Renovating a house can be an exciting and rewarding experience. But the act of renovation can often leave the house in a state of disarray, causing stress and frustration. In the same way, God wants to renovate your life by altering the ‘old you’ and creating a ‘new you’ with an improved heart. It’s not going to be easy, and your life might experience some disarray, but renovating with God is the opportunity of a lifetime.

Grab your tool belt for physical renovation. For spiritual renovation, turn to God. Popular author and pastor Jacob Armstrong explores how Nehemiah understood the difference. Nehemiah’s goal was to rebuild the wall and gates of Jerusalem, a physically daunting undertaking. But he also knew that as the Jewish people returned to their homeland, they would need spiritual renovation—an equally difficult mission. Thankfully, spiritual renovation is not a do-it-yourself project, and Renovate, part of Armstrong’s The Connected Life series, emphasizes how we need God’s great power in us to renovateguide our lives through the Holy Spirit. ash

Thistional handy and helpful guide fl preview describes how churches can set up, maintain, and nurture small groups to create a congregation that is welcoming and outwardlooking. Hand-me downs are usually thought of as “second-rate,” but Jim and Jennifer Cowart’s Hand Me Downs offers a six-session small group study showing us that our heritage—what we leave behind—is central to who we are as Christians. A follow-up to the Living the Five principles, this community group resource helps you replace self-destructive, addictive behaviors with new, healthy habits so that your legacy is one of spiritual and mental integrity. In addition to the book, a companion DVD is offered in affordable 10-packs to make it easy for your church to multiply community groups.

During their years of worshiping on the move in a rented theatre, Harvest Church learned about adaptive systems, digital multimedia tools, flexible overhead, mobility, and sustained rapid growth. This book expands on their journey, and their flourishing community groups model.

The six sessions offered in the study are: Session One: Leaving a Legacy Session Two: Modeling Holy Habits Session Three: Breaking Bad Cycles Session Four: Living with Integrity Session Five: Playing Well With Others Session Six: Doing God’s Will Abingdon Press. This six-session study for community groups (and small groups of any kind) is based on the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus used to teach all disciples about how to communicate with God. It expands on the Living the Five principles that (1) You can’t do life alone, and that (5) Worship is a lifestyle. Christians order their lives in relationships that are strengthened through personal and corporate prayer with God. The Lord’s Prayer is a template for how to bring our needs, concerns, and challenges to God who cares for all of us.

Grounded in Prayer consists of a Participant/ Leader Book and DVD with 6 video sessions. The six sessions are: Your Holy Name; Our God’s Reign; Everything We Need; Forgive Us!; Deliver Us!; For God’s Glory. Abingdon Press. Coming in July.

This offering to community groups (and small groups of any kind) is based on the Apostles’ Creed, which has served the church for nearly 1500 years as a basic summary statement about core Christian beliefs. This participant experience expands on the principle that “Growing People Change” their hearts and lives (a changed heart and life is the meaning of the New Testament concept metanoia, which in Elizabethan English is translated as “repentance”). This growth is accomplished by (1) understanding what changes in belief come through turning away from the practices that separate us from God and (2) reflecting about our relationship to God while learning how to think theologically. author insights

The phrase ‘holding up your corner’ is derived from a biblical story (Mark 2:1–5) about four people who take action in order to help another person—literally delivering that person to Christ. For us, ‘holding up your corner’ has meaning in two aspects of our lives today: First, it refers to our physical and social locations, the places where we live and work...the places where our assumptions, attitudes, and beliefs have influence on the people around us. When we feel empowered to speak out about the injustice or inequity in our community, we are holding up our corner. Second, the phrase refers to our actions, the ways we step up to meet a particular problem of injustice or inequity, and proactively do something about it. When we put ourselves—literally— next to persons who are suffering, and enter into their situation in order to bring hope and healing to the person and the situation, we are holding up our corner.

