Textiles and Design Technology Exhibition showcases GCSE and A Level work from the pupils along with that of the Art and DT Award Holders. It highlights the variety of creative talent at Cokethorpe and offers an enjoyable opportunity to view this outstanding selection of work.

As part of Prize Giving, the Junior School present a wonderful Summer Production to parents and staff. With all children participating, it is the perfect end to the school year.

JULY 2018 senior school prize giving I 11.30aM - 3.00PM

As part of the Senior School Prize Giving, the Drama Department present an end of year play featuring pupils past and present, as well as Drama staff. Previous productions have included Twelfth Night A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing.
