WHERE WE LIVE

The City of Hurst is thrilled to announce phase three of the Utility Box Art Project. This year’s theme, “Pets and Wildlife of Hurst,” celebrates the furry, feathered, and wild residents that make our city special. From playful pups to majestic owls, artists have the chance to bring the beauty and charm of Hurst’s animal life to our streets!
We’re looking for bold, colorful designs that capture the joy of pets, the wonder of local wildlife, or the
unique connection between humans and animals. Selected artists will not only transform utility boxes into eye-catching works of art but also earn a $250 stipend for their creations.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, we want to see your ideas! Submissions are open to all DFW artists, with special consideration for Hurst residents. The deadline is midnight on April 1, 2025 — don’t miss this chance to leave your mark on Hurst.

The City of Hurst needs your help! Did you know that “flushable wipes” and other trash flushed down the toilet are one of the leading causes of sewer backups in our community?
Even if the wipes package says “flushable,” they should never be flushed. Just a small amount of household trash flushed down the toilet can clog pipes.
Items like wipes and paper towels do not dissolve when flushed down the toilet and will clog sewer pipes and pumping equipment. Pressure from blockages in the sewer system can cause backups into homes and businesses and overflow onto streets and into creeks through nearby manholes.
We care about your health and the health of the environment. Your actions make a difference! Please help us protect you, your family, and our community. You can help prevent costly plumbing repairs and higher utility rates!
Please report any and all immediate wastewater, water, traffic, or street problems to our 24/7 Public Works Dispatch at 817-7887212.
Texas weather is unpredictable. Know what to do when severe weather occurs, including severe flooding.
BE PREPARED FOR A THUNDERSTORM,

Help us empower today’s youth to be tomorrow’s entrepreneurs!
Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own, and operate their own business – a lemonade stand.
Each child that registers receives access to the Lemonade Day curriculum that teaches them lessons like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills
in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem which is critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some, and share some.
They can have a stand in their front yard or partner with a local business that has volunteered to be a “Sweet Spot Sponsor,” elevating the visibility of the lemonade stand and the business owner.
It’s important to properly dispose of hazardous waste to protect the environment and ensure our community’s safety. On October 12, you can bring your hazardous waste for collection. Please bring an ID and a Hurst utility bill.
Accepted items: automotive fluids (10-gallon limit), batteries, cleaners & degreasers, cooking oil, lawn/ garden/pool chemicals, light bulbs, and paint (limited to three five-gallon containers)
Not accepted: ammunition or explosives, appliances or electronics, building materials, bulk trash and yard waste, butane or propane cylinders, medicines or sharps, and tires
Document shredding will also be available as a way to help our community members prevent identity theft and protect personal information. Three (3) box limit, no larger than 15” x 12” x 10”, accepted— limited space. First come, first served.
6 Stones will be on-site collecting clothing donations from Hurst residents.
Concern for proper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste and other potential surface water pollutants is a concern to all. Should you become aware of any improper disposal of any stormwater or surface water pollutant, call the City’s hotline at 817-788-7212.

Capture water while it rains this spring to use on your landscape later! Join our workshop to learn how, then build your own rain barrel to take home for only $25.
Rainwater harvesting is great for North Texas because you can keep some of the rain we get during the spring and fall to use during our hot and dry summers. Even a small roof area can produce a usable amount of water during an average rainfall. From huge cisterns to small DIY barrels, capturing rainwater can be done by anyone. Attend this workshop to learn the ins and outs of rainwater harvesting and purchase a discounted barrel to take home!
Learn about:
• How much water your roof will produce in a year
• Where to put your rain barrel to capture the most water
• How to install a barrel
• How to hook up and use your new water source
• How to build your own 50-gallon rain barrel with just a few supplies from the hardware store
Registration and pre-payment are required for attendance. More than one person from your household can come to the workshop with the purchase of one barrel/ticket, but only one barrel/ticket per household, please. This workshop is in-person and includes a class about rainwater harvesting basics and a demonstration on how to build a barrel. After the class portion, you will get to build your own rain barrel to take home. This is an educational opportunity, and class attendance is required to get a barrel.
The workshop will be taught by Tarrant County Master Gardeners.
Controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk for West Nile virus, Zika virus, and Chikungunya viruses must be done on several fronts – education and prevention are at the forefront of those efforts.
Simple steps to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around your home
• Do not allow water to accumulate in the saucers of flowerpots, cemetery urns, or in pet dishes for more than two days.
• Get rid of tin cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools, or other containers that collect and hold water.
• Clean debris from rain gutters, remove standing water from flat roofs, and repair leaks around faucets and air conditioners.
• Change the water in birdbaths and wading pools at least once a week.
• Fill or drain puddles, ditches and swampy areas. Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps used to cover boats or pools, and arrange the tarp to drain the water.
How to reduce risk of getting West Nile Virus:
• Apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
• Dress in long sleeves and long pants when outside.
• Stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Drain standing water where mosquitoes breed; old tires, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters.