But God is greater than those needs, and he works through his people to accomplish healing and transformation. God calls us to integral mission, obeying both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment in ministering to people’s spiritual, physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. This 10-session study from World Relief is designed to mobilize the church to engage the great causes of our day, stand with the vulnerable, and meet the needs of our neighbors as Jesus did. Some of the most important stories of spiritual maturity in Scripture happen due to the failures (not the successes) of those we consider closest to God—one only has to mention Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul... the list goes on and...as examples of the best of our faith whose lives were significantly shaped and impacted because of their failures. While we do learn much from their successes, understanding the impact of their contribution to God’s Kingdom calls us to paint the entire picture, including the failures.

Leadership She Five Keys to Unlock the Power of Women in Ministry Karoline M. Lewis

5 S

E SS

IO N

S

Women who serve as clergy or in other church leadership roles experience ministry differently than men do. They offer remarkably powerful gifts, but their pathways are full of obstructions and thorny challenges. Compounding this problem is the fact that there often is an assumption that these issues have been solved; women are ordained, have been ‘granted’ their places, end of story. But in fact the issues have not been solved; they are just masked, disguised, or buried below the surface. She covers everything from biblical arguments for and against women in the church to what not to wear. With startling clarity, Lewis reveals the underpinnings of sexism and examines issues of identity, authority, sexuality, authenticity, embodiment, boundaries, and self-care. She guides the reader to develop a personal theology of leadership.

In addition to the Participant Book, this flexible, five-session group experience for clergy, staff and laity, women and men, includes a DVD with brief segment starter videos featuring the author. The facilitator’s guide is included on the DVD and available for download online. The study can be organized over a period of weeks, or can be completed as a one- or two-day retreat. kit

Get Their Name Grow Your Church by Building New Relationships Bob Farr and Kay Kotan

For women in ministry, one ‘a-ha’ moment after another spills from the pages of this book. Decades after ordination opened for women in mainline churches, the struggle for acceptance and equality goes on. This is an important book which narrates the deep costs of sexism and imagines a new form of women’s leadership rooted and grounded in authentic love and genuine hospitality. In telling the truth about persistent sexism in the church, Karoline Lewis, paradoxically, blesses her readers with hope. This hope emerges in naming the challenges for women leaders and then pointing the way forward. —Leanne Van Dyk, President and Professor of Theology, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA

Anxious for Nothing Finding Calm in a Chaotic World Max Lucado

5 E SS

S

With His help you will learn to face the calamities of life. You’ll learn how to talk yourself off the ledge. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will learn to view bad news through the lens of sovereignty; to discern the lies of Satan and tell yourself the truth. You will manifest a gentleness that is evident to others. Anxiety comes with life. But it doesn’t have to dominate your life.

NEW

IO N

S

Anxiety is at an all-time high—the news about our anxiety is enough to make us anxious—but there’s a prescription for dealing with it. Max Lucado invites readers into a 6-session study of Philippians 4, and the most highlighted passage of any book on the planet, according to Amazon. The Apostle Paul admonishes the followers of Christ, “Do not be anxious about anything....” Paul seems to leave little leeway here. “Be anxious for nothing.” Nada. Zilch. Zero.

What’s he suggesting? That we should literally be anxious for absolutely nothing? Lucado says, “The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is optional. Often we go through situations where the challenge seems greater than our strength. During such times, we can find hope and inspiration from the story of Joshua. As God called him to take over from Moses and lead the Israelites into a paradigm shift from wilderness-wandering to promise-believing, the people had to change their mindsets. The same is true for us today. Our best days our are still ahead of us. We only need to grasp that truth and live in faith to realize this promise. In this inspiring call to something greater, Batterson helps men understand what it means to be a man of God by unveiling seven virtues of manhood. He shares inspiring stories, including the true story of the hero and martyr Polycarp, who first heard the voice from heaven say, “Play the man.” He couples those stories with practical ideas about how to disciple the next generation of men. This is more than a book; it’s a movement of men who will settle for nothing less than fulfilling their highest calling to be the man and the father God has destined them to be. Play the man. Make the man.

