ANNUAL FUND 2018 REVIEW & 2019 LAUNCH
ABOUT THE ANNUAL FUND
The Annual Fund is an appeal made each year to every member of the Cokethorpe community, including parents, staff, Old Cokethorpeans and friends of the School. The aim of this initiative is to help support a selection of worthwhile and achievable projects that can be realised within a year, and will provide the funds for immediate, tangible benefits. They are designed to enhance, enrich and broaden the educational development and experience of school for all our pupils. Through the Annual Fund pupils are provided with the opportunity to discover new skills and activities. Each year, staff submit proposals for the Annual Fund and whilst it is not possible to cover all requests for funding, the broad selection of projects put forward reflects the importance and worth of this initiative. The projects are chosen based on the criteria that they will provide exceptional added value and should not be funded from existing departmental budgets.
New for 2019 This year, we would like to ask you to consider Regular Giving as a way of supporting the Annual Fund. Even as little as ÂŁ3 a month would go a long way to helping purchase projects of benefit to the School. Details on how to donate can be found on the Donation Form.
We are delighted to report that the Annual Fund 2018

STEM Roadshow Many thanks to the Annual Fund for enabling every pupil in the Junior School to have the chance to take part in a workshop titled The
ANNUAL FUND 2018 PROJECTS
Coding Box. The workshop combined the concept of escape rooms with a focus on coding skills. This involved linking together a series of clues that enable pupils to crack codes on a series of locks. The locks must be solved in sequence as the clock ticks down. Pupils had to ‘escape’ before the clock reaches zero, by cracking the code of the final lock. Miss Fagan
Vocal Workshop The Music Department are once again extremely grateful to the Annual Fund which enabled us to programme a vocal workshop based on the story of Danaus, the mythical king, who meets Danaus, butterfly genus. Pupils had the opportunity to sing alongside professional musicians in this musical exploration of murdered males and the intersections of science, poetry and performance.

Regeneration of Eco-Habitat Cokethorpe School is extremely grateful to the Annual Fund for providing the opportunity to redevelop the pond on the

grounds to encourage wildlife to florish. Work is already underway to clear and reline the existing structure, with plans to bed-in the plants next spring. A set of benches will allow students and pupils to spend time in the new Eco-Habitat, observing the plants and wildlife insitu. Mr Hole
Adventure Igloo We were very pleased to take delivery of the garden igloo just before the end of the Summer Term. It is a wonderful all weather, geodesic dome that provides a lovely, calm space for the Pre-Prep children to enjoy looking at books or having a group story time in our outdoor Play Area. The children have also enjoyed the comfortable cushions and blankets provided, and have taken the opportunity for some time out during playtimes to sit and talk to each other inside. We were unsure what to call ‘The Pod’, ‘The Dome’ ‘The Igloo’ but have heard many of the children referring to it as ‘The Bubble’ and therefore it has been renamed! Miss Oliff
Tree Plaque Names - £400 As the English Department spend some time in the grounds looking at trees to inspire poems, they would find it invaluable to have tree name

plaques with their details on, including the latin name, age and any other pertinant details. This would also be of use for other disiplines within the School, including the Biology Department and Junior School. Cokethorpe is hoping to fund plaques for ten trees around the School grounds.
Music Garden - £1,000 The Pre-Prep team would like to build a music garden to enhance their outdoor learning provision and complement the indoor music programme. Music has long been acknowledged to help young children develop their language and reasoning skills, as well as coordination and pattern recognition. They will additionally benefit from further activies for them to do outdoors.
Storybus Workshop - £1,500 Pupils across the whole of the Junior School would take part in this creative and immersive workshop for curriculum enrichment. The pupils would visit the Storybus in small groups, where they will experience literacy activites and discover what stories can be. Reading helps increase a child’s vocabulary as well as encouraging their young imaginations.
The Trench - £900 The History Department plan to commemorate the First World War Armistice by creating a semipermanent installation that will enable pupils to

experience an iconic aspect of World War I first hand. ‘The Trench’ will be an accurate recreation of a British trench section on the Western Front from late 1914 to November 1918. The installation will be approximately 25 metres in length and will be built to accurate dimension in every other respect. The trench will be reinforced with metal sheeting and timber, and will be designed to meet modern construction and health and safety regulations. The estimated costs for construction include the purchase and hire of equipment, and parts.
Tubular Bells - £5,500 The Music Department wish to purchase a set of tubular bells in order to enhance the curriculum and continue to expand the percussion section in the Senior School Orchestra. They would give all students a chance to play a musical instrument that they would otherwise not be able to try out. They are possibly most well-known due to the hit album by Mike Oldfield but also featured in many classical music works, including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Holst’s The Planets.
Low Ropes Course - £8,000 The School would like to design and construct a low ropes course to facilitate and enhance leadership skills training and education for pupils and students. The course would be designed for use for our youngest pupils through to the Sixth Form, including adults. Therefore, the facility could also be used for staff training and development. The estimated cost includes training in management and safety for two members of staff to organise and supervise appropriate use of the course.