Members of the Hurst Police Department recognized with the Team Hurst award.
The City of Hurst is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 service awards, honoring the dedication and hard work of individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to the City’s growth and public safety.
The Team Hurst Award celebrates approximately 40 individuals from various departments, including the Fire Department, Police Department, Municipal Court, Information Technology, and Fleet Services. These teams have demonstrated exceptional teamwork in important projects like upgrading the City’s radio and operating systems, regionalizing jail services, and supporting the City of Euless’ municipal court as they enhance their facilities. Public safety has been identified as the top strategic priority by residents and business owners in recent surveys, and these award recipients have directly contributed to improving these services, making Hurst a safer place for all.
The Hurst Way Award honors three individuals who have consistently embodied the City’s core values of public service, excellence, and financial sustainability. This year’s recipients are Paul Brown, Managing Director of Finance & Accounting; Parker Paris, Water Production Crew Leader; and Chris Connolly, Executive Director of Economic Development & Tourism.
Paul Brown’s leadership in upgrading our financial system and securing a bond rating enhancement has been invaluable. Parker Paris has spearheaded initiatives that are significantly reducing costs for mandated Commercial Drivers License training. Chris Connolly consistently champions business finance efficiency and led efforts to cut energy costs at the Hurst Conference Center.
Finally, the Employee of the Year Award goes to Paul Conca, Parks Superintendent. Paul’s professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence set him apart. His ability to uphold the values of our organization, even when circumstances are difficult, is a testament to his exceptional character. Paul’s dedication to the City of Hurst Code of Ideals and his continuous drive to do the right thing, no matter the situation, have made a lasting impact on our team and the community.
Please join us in congratulating all the award recipients for their exceptional service and unwavering dedication to making Hurst a better place for everyone.
Last fall, Hurst was invited to take part in the Wings Across America project, a stunning mural initiative led by artist Andrea Holmes. As part of the larger Wings Across the World series, this project aims to celebrate the beauty of iconic birds through large-scale murals, with a goal of creating 100 murals worldwide. The journey begins in Texas, with 10 murals across the state, followed by one in each of the 49 other states, and 41 additional murals around the globe.
Hurst proudly became the fourth city in Texas to host a Wings Across the World mural, with Dallas set to follow. Holmes seeks out prominent, high-visibility locations for each mural—spaces that encourage community engagement and serve
as a living canvas for public art. When she spotted the large exterior wall of Café Medi at 420 Grapevine Hwy, she knew it was the perfect backdrop.
Holmes reached out to Jeff Brand, owner of Woodbridge Plaza Shopping Center, who was eager to bring the mural to life but faced funding limitations. That’s when the City of Hurst stepped in. After reviewing funding options, it was determined that the City’s Hotel/ Motel Tax could supplement private funding for the project. The owner contributed $6,000 to the project, while the City contributed $10,000. According to the Texas Tax Code, Hotel/Motel Tax dollars may be allocated to support the arts, including painting
and architectural enhancements— making the mural a perfect fit.
Despite challenges like unpredictable weather and dodging drive-thru traffic, Holmes brought her vision to life. The chosen bird species for Hurst’s mural? The barn swallow—a symbol of hope, family, and home. In many cultures, a barn swallow nesting on a property is considered a sign of good fortune, making it a fitting emblem for our community.
This mural not only adds to the visual vibrancy of Hurst but also reflects our city’s commitment to fostering art, connection, and community pride. Next time you’re near Café Medi, take a moment to appreciate this incredible work of art—and the meaning behind it.
The City of Hurst is modernizing its water metering system. Since October 2024, City contractors, Ameresco and their subcontractor, Second Sight Systems, have been evaluating pipe material at the water meter to meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead & Copper requirements. This is the first phase of our water meter replacement project, estimated to complete by March 2025.
The second phase of the water meter replacement project is estimated to begin in April 2025. Also in partnership with Ameresco and Second Sight Systems, new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meters will be installed for all utility customers. This upgrade will provide you with more detailed insights into your water usage, helping you track consumption and manage your monthly bill more effectively.
Over the next year, installation teams will systematically replace all residential and commercial water meters. Before installation begins in your area, you’ll receive detailed information in the mail.
• Work will take place Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with occasional Saturday installations if needed.
• Ameresco and Second Sight Systems staff will wear uniforms and drive vehicles with their company logos.
• A team member will knock on your door before beginning installation. If you’re home, they’ll explain the process and ask you to refrain from using water for about 30 minutes. If you’re not home, they’ll check to ensure water isn’t in use before proceeding.
Important Notes:
• Contractors will never enter your home.
• If supplies are limited, the new meter box may be installed first, with the AMI meter added later.
• Contractors will be properly identified with either the “Ameresco” or “Second Sight Systems” logos on their vehicles and uniforms.
• A customer portal will be available later on in the project.
More information on the water meter replacement project is available at hursttx.gov/AMI. If you have any questions, call the City of Hurst’s Utility Billing Department at 817-788-7040.
Thank you for your cooperation and support as we enhance our water metering system to serve you better!