This revolutionary book on heaven is built on a very simple idea: heaven is not the eternal church service in the sky. Jesus referred to the next chapter of our story as “the renewal of all things” (Matthew 19:28). Meaning, literally, the renewal of the earth we love in all its beauty, the renewal of our own being, and all those things which make for a rich life—music, art, food, laughter, all that we hold dear—shall be renewed. Heaven is not a life in the clouds; it is not unending worship singing. Rather, the life we long for, the paradise Adam and Eve knew, is precisely the life that is coming to us. And coming soon. We all know the feeling. We take a leap, only to land flat on our face. Just when our plan appears to be perfect, it falls apart. Life’s failures and disappointments can make it difficult to move forward; how do we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off? Author and pastor Matt Miofsky examines the life of Jeremiah, whose failed pursuits are described in more detail and depth than with any other prophet. Even though God set him apart to speak to the nation of Israel, Jeremiah’s attempts to fulfill his calling were met with ridicule, punishment, and suffering. They ride in the front seats of expensive cars and drive headlong into a brick wall. And then they do it again. And again. They’re crash test dummies. Why do they keep doing the same dumb thing over and over again? Or maybe a better question is, why do we? In this study on the Book of Judges, author Talbot Davis explores the stories of the judges from the perspective of the Israelite’ repeated failure to be faithful to God alone. Through his creative, quirky angle on the book, Davis highlights how the Israelites in Judges made the same mistake of apostasy over and over again. Each time God delivered them, they eventually fell back into the predictable, tragic pattern.

The good news is that the God who created you wants your life to make a difference even more than you do! The voice within us that challenges us to make a difference is none other than the voice of God.

Every day we see that things are not right in our world, and as followers of Jesus Christ, we have an impulse to do something about it. We long to connect our passions and gifts with the world’s great needs, making a unique contribution for the healing of the world.

James A. Harnish helps United Methodists answer the questions “How can I contribute to God’s healing work in this world?”; and “How can I find my place to serve and make a difference?” Drawing upon biblical wisdom and real stories of real people who have found their place to serve, he provides practical guidance to help every disciple make a difference as a participant in God’s transformation of the world. This six-week study is perfect for anyone desiring to engage service or mission as a vital part of discipleship, find a place to serve, and engage in God’s work in the world. Abingdon Press. Even little children can be heard reciting The Lord’s Prayer during a service—most Christians know it by heart. But the New Testament gives us additional examples of Jesus’ prayers. By studying them, we can learn how they inform and engage his intentions of how the gospel would change lives and affect the world, both in the first century and for every century to follow.

In The Great Spiritual Migration, Brian McLaren argues that in order to survive, Christianity must shift away from an outdated system of beliefs to a way of life based on love. He outlines three migrations: spiritually (less focus on doctrine and more on the abiding life of love made manifest in Jesus); theologically (a new way of reading Scripture that’s more literary, less literalism); and missionally (“organizing religion” rather than organized religion). The Way of Life study will help groups approach and engage these three proposals. The participant guide introduces the main text and can also stand alone with additional commentary and questions. It also contains new content from Brian McLaren, including personal devotionals written to accompany each section.

When it comes to women and work, there is often an “us-versus-them” mentality, dividing women according to the choices they make. Yet all women have a shared calling to work in a way that glorifies God—whether it be in the office, home, ministry, or beyond.

As women, we often are overwhelmed by the demands and circumstances of life. This sixweek Bible study explores the life of Mary, Jesus’ mother—from the news that she would give birth to God’s Son to the day she witnessed his tragic death on the cross. You’ll journey from overwhelming joy to overwhelming sorrow and back again, learning how to be consumed with the mission of God rather than the “mission of me.” Abingdon Press.

In this study of the Book of Numbers, we’ll find a group of people that wandered in the desert for forty years, unable to enter the Promised Land because of their complaining, grumbling, and lack of faith. By exploring Numbers we can come to identify the reasons for our complaining, learn contentment while being authentic about the difficulties of life, accept short-term hardship in light of the greater good of God’s ultimate deliverance, recognize the relationship between complaining and worry, and discover how to realign with God’s character and promises. With more and more ways to communicate in a culture that encourages sharing the details of our lives, there exists greater and greater opportunity for disagreement. Set Apart Holy Habits of Prophets and Kings Jessica LaGrone

Namesake When God Rewrites Your Story Jessica LaGrone

S

Jesus demonstrated the presence and power of God by performing miracles. He turned water into wine, healed the sick, calmed the storm, opened blind eyes, and raised the dead. While these beloved stories draw our attention to divine power, they also have something else in common: human desperation. Every time we see Jesus performing a miracle, we also get a glimpse into the gift of desperation, a gift that opens us to the dramatic power of God through our desperate need for him.

