ABOUT THE ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Fund is an appeal made each year to every member of the Cokethorpe School community, including parents, staff, Old Cokethorpeans and friends of the School.

The aim of this initiative is to help support a selection of worthwhile and achievable projects that can be realised within a year, and will provide the funds for immediate, tangible benefits. They are designed to enhance, enrich and broaden the educational development and experience of school for all our pupils.

Through the Annual Fund pupils are provided with the opportunity to discover new skills and activities.

Each year, staff submit proposals for the Annual Fund and whilst it is not possible to cover all requests for funding, the broad selection of projects put forward reflects the importance and worth of this initiative. The projects are chosen based on the criteria that they will provide exceptional added value and could not be funded from existing departmental budgets.

ANNUAL FUND PROJECTS 2019 PRE-PREP MUSIC GARDEN We would like to thank the Annual Fund for its ongoing support of the Playground for our youngest pupils. This year, Miss Oliff has worked with Tom Alford, who is designing a musical garden as part of his A Level DT project. He has researched outdoor learning and the benefits of this as part of his coursework. Our talented Maintenance Team will now use his prototype to build the garden and we hope to be able to share pictures of children enjoying the garden in the next bulletin.

POLYTUNNEL We very much appreciate the Annual Fund’s support for our new kitchen garden polytunnel. This has allowed us to keep gardening even in the bitter cold and rain as it protects the growing plants from the elements. This has subsequently enabled us to grow tender plants, such as tomatoes and lemongrass, as well as germinating seeds.

It has also allowed us to grow a crop of strawberries, providing the first fruit of the growing season.

JUNIOR SCHOOL READING ROOM Junior School pupils are most grateful to the Annual Fund for supporting their new reading room. A magical and mysterious place to enjoy stories, reading and research, it is also a relaxing space in which to spend a quiet break time enjoying a game of chess, or curl up on a beanbag with a good book. Considerably bigger than our previous library, the Annual Fund has helped to us restock with the latest fiction and non-fiction titles, requested by the Junior School pupils.

JUNIOR SCHOOL TREE HOUSE

Junior School pupils already make use of the woods at Cokethorpe for their learning and play, but we would like to enahnce this provision to allow them to better develop their exploring, climbing, imaginative play and risk-taking in an exciting new environment. The tree house could also be used as an outdoor classroom to support environmental studies.

JUNIOR SCHOOL TRIM TRAIL

Trim trails provide children with a variety of physical challenges to develop balance, climbing confidence, upper and lower body strength, core stability, coordination and gross motor skills. The exciting trim trail combinations create group challenges that encourage co-operation, competition and imaginative play. Through the Junior School Council, pupils will design their own trail through the woods.

DRAMA S TA G E - I N - A - B O X

Stage-in-a-box is a portable box which transforms into a stage or performance area. It contains over 60 model pieces that include replicas such as rostra blocks, ramps, steps, flats and actors. It also contains a working lighting rig.

This would provide a visual, working model for pupils who struggle with visualising designs (a compulsory part of the new GCSE/A Level specifications) and be of benefit for all pupils when considering their designs for set texts. It would not only benefit all those studying GCSE and A Level Drama, but also pupils who are learning about the technical aspects of theatre in AOBs. This would also help to provide a tangible vision for staff and pupils involved in the school’s extra-curricular productions.

SCIENCE M E LT I N G P O I N T A P PA R AT U S The apparatus is used for determining the melting point of a solid and hence its identity or purity. The apparatus would be used for the Corinthian Partnership to use in junior schools, in science clubs to demonstrate its use and also in the A Level specification. It is also excellent preparation for those going on to degree level Chemistry, who will be required to have a good knowledge of such apparatus.

Not all schools have such kit (most use a very simple and crude method for melting point determination, which we currently do) and as such it could help us stand out to prospective Sixth Form entry candidates in the subject.

W AY S O F G I V I N G T O T H E ANNUAL FUND All donations to the Annual Fund are put to good use immediately, so the impact of your gift will be felt by current as well as future generations of pupils. Participation is the key, not the level of generosity. Quite simply, every gift helps.

Single Gifts: If you would prefer to give a one-off gift, you can do so by cheque, CAF cheque, online or by bank transfer.

Bequests: Including a legacy to the School in your Will is a means of giving lasting support in a way that may not be possible during your lifetime.

Gift Aid: However you choose to make your gift, remember that Cokethorpe is a registered charity and if you are a UK taxpayer, you can increase the value of your gift by 25% under the Gift Aid scheme at no extra cost to you. Simply complete the donation form and Gift Aid declaration.
