FLOOD SAFETY TIPS

Texas weather is unpredictable. Know what to do when severe weather occurs, including severe flooding. Here are ways to prepare before a flood occurs and what to do during one.

Before the Flood

1. Check with the Engineering Department (817.788.7080) on the extent of past flooding in your area.

• City staff can tell you about the causes of repetitive flooding, what the city is doing about it and what would be an

2. Prepare for flooding by doing the following:

• Know how to shut off the electricity and gas to your house when a flood comes.

• Make a list of emergency numbers and identify a safe place to go.

• Make a household inventory and put insurance policies, valuable papers, medicine, etc. in a safe place.

• Report blockages in creeks, culverts, drainage ditches and storm drain inlets by calling Public Works at 817-788-7076.

3. Consider some permanent flood protection measures.

• Mark your fuse box to show the circuits to the floodable areas. Turning off the power to these floodable areas can reduce property damage and save lives.

• Consider flood protection alternatives such as flood walls or berms. Note that some flood protection

appropriate flood protection level. They can also visit your property to discuss flood protection alternatives.

• Develop a response plan—consult the American Red Cross website for information on creating an emergency preparedness plan.

• The American Red Cross has also published the brochure Repairing Your Flooded Home, which provides information on planning and preparing for a flood event as well as repairing after a flood event.

measures may require permits. Please check with the Engineering Division and/or Building Inspections for more information.

• A copy of Homeowner’s Guide to Retrofitting: Six Ways to Protect Your House from Flooding are available at no charge to download from FEMA.

4. Talk to the Engineering Division for information on financial assistance.

• If you are interested in obtaining more information on what you can do to prevent flood damage, or what funds may be available to assist you with mitigating flood damage to your property, contact the Engineering Division at 817.788.7080.

5. Get a flood insurance policy.

• Typically, homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, some owners have purchased flood insurance because it was required by the bank when they received a mortgage or home improvement loan.

During and After the Flood

• Get a flood insurance policy—it will help pay for repairs after a flood and, in some cases, it will help pay the costs of elevating a substantially damaged building.

• Don’t wait until the next flood to buy flood insurance protection. In most cases, there is a 30-day waiting period before the National Flood Insurance Program coverage takes effect.

• Contact your insurance agent for more information on rates and coverage.

1. Check with the Engineering Department (817.788.7080) on the extent of past flooding in your area.

• Do not wade through floodwaters due to the danger of pollutants, debris (nails, glass, etc) and animals (snakes, ants, etc.). Floodwaters are often murky and depth is hard to determine.

• Do not drive through floodwaters! Turn around, don’t drown! If emergency evacuation is necessary, please

heed the warnings of the emergency management and follow the instructions to evacuate—it saves lives of those around you and possibly of the emergency workers responding.

• Ask for a licensed electrician, plumber etc. to check or turn on your power, water, and/or gas.

The City of Hurst Public Works Department is a member of the Community Rating System through the National Flood Insurance Program. This information is provided as a resource for residents.

Property pride fosters sustainable community all can enjoy

Ensuring your property is well-taken care of is a major task for a property owner. At the City of Hurst, our goal is to be a helpful resource for you and your neighborhood. We are all about keeping our city clean and safe while creating a sustainable community for an enhanced quality of life for residents.

Here are some tips to help maintain your property and be a good neighbor:

• Keep weeds and grass shorter than eight inches in height. This will help prevent overgrowth in our neighborhoods.

• Maintain your garbage to prevent accumulation as this may become a fire hazard or become a menace to health, safety, or welfare. Do you have an excessive amount of garbage? Haul your garbage to one of our free landfill days happening the second Saturday of the month February through November from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. You can take your nonhazardous items to Republic Service’s Arlington Landfill for FREE! For more information, visit hursttx.gov/trash.

• Keeping your buildings and grounds in a clean and

safe condition prevents declining property value. This includes keeping exteriors in good repair.

• Follow the regularly scheduled trash and recycling pickup times for your neighborhood. Trash and recycling should be placed in the prescribed locations no later than 7 a.m. on the day of scheduled collection.

• Regular maintenance for pools or other water receptacles is necessary so that it doesn’t become a health concern for neighbors.

• Keep your property free of inoperative vehicles. They become an issue if they are on the property for more than 48 hours.

Property Pride

If you notice your neighbor going the extra yard to spruce up their property, nominate them for our Property Pride Award! We are all about recognizing citizen’s hard work and we want everyone to feel inspired by their property pride! You can recognize homeowners in Hurst for taking extra special care of their properties including painting, landscaping, and more.