You’re not unlike some of the kings and prophets in 1 and 2 Kings. Although they were set apart by God, they didn’t have all the answers. They struggled. They made big time mistakes. But they grew in their faith through spiritual practices even while carrying out God’s calling on earth.

None of us want marriages where we grit our teeth and just tolerate each other....where our spouses really don’t like us, much less respect us. We want to be married to someone we cherish and who cherishes us.

There are countless marriages consisting of two people just going through the motions. But Gary Thomas says there are real ways this pattern can be reversed: when husbands and wives learn to cherish one another in proven, loving, and everyday actions and words. Through personal stories and real-world examples, Thomas proves what husbands and wives can begin doing today to turn their marriage around, even a marriage marred by neglect and disrespect. So how do you cherish your spouse? Thomas will show you how going out of your way to notice them, appreciate them, honor them, encourage them, and hold them close to your heart will bring hope, light, and life into your marriage. We grown-ups sometimes forget how much childhood matters. It’s filled with the sacred and is not to be missed when it comes around again during parenthood. And parenthood is the time of spirit formation in which we don’t realize until later that everything kid-drenched around us was and is a gift.

Our possessions can create unbearable weight and affect our ability to serve and thrive. How do we defy gravity and find freedom? In this four-week small-group study and stewardship campaign, pastor and author Tom Berlin explores what is required to sustain a vibrant life, what we need versus what we want, and what we can do to avoid being pulled into the orbit of materialism. Abingdon Press. Book 9781501813405

The E-Giving Guide for Every Church Using Digital Tools to Grow Ministry Richard Rogers; foreword by J. Clif Christopher

Rosario Picardo knows what it’s like to be a pastor with few resources and feel the stress of managing “business” matters like finances, debt reduction, fundraising, and building maintenance. He’s been there. Through trials and failures, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, Picardo learned new ways for reaching the least and lost and for growing disciples. He shares the lessons he’s learned with the confidence that other leaders can do the same. Abingdon Press.

Cash or check? How about neither? Why hasn’t the church embraced the idea of electronic giving and digital finance? The E-Giving Guide for Every Church takes away the confusion and fear involved in using electronic media to raise money for your ministry and mission by providing a solid, sustainable framework that focuses on the key topics every church must address... sooner rather than later. Help people understand and live by the transformative truths of the Bible. By spending just fifteen minutes a day, five days a week, reading key Bible chapters, readers will begin to understand the context and content of the Bible in a way that can open the whole Bible to them.

about the author

Deron Spoo is the pastor of First Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Over the past 16 years, Spoo has guided the church to become a regional church committed to urban ministry. Church members describe him as “authentic.” His television devotionals, First Things First, reach 100,000 people each week.

about the study

In September 2011, The House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church, while meeting in Province IX in Quito, Ecuador, issued a pastoral teaching that challenges the cChurch to face the urgency of the environmental crisis and to take bold and faithful action as an expression of our love for God and God’s creation.... The teaching we produced invites the Church to recognize the salvation of all creation as the work of Christ in the world. It presses us to recognize that because we are called to live in Christ and with Christ, we in turn seek to live ‘a life of grace for the whole world.’ —from the foreword

As science and politics engage in a never-ending battle over the environment, A Life of Grace for the Whole World re-claims the theology of salvation and redemption for all creation. Using as a guide the House of Bishops Pastoral Teaching on the Environment—the first statement on the environment from The Episcopal Church leadership—A Life of Grace engages participants in understanding how the call to care for Creation informs and deepens appreciation and love for God and God’s work in Creation, and how that finds expression in the faith life of individuals and churches. at Cokesbury.com/adamhamilton

Join Adam Hamilton as he travels from Egypt to Mt. Sinai, the Nile, the Red Sea, and the wilderness, exploring the sites of Moses’ life. Using historical information, archaeological data, and biblical text, Hamilton guides us in the footsteps of this reluctant prophet who grew in his relationship with God and by the end of life had successfully fulfilled the role he was given. Turn your own reluctance into boldness as you examine the significant challenges facing Moses and how God shaped his character and life in powerful ways.

