Get Active and Get Involved! A publication from the Hurst Senior Activities Center
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Senior Pipeline Tidings…by Michelle Varley Leading a physically active lifestyle can have a significant impact on well-being. Exercise is beneficial for physical and mental health and can improve quality of life. It is important to choose activities that are suitable and enjoyable. Exercise can be done on a one-to-one basis or in a small group. Some people may like to try a few different activities to see what suits them best. The senior center offers a range of organized exercise and physical activity sessions such as seated and floor exercises, tai chi, yoga, dance, aquatics, and personal training. Exercise can also be done at home through regular activities such as walking, gardening and housework. Benefits of exercise and physical activity include:
improving general cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease reducing the risk of some types of cancer, stroke and type 2 diabetes improving physical function by maintaining muscle strength and joint flexibility helping to keep bones strong and reducing the risk of osteoporosis improving cognition by slowing down mental decline and increasing memory ability improving sleep creating opportunities for social interaction and reducing the feeling of isolation reducing the risk of falls by improving strength and balance which helps to counteract the fear of falling enhanced confidence about the body and its capabilities
See the Senior Pipeline for exercise classes and other activity based opportunities for you to GET ACTIVE and GET INVOLVED!

Caring Covers Our Senior Center members are like a close -knit family. When one of our members is sick, has lost a loved one or is just having a rough time, we want to reach out to them. Our Knot-a-Lot group wants to share their “knotted” creations. Please advise the front desk staff if you know of a fellow member who is in the hospital, grieving or feeling down, so that a “Caring Cover” prayer shawl can be shared with them.
