Hurst Dog Park Update
Over the winter, the contractor completed upgrades at the Hurst Dog Park. These include drainage improvements such as extra drain boxes, sod, and concrete flumes. We found attachments allowing the gates to become self-closing and self-latching, adding additional protection from dogs escaping into the parking lot.
With the completion of construction, the Dog Park will offer two runs each month, separated by weight. The small dog run is for dogs under 30 pounds, while the large dog run is open for all dogs. This rotation of runs allows the Parks Division to perform turf maintenance items such as aeration and fertilization without compromising safety. It also allows the turf to recover from the wear and tear of puppy feet. The runs will rotate on the first Wednesday of each month once the weekly maintenance is complete.
The Dog Park is the first new park in many years. We expect more visitors as the weather warms up, and we need everyone’s help to keep the park in “top dog” shape. How can you help? First, please pick up and dispose of dog waste in the provided waste stations. Secondly, help your dog be a “Super Dog” and don’t allow it to dig. Holes are a safety issue, and we want everyone to enjoy the park without fear of injury. Lastly, if you see something, say something. You can report maintenance concerns by calling 817.788.7222, emailing kweaver@hursttx.gov, or on the Where We Live app. If your concern is inappropriate behavior by dogs or humans, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Hurst Police Department at 817.788.7180 or 911.
We post inclement weather updates on the official Facebook page, Hurst Parks and Recreation. For a list of rules and hours of operation, please visit hursttx.gov/ hurstdogpark.

Lightning Detection Systems
Lightning is a dangerous and real threat in North Texas. When a storm rolls in, anyone outside can be in immediate danger. Too often, we rely on our eyes to alert us to the threat. At pools and athletic facilities, this usually means no one is watching the sky because they are too busy watching the action around them. However, at four parks, this is about to change!
On February 8, the Hurst City Council approved funding to install lightning detection systems at Central Park, Chisholm Park, Hurst Athletic Complex, and Hurst Community Park. The Parks Division identified parks in which multiple activities coincide. “These systems are similar to ones you’d find on a golf course,” says Kristie Weaver, Parks Director. “There is a horn that sounds for 15 seconds, along with a light that blinks until the lightning passes. The light stops once the danger passes, and the horn sounds again in three, 5-second intervals. We can link the system to our website so everyone can see where we are in the 30-minute countdown. We can also set on and off times, so the system is activated only during park hours.”
The City chose Earth Networks, a sole-source provider with systems nationwide, including North Texas. We anticipate installation by mid-May. The Parks Division is happy to answer any questions or concerns. The phone number is 817.788.7222, or email kweaver@hursttx.gov.

Must be 16 years of age by May 21 for all positions.