For Christians, Moses’ life serves as the backdrop for much that is found in the Gospels. Throughout history, his story has continued to speak to each successive generation. —from the Introduction

insights into the study

By ‘means of grace’ I understand outward signs, words, or actions, ordained of God, and appointed for this end, to be the ordinary channels whereby he might convey to men, preventing, justifying, or sanctifying grace. —John Wesley, from The Sermons of John Wesley (Sermon 16: The Means of Grace)

This six-week, video-based study will help Christians (new and seasoned) to reorder their lives by recognizing and affirming the outward signs, words, and actions of an invisible, divine grace. Wesley confirmed the tendency in each of us for the love of God and others to grow cold, so that we drift away from the gift of God’s unmerited grace. So Wesley showed us ways to reorder our lives through the “means of grace.” These means are the ordinary channels that God uses to draw us into a fruitful relationship: Prayer, Searching Scripture, Receiving the Lord’s Supper, Fasting, and Conferencing (worship together). Through these “means” we receive God’s gifts together, and we experience the power of a spiritual relationship with God. Abingdon Press. Coming in August. A covenant with God is a faithful promise of renewal, and none is more central to the Methodist identity than The Wesley Covenant Prayer first used by John Wesley in 1755 during a renewal service. Its central theme focuses on the way we can have a closer relationship with God and others through a heightened dedication to a serious faith. And now, modern congregations can experience a boost in their way of Christian living thanks to Wesley’s text and this accessible, churchwide campaign. Grace. It’s a game changer. And when neverending love comes from God, it sometimes feels like more than you can take. Why does God want to have a personal relationship with me? How can I fully experience and respond to God’s grace? What does “grace” really mean? In A Grace-Full Life, you’ll examine a Wesleyan understanding of grace for the common person. You’ll learn about various forms of grace— prevenient grace, justifying grace, sanctifying grace, and glorifying grace—and you’ll come away knowing how God’s grace truly works in your life. We live in a skeptical age. People— especially young people—express doubts about Christian faith. In this thoughtful eight-week study, Bishop Scott Jones partners with his son Rev. Arthur Jones to address hard questions about faith, religion, and the church: Can only one religion be true? Why is there suffering and evil? How can I believe in science and creation? How can I believe in a God I can’t prove? Are marriage, sex, and family life religious issues? Was Jesus’ resurrection real? Why do Christians disagree about so many things? Abingdon Press.

John Wesley was really all about the spiritual journey—taking steps and continually walking a path that transforms the heart and helps us grow into the likeness of Christ. This six-week study for small groups or a churchwide experience reinterprets Wesley’s idea of “Christian perfection,” helping participants develop a pattern of daily Scripture reading, prayer, and personal reflection. This is called The Wesley Challenge for a reason. This is a challenge I’m hoping that the Holy Spirit, and you, and me, and all of us will decide to go a little bit deeper in our faith. These twenty-one questions are not easy to answer. When John Wesley and his brother Charles and their friends began to use these questions to examine their lives and examine their spirituality, they didn’t want them to be easy questions. The whole point is to take us a little bit further.

Don Adams combines the mind of a scholar and the heart of a pastor to engage growing disciples in the central elements of a distinctively Wesleyan life of faith. He offers fresh insights into the life, words, and heart of John Wesley that make an important contribution to the vitality of ‘the people called Methodist’ in our own day. —James A. S

This revision of the Abingdon classic Genesis to Revelation Series is a comprehensive, verse-by-verse, book-by-book study of the Bible based on the NIV. These studies help readers strengthen their understanding and appreciation of the Bible by enabling them to engage the Scripture on three levels: • What does the Bible say? Questions to consider while reading the passage for each session. • What does the passage mean? Unpacks key verses in the selected passage. • How does the Scripture relate to my life? Provides three major ideas that have meaning for our lives today.