Visit hursttx.gov/propertypride for more information and to fill out the online submission form

Garbage & Recycling Reminders

Make sure your trash and recycling materials are placed at your curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled pick-up days. Garbage can be placed in a trash bag or contained in a trash can. The total weight of garbage and container cannot exceed 50 pounds. To help avoid causing litter, make sure your garbage and recycling are placed in a container with a secure lid to prevent trash from blowing out.

Republic Services’ collection hours are between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. This means your trash pick-up is not considered “missed” for the day until after 7 p.m. Sometimes crews are running behind because of larger than usual trash set-outs, routes running in a different order, employee shortages, or a new driver learning a route. If your trash hasn’t been picked up by 7 p.m., submit a service request through the Hurst Where We Live mobile app or on our website

at hursttx.gov/servicerequest. You can also contact us the following morning at 817-788-7000, and we will work with Republic to send a crew back to your area.

Bulky objects for garbage collection can be placed with regular garbage on your normal pickup day. Bulky items include furniture, bedsprings, televisions, washer/dryer, etc. Tree limbs and brush must be bundled, no longer than four feet in length, and not to exceed 50 pounds. Special pickup for loose brush can be arranged by calling Republic Services at 817-332-7301.

Hurst Unveils

Building blocks of Hurst come alive through creative canvases

Artists were challenged to encapsulate the essence of the community’s evolution through time. The artists embraced the theme wholeheartedly, each contributing their interpretation of the building blocks that have shaped Hurst into the thriving city it is today. The designs highlight the contributions of individuals, organizations, industries, and the educational systems that have shaped Hurst’s history.

These once-ordinary utility boxes have been transformed into colorful canvases that radiate unmistakable “Hurst vibes.” The phase two artworks are visually stunning, showcasing Hurst’s history, iconic landmarks such as Bell Helicopter and L.D. Bell High School, elements of youth within our educational institutions, and more.

You can find more information on the artists and the stories behind their artwork on our website. The platform offers a map of the transformed utility boxes and photos of each artist posing with their work.

The Utility Box Art Project is a testament to Hurst’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and culturally rich community. We’re thrilled to showcase artistic expressions that not only beautify the City but also serve as a source of inspiration, encouraging residents to reflect on their City’s past while embracing the limitless possibilities of its future. Hurst, once again, proves that art has the power to unite, inspire, and build a stronger sense of community.

Fight the Bite

Mosquito control management

Controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk for West Nile virus, Zika virus, and Chikungunya viruses must be done on several fronts – education and prevention are at the forefront of those efforts.

Simple steps to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around your home.

• Do not allow water to accumulate in the saucers of flowerpots, cemetery urns, or in pet dishes for more than two days.

• Get rid of tin cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools, or other containers that collect and hold water.

• Clean debris from rain gutters, remove standing water from flat roofs, and repair leaks around faucets and air conditioners.

• Change the water in birdbaths and wading pools at least once a week.

• Fill or drain puddles, ditches and swampy areas.

• Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps used to cover boats or pools, and arrange the tarp to drain the water.

How to reduce risk of getting West Nile Virus.

• Apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

• Dress in long sleeves and long pants when outside.

• Stay indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

• Drain standing water where mosquitoes breed; old tires, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters.

Homeowners encouraged to prevent birds from nesting on their property

Did you know that over 1,000 species of birds, including herons and egrets, are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918? This law prohibits the harming of birds, along with their nests and eggs. This law also includes the protection of nuisance rookeries, once established. A rookery occurs when a large number of herons or egrets nest together in a concentrated area (US Fish & Wildlife). Many consider rookeries a nuisance due to the noise, odor, and significant amounts of excrement covering the area below the trees.

The best way to deter nesting birds is to thin tree canopies by 25%-30%. The thinning of tree canopies exposes the birds and their nests to the elements and predators. Homeowners should contact a professional tree care company for assistance. Residents can watch for the early arriving birds, such as the yellow-crowned night herons, and begin utilizing approved scare tactics

to discourage birds from nesting in trees. Noisemakers and high-pressure water nozzles aimed at the trees make for an uncomfortable environment for the birds. Scare-eye balloons or other shiny, moving objects may also deter the birds from nesting.

Once nesting birds produce eggs, all scare tactics must cease. As these birds are federally protected, it is illegal to kill, harass, move, or otherwise disturb the birds when they are actively nesting. However, routine property maintenance can continue. As rookery season can last for several months, we encourage all residents to be vigilant in preventing nesting birds on their property.
