Mr Stevens Deputy Headmaster At the end of 2019 you could not turn a newspaper page, put on the television or look at any form of social media without some reference to 2020 and the clarity of vision that this year would provide. ‘2020’ and ‘vision’ were rarely separated and yet now, just a few short months into the year and it is clear our vision was completely obscured. None of us knew or foresaw the havoc that would be wreaked upon our society by the coronavirus pandemic.

For you, and your cohort, this has been unprecedented and if I told you before Christmas that you would not be sitting A Level examinations this summer then you would have laughed at me. I am sorry that your school life has ended with a whimper rather than a bang but remember that the friends and connections that you have made at Cokethorpe can be there for life and I urge you to keep in touch with your school over the coming months and years.

We look forward to hearing of your progress.

Mr Gale Head of Sixth Form I have often found myself over the course of my teaching career talking to my students and telling them to plan for the worst case scenario – ‘be prepared’, ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ - never really believing that it would happen. But guess what? This year it did. You are the COVID cohort. What strange times we live in and it would forgivable to let recent events cloud our memories of your time at Sixth Form but we must remember that whilst the past few months have been difficult there was a time before the pandemic.

I remember hilarious singing and some suspect fancy dress at the Christmas parties, fun times throughout charity week last summer and wonderful conversations and pleasant company at formal dinners. As a year group you have always made the Common Room a vibrant and friendly place, where everyone was welcome. Sixth Form should be about finding yourself and growing up, taking on new opportunities and building new skills. Comparing the fresh faced, post GCSE students who walked into the Common Room nearly two years ago to who you now are is almost like comparing chalk and cheese. You have all become adults and you should be rightly proud of who you are. I know I and my colleagues are. Miss Woodcock Deputy Head of Sixth Form Drawing a close to your secondary education can be dauting and starting something new is scary which will require you all to be resilient and confident. However, it is important that these feelings are also partnered with curiosity and excitement. Starting a new chapter is a chance to determine your future and for you all I would encourage you to embrace every opportunity and thoroughly throw yourselves into every aspect of the path you choose to fully appreciate the adventure you are all about to embark on.

Whether you are moving onto further education at university, jetting off on a gap year or starting the world of work, remember you Sixth Form experiences with joy that have added to you all. It has been a pleasure to work you all over the past year and I have been honoured to be involved in your last year at Cokethorpe. The difficulties are certainly worth it, and you should be extremely proud of the people you have all turned into. I wish you well, luck and remember, you will always be a part of the Cokethorpe community, and I look forward to hearing about all your achievements in next few years. Good Luck and have fun! Certainly the Christmas meal was a highlight for me.

Mr Walwyn Deputy Head of Sixth Form Many years into the future you will dust off this Leavers’ Yearbook, to reminisce and to smile at the faces, comments and shared memories. When you do so, I guarantee that you will be struck by the vivacity and hilarity of your friends and peers. As a (former) Housemaster, we are not allowed to have favourites, that would be highly unprofessional. However since we have collectively moved on, I can reveal that your cohort was always considered to be something special. You are a part of a remarkable year group, one which has had to live through extraordinary times and, despite losing out on what traditionally marks the end of a long and exciting education, you can still reflect on what you have achieved and shared together.

You will still have the shared experience of walking the Cokethorpe path; of enjoying an excellent education, an array of fantastic activities and of making lifelong friends. You have achieved greatness in the classroom, on the sports field, in public performances of one kind or another, and in the adversity which a demanding education exacts. You have grown in confidence, resilience and skills, and now are set to march out into the wider world, well equipped for the many challenges which lie before you.

How you face and overcome these trials is illustrative of the person that you wish to become. If I may offer some small words of advice: in all matters, I exhort you to be brave, to be positive and to be kind.

Keep these three qualities at the forefront of your thoughts and actions and you shall find success, on whichever path of life’s ambages you find yourself.

Having to do a Psychology presentation in front of a guest only for my PowerPoint to fail last minute and instead of calmly continuing I started monologuing about how embarrassed I was and had to get help from my friend who clearly knew more about the ‘change and continuity of women’s roles through the ages’ than me (someone that spent months researching).

Mrs Miller because she teaches with enthusiasm and tries to inspire us every lesson (she also sometimes brings chocolate to the lessons).

Mrs Miller. She never gave up on teaching me, made sure I always did my best, always comforted and supported me. She is an amazing teacher and she got me from bottom English to top English and was one of the main reasons I did it for A level.

Mr Lapwood for providing a stimulating and (let’s say unique) yet independent approach to learning! Mr Lapwood always provided great support to me within the school, with me being new to Cokethorpe.

Mrs Rogers was committed to teaching and was always willing to give up time for any one-to-one help or any support that we needed.

Pretty much all of it. Trips to Littlehampton, Snowdonia, Madagascar, London, and numerous individual car journeys almost glued to the seat with exhaustion. The satisfaction of getting a maths question correct, finally completing an essay or my NEA and understanding just a bit better something that I was previously struggling to grasp. Being let loose to complete Cpacs and writing up pages after stirring, shaking and measuring in the labs. Early morning competitions, runs and practices in all weather. When needed, staying late and arriving early and just enjoying - for the most part - the freedom and the school, five days a week (sometimes more) for what I remember to be a very long and happy time.

One of my favourite moments in Sixth Form was when I took over the ‘News of the Week AOB programme’ from Mrs Gregory-Newman and was tasked with presenting to a group of 14 students without assistance. This allowed to me to run my own class and decide how I wanted to present the most important current affairs.

Most embarrassing moment of Sixth Form

One evening I had a driving lesson and I put my phone on silent and left it on the backseat of my instructors car.

What I didn’t realise though was that I forgot to tell my sister that I wouldn’t be on the school bus that evening. 50 missed calls and angry texts later, I get home after my lesson only to find out that I had brought the whole school transport system to a standstill because everyone was looking for me. Whoops. Next day, I had a very embarrassing conversation with Mr White about what happened that evening. Sorry to everyone who was late home that night!

Favourite teacher and why?

I have been fortunate to have some great teachers in my Sixth Form. However if I had to single one person out, it would be Mr Biggs because he has helped significantly in building my confidence and level of knowledge about Business. Business has always been one of my favourite subjects at school and it is what I am hoping to study at University. I admire Mr Biggs passion for Business that he brings to the classroom and his enthusiasm for debate about global business. I will always remember him as a great influence in my school life.

Most important lesson you have learnt

The most important lesson I have learnt during my time at Sixth Form is how influential Sixth Formers are to the rest of the lower years. Being a role model, maintaining high standards, being confident in how you present yourself and how others perceive you will hopefully help younger students.

Producing, writing and playing with some of the biggest acts of all time, releasing albums of my own and travelling whilst touring sell-out shows, (I don’t want to have lived in one place for more than a year) and hopefully would have played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury at least once.

I got caught getting lunch twice by one of the lunch ladies.

Mrs Kenworthy. She always had an open ear for anything even if its not school/physics related. Really funny and overall tried making her way of teaching fun and enjoyable which therefore I looked forward to every lesson with her as I knew it would be a good/productive hour. Always took time out of her lunch/day to help you and go over struggles you might have. I wish she could be my physics university teacher.

Most important lesson you have learnt

No matter what you do, where you come from or how you look, you can’t please everyone. You will never be perfect and liked by everybody. (I won’t cut my hair or change my nationality...sorry, not sorry).

Where will you be in 10 years time?

Working a job that I enjoy after graduating with a degree. Also hopefully having a roof over my head and that I will be financially stable (treat myself and not have to worry if I can afford that shoe or piece of clothing). I also want to be able to give back to my parents.