The meaning of the selected passages are made clear by considering such aspects as ancient customs, locations of places, and the meanings of words. The simple format makes the study easy to use. Includes maps and glossary with key pronunciation helps. Updates include new cover and interior designs, leader guide per matching participant book (rather than multiple volumes in one book), updated to 2011 revision of the New International Version (NIV) translation, updated references to The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible, biblical chapters on the contents page beside session lesson titles for at-a-glance overview of biblical structure, and larger divisions within the contents page to reflect macro-structure of each biblical book. Denominations from evangelical to mainline continue to experience deep divisions over universal social issues. The underlying debate isn’t about a particular social issue, but instead it is about how we understand the nature of Scripture and how we should interpret it. The world’s best-selling, most-read, and most-loved book is also one of the most confusing. In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton, one of the country’s leading pastors and Christian authors, addresses the hot-button issues that plague the church and cultural debate, and answers many of the questions frequently asked by Christians and non-Christians alike. Journey Through the Bible

Inspired by a fresh translation—the Common English Bible—this series stands firmly on Scripture and helps readers explore the emotional, spiritual, and intellectual needs of their personal faith. More importantly, they’ll be able to discover God’s revelation through readings and reflections. Each volume offers suggestions for leading a group and questions to facilitate class discussion. Abingdon Press.

Study the Bible book by book using the NRSV. Each 13-session volume: • Highlights pivotal points in the Scriptures. • Lifts up the Bible’s most significant stories, events, and people, describing historical and cultural settings. • Includes the original language and what the passage meant for its first readers. • Gives insight into possible life applications. • Maps out a daily plan for reading the Bible, verse by verse. Cokesbury.

A new approach to nurturing faith in teens Confirmation leaders and churches will find practical help for nurturing sustainable faith in the lives of teenagers in a way that values their faith formation process. Confirm is flexible, adaptable, and scalable, while at the same time engaging adult participation. Cokesbury.

Confirm Your Faith. Your Commitment. God’s Call. Too often confirmation has been downgraded to the role of a checkpoint along the faith journey. The Confirm family of resources reclaims confirmation as the first step on a journey that leads to a mature, adult faith. Confirm treats confirmation as more than a decision. Instead, it is the beginning of a conversation about what it means to be a Christian: living out your faith, your commitment, and God’s call. Confirm is an easy-to-follow and fully customizable confirmation program that can be used in any church setting and with a wide variety of schedules. You have the option to schedule your lesson choices and the tools to organize your own confirmation program over the course of a school year, a 3-year span, or in any other way that meets your needs—without having to purchase additional content. With flexible and easy-to-understand materials, Confirm provides students with the basic beliefs of a theologically sound, United Methodist faith while engaging them in creative and thought-provoking activities to help them internalize what they’ve learned. Confirm also embraces the importance of community in the journey of faith development, and provides materials to encourage cooperation with parents and mentors in the confirmation process and beyond. DIRECTOR GUIDE:

Provides direction for creating an effective discipleship path for teens during confirmation. With detailed instructions on how to integrate easily with your youth ministry program and other ministries in your church and tools for creating specific confirmation assessments and reasonable expectations for youth, pastor, parents, and confirmation leaders. TEACHING PLANS:

The fully customizable teaching book includes easy-to-follow lesson plans for 39 confirmation class sessions, lesson recommendations for a variety of time-frame options, and lesson planning templates, tools, and supplemental content. Sessions are organized around the following categories: Theology, History, Belonging in the Community of Faith, Making a Faith Commitment, and Understanding God’s Call.

MENTOR GUIDE:

The Mentor Guide provides an overview of the confirmation process and equips mentors with suggested relationship building ideas, as well as providing some of the dos and don’ts when taking on the role of mentor. A mentor doesn’t need to be a trained theologian or someone who has all the answers. Rather, a mentor is an adult who is mature in the faith and can walk alongside a young person on the confirmation journey. DVD:

The Confirm DVD has two styles of video, YouTube-style & Whiteboard sketch-style, both closed captioned and running 2–3 mins. each: 1) Unit overview, YouTube-style videos are fun, fast-paced, and engaging. Hosted by our friends at Blimey Cow. 2) Selected unit lessons utilize whiteboard sketch-style videos for deeper learning and reflection. PARENT GUIDE:

Provides an overview of confirmation and helps the parent and family establish their role in the process. The guide includes discussion starters, activities, and devotional suggestions for use at home. As teens prepare to take the vows of confirmation, they need to be surrounded by mature Christian adults who can love, guide, and nurture them. This love and nurturing begins at home, with the youth’s parent or guardian. FG17

The Groove Bible study series invites teens to learn the essentials of their faith, own their story, and engage the world in serving Jesus. Each topical study consists of four weekly sessions that are easy to lead and relate to life issues teens face. With up to 48 weeks available, Groove is great for Sunday and mid-week gatherings for both large and small groups as well as retreats. The student journal contains session-specific questions, background information, and daily devotions for each session. Abingdon Press. Student Journals, Each Leader Guides, Each

The Basics Michael Adkins Some alarmists are claiming that the Christian faith is in danger of becoming extinct. We can no longer rely on culture to support the passing on of faith in Jesus Christ to the coming generations. The Basics study is not a quick fix to this situation. It is a handcrafted tool that when used by compassionate, caring, and committed adults, will ignite youth’s imagination for God, the Scriptures, the faith community, and living a transformed life. It will likely raise more questions than it answers, and that’s intentional. Allow your teens the opportunity to leave with ideas and truths on which to reflect and wrestle as they use the daily devotionals provided in the Groove: The Basics Student Journal. 9781501807053 9781501807060

America’s Original Sin Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America Jim Wallis America’s problem with race has deep roots. Racism is truly our nation’s original sin. “It’s time we right this unacceptable wrong,” says best-selling author and leading Christian activist Jim Wallis. Fifty years ago, he was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered the topic taboo. His participation in the civil rights movement brought him back when he discovered a faith that commands racial justice. Yet we continue to suffer from the legacy of racism, and the church has been slow to respond. Probing yet positive, biblically rooted yet highly practical, this book shows people of faith how they can work together to overcome the embedded racism in America. Brazos Press. 9781587434006

NEW Living for Another More of Others, Less of You Brent Gambrell What did Jesus really mean when he said, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25 NIV)? In Living for Another, author and speaker Brent Gambrell calls the reader to realize that God has called us all to abundant life, but in order to have that, we must live a life for someone other than ourselves. Your life is not destined to be a cautionary tale of what could have been. Have an abundant life by living a life of voluntary loss; a life poured out intentionally for others. Live a life that pleases the One who gave his life for you. Live an abundant life when you live for another. Abingdon Press. Coming in September. 9781501841842

What Falls from the Sky is Esther’s fiercely honest, piercingly poetic account of a year without Internet—one woman’s desperate attempt at a reset. Esther faces her addiction to electronics, her illusion of self-importance, and her longing to return to simpler days, but then the unexpected happens. Conversation Starters NEW Venite A New Book of Daily Prayer Robert Benson

NEW Becoming Wise An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living Krista Tippett

The Latin word venite is an invitation given to pray the prayers of Christ. It is an invitation to pray the ancient prayer, until life becomes a prayer without ceasing. Best-selling author Robert Benson brings together deeprooted and traditional prayer practices of the Church in a volume for laypeople who want to practice daily prayer throughout the year in their own solitude. Like The Book of Common Prayer, Venite is a daily book of connecting to God for people of all Christian faiths. It crosses denominational lines in spirit and in practice. Over the thirteen years that Krista Tippett has hosted her award-winning and nationally beloved radio program and podcast, first under the title Speaking of Faith and now as On Being, the heart of her work has been to shine a light on the most extraordinary voices on the great questions of meaning for our time: scientists in a variety of fields; theologians from an array of faiths; poets, activists, and many others. In Becoming Wise, she distills the insights she has gleaned into a coherent narrative journey of what it means to be human. NEW Hallelujah Anyway Rediscovering Mercy Anne Lamott

The Abundance Narrative Essays Old and New Annie Dillard In recognition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s long and lauded career as a master essayist comes this landmark collection, including her most beloved pieces and some rarely seen work, rigorously curated by the author herself. The Abundance is quintessential Annie Dillard, delivered in her fierce and undeniably singular voice, filled with fascinating detail and metaphysical fact. The Abundance reminds us that Dillard’s brand of novelized nonfiction pioneered the form long before it came to be widely appreciated. Intense, vivid, and fearless, her work endows the true and seemingly ordinary aspects of life with beauty and irony, inviting readers onto sweeping landscapes, to join her in exploring the complexities of time and death, with a sense of humor. Ecco Press. 9780062432964

