Program expands to 6 Stones in making healthy food more accessible in HEB

Good For You Pantry

Community member stocks up on fresh produce at Good For You Pantry

The City of Hurst is a proud supporter of 6 Stones Mission Network, a local nonprofit that has been serving residents in need within Hurst, Euless, and Bedford for 14 years. They provide programs like Community Powered Revitalization (CPR), Operation Back-to-School, and their New Hope Center, which provides HEB residents with emergency food, clothing, and many other resources.

WHERE WE LIVE | FALL/HOLIDAY 2023 8

6 Stones’ New Hope Center and the North Texas Healthy Communities’ Good For You Pantry have recently announced their new partnership, allowing greater access to produce and healthy foods for HEB residents. The partnership enhances 6 Stones’ efforts to provide emergency food and other resources by supplying the nonprofit’s pantry with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other available healthy items through walk-in and drive-thru food distribution services.

“We are all extremely fortunate to live in a caring and collaborative community,” Hurst City Manager Clay Caruthers says. “The Good For You Pantry epitomizes the cooperation between public, private, and non-profit entities in HEB. I am thankful to all our partners who help the City of Hurst fulfill its vision of being a community built on connection. Dr. Joe Harrington emphasized our community’s ability to imagine greatness, generate hope, and accomplish great things at this year’s HEB ISD Convocation event. I’m proud to be a part of the HEB community and to offer a helping hand, however we can, to support programs like the Good For You Pantry.”

The Good For You Pantry program is led by North Texas Healthy Communities—the outreach arm of Texas Health Resources that implements the Blue Zones Project and other well-being initiatives across the region. Housed in schools and community centers, the program allows area residents to choose their own fresh produce and other nutritious staples, at no cost, at convenient and trusted neighborhood locations. The 6 Stones pantry serves 4,500 families annually. This is the first time the Good For You Pantry program has expanded outside of Fort Worth to serve residents in greater Tarrant County. The expansion is funded by a grant from the American

Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), with funds administered by Tarrant County.

“The Good For You Pantry epitomizes the cooperation between public, private, and non-profit entities in HEB. I am thankful to all our partners who help the City of Hurst fulfill its vision of being a community built on connection.”

“Everyone should have access to fresh produce and other healthy foods, and we’re proud to partner with North Texas Healthy Communities to deliver this important resource to our community,” says Jennifer Leney, executive director of 6 Stones. “As we continue construction on our new building, our new affiliation with Good For You Pantry will allow us to continue to provide access to healthy foods for our neighbors.”

6 Stones is currently in the process of constructing a new facility with a planned opening in early 2024. Until the doors to their new facility open, the nonprofit will continue to provide food and services on a walk-in basis at 544 W. Pipeline Road in Hurst every Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.

In addition, drive-thru distributions of pre-packed Good For You Pantry bags will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pipeline location and fourth Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in the back parking lot of Cross City Church, 1000 Airport Freeway in Euless. Services are available only to Hurst, Euless, and Bedford residents.

Visit 6stones.org to learn more about the services 6 Stones provides to our community. 9 WWW.HURSTTX.GOV

Fire Prevention Week

October 8-14

October 8-14 is Fire Prevention Week this year, and we want to share some important ways you and your family can stay safe in case a fire occurs in your household.

your plan and reduce panic and confusion if a real emergency happens. It is essential to hold these drills at least twice a year to refresh everyone on the plan.

PLAN your escape route. Draw a sketch of your home’s floor plan, and identify key exits your family will utilize if a fire is present. Make sure to pick at least two escapes out just in case one is too dangerous to use. Additionally, choose a meeting place outdoors to meet up afterward, like by a tree or your mailbox.

PRACTICE at-home fire drills regularly. This will help your family familiarize themselves with

TEST your home’s smoke alarms. Maintaining functioning smoke alarms will enhance your family’s safety and can even prevent fires from occurring from the start. Ensure that batteries are replaced regularly and that your family knows what sound it makes when danger is detected.

October is a great time to refresh fire safety with your family! These are real-life emergencies that can happen anywhere, at any time.

You’re invited to join us for our annual Fire Department Open House! In ‘n Out will serve hamburgers onsite, and hot dogs will also be available. This is a great opportunity for your family to learn more about fire safety and show support for our fire department and first responders. We look forward to seeing you there!