$17.00; $10.10

Full of Lamott’s trademark honesty, humor, and forthrightness, Hallelujah Anyway is a powerful exploration of mercy, its limitless (if sometimes hidden) presence, why we ignore it, and how we can embrace it. Profound and caring, funny and wise—it’s a hopeful book of hands-on spirituality. Lamott ventures to explore where to find meaning in life. She suggest we begin by “facing a great big mess, especially the great big mess of ourselves.” It’s up to each of us to recognize the presence and importance of mercy everywhere “within us and outside us, all around us” and to use it to forge a deeper understanding of ourselves and more honest connections with each other. Grounded Finding God in the World—A Spiritual Revolution Diana Butler Bass

Radical Spirit 12 Ways to Live a Free and Authentic Life Joan Chittister

The headlines are clear: religion is on the decline in America as many people leave behind traditional religious practices. Bass, leading commentator on religion, politics, and culture, argues that what appears to be a decline actually signals a major transformation in how people understand and experience God. The distant God of conventional religion has given way to a more intimate sense of the sacred that is with us in the world. This shift is at the heart of a spiritual revolution that surrounds us and that is challenging not only religious institutions but political and social ones. Bass invites readers to join this emerging spiritual revolution, find a revitalized expression of faith, and change the world. HarperCollins.

Feeling burnt-out from life, strung-out from social media, and put out by a society that always wants more from you? Beloved nun and social activist Joan Chittister offers a practical, character-building, and inspirational guide to help you take control of your emotional life and redirect your spiritual destiny. Drawing on little known, ancient teachings of the saints, Sister Joan offers a practical program with a series of twelve simple rules for healthy spiritual living. Chittister not only reminds us, but pleads with us, to develop enduring values by shifting our attention to how God wants us to live. Convergent Books. Coming in April. 9780451495174

NEW IN PAPERBACK Rising Strong The Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution. Brené Brown Social scientist Brené Brown’s pioneering research uncovered a profound truth: vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome— is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: we are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. Brown listened as a range of people shared their stories of being brave, falling, and getting back up. Random House

The Face of Water A Translator on Beauty and Meaning in the Bible Sarah Ruden In The Face of Water, Sarah Ruden brilliantly, elegantly celebrates and translates the Bible’s original languages and looks at how passages have been misunderstood over the centuries, at how the most commonly accepted English translations have been lacking in the intent of the original text. Ruden reveals both the poetry and lyricism—earthy, mysterious, infused with wit—that has made the Bible the compelling piece of literature it has been for more than a millennium. A dazzling reconsideration of the language and translation of both Old and New Testaments, from the acclaimed scholar and translator of classical literature. Random House. 9780307908568

NEW Being Brave A 40-Day Journey to the Life God Dreams for You Kelly Johnson

Beads of Healing Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness Kristen E. Vincent The first step in healing from trauma begins with telling one’s story. Many people are afraid to tell the story of their trauma; even with God. Survivors often carry deep spiritual wounds, thinking the trauma was God’s punishment or that God abandoned them. They may wonder how they can ever trust a God who allowed something so awful to happen. Vincent shares her personal story of childhood trauma and how Protestant prayer beads helped her find spiritual and emotional healing. In sharing her own story, she models how readers can name feelings of grief, shame, and anger and engage in honest conversations with God so they can begin to hear God’s words of healing and love. Upper Room Books. 9780835816359

$13.99; $9.79

In a forty-day devotional format, author and blogger Kelly Johnson invites you to consider a new way of thinking about what it means to be brave and challenges you to seek a greater intimacy with God and the people God has placed in your life. Through Scripture, stories, prayers, and thoughtprovoking questions, you will recognize the seeds of divinely inspired bravery and learn the strength found in community. Using letters of the word brave as a guide, Being Brave highlights what God’s Word has to say about the characteristics of bravery: Bold, Resilient, Authentic, Vulnerable, and Engaged and Empowered by the Spirit.
