30 YEARS OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE Not all design centers are created equal. This year the DCH building as we know it today celebrates 30 years of design excellence.

Although the three-building center was originally built in the mid 70’s, it’s the 1985 expansion and addition of the 10-story tower that we celebrate today – 30 years later.

The Original Design Center

Originally developed by the Dallas Market Center Co. in 1974, The Houston Decorative Center, as it was known originally, was a three-building, 128,000 square-foot center with 26 showrooms representing 450 merchandise lines. It was the first of its kind in Houston.

Expanding on a Great Tradition

It was the early 80’s and Houston was booming! The Houston Decorative Center planned to triple in size with the addition of a 10-story tower. This new extension was estimated to add about 340,000 square-feet of space and cost more than $34 million. The plans called for a landscaped courtyard to interconnect the new tower to the existing buildings. A 150-seat restaurant and 700-car garage were also in the works. Only a few showrooms featured then still reside in the building today. They are Walter Lee Culp & Associates (now Culp & Associates), S. Harris & Co. (now under Fabricut) and David Sutherland and Waitman Martin Inc. (now David Sutherland.)

Excitement Building

Trammel S. Crow, Chairman of the Board and Lucy Billingsley, President of the Dallas Market Center Development and Management Organization, which owned the center, officially announce the new expansion.

According to Crow, the new structure would increase expansion needs and serve contract customers too.

Before the expansion, the center’s primary focus was residential. Billingsley stated, “The tenant demand for expansion and the timing from the city’s point of view make this the ideal time to begin construction.” It’s spring 1983 and work has begun on the Decorative Center development. First phase of the expansion focused on

relocating the main entrance from Woodway Drive to Sage Road and providing new parking facilities. Tower construction soon followed.

The Expansion Envisioned

The changing direction of the center was symbolized by the center’s new name and proposed floor layout. The name of the center changed from Decorative Center of Houston to Decorative/Design Center of Houston. The vision was to categorize merchandise so that specific resources would be gathered together on specific floors.

Floors one and two were to be public space unified to form lobbies and atria; floors three through five focused on fabrics; floors six through eight offered expansion to existing showrooms; and floors eight through ten were to be devoted to contract furnishings. There was some talk of adding two more floors to the tower with future floor expansion to the original three buildings. There were also original plans of expansion to 30 floors.

Talk of the Trade

Decorative Center of Houston had its grand opening January 16 – 18, 1985. Events for the three-day celebration included a keynote address to nearly 4,000 attendees by architect Charles Moore. Moore designed the centers space that boasted three fountains and the Accolades restaurant, which had an abstract yachtlike structure in a pool of water. Visitors participated in showroom events like panel discussions on aspects of facility planning and how to select and work with a designer. Houston Home and Garden and Texas Homes hosted evening receptions. At the time of the opening, Decorative Center was the only building where designers could see the greatest number of interior design resources under one roof.

Parties, Parties, Parties

With the new expanded space came events and parties. Houston’s social set had a brand new venue that was expertly designed and provided space for large events. The Accolades restaurant hosted and catered many events in their fantasy boat pavilion space. The first level gallery space was (and still is) big enough for a 400-person seated dinner and was the premier space in town for elegant and sophisticated events. Famous events included Theater Under The Stars’ opening Gala, The Blue Bird Gala, Chocolate Bayou Theatre Group Gala and the Houston Advertising Federation Gala.

The Next Evolution - Cohen Design Centers

In 2001, The Decorative Center was purchased for $42 million by New York developer Charles S. Cohen, who owned two other similar projects at the time: the Decoration and Design Building in Manhattan and the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. In addition to the designer tenants, about 15% of the space was occupied by a variety of companies. Cohen said having the regular office space in the project creates a good tenant mix that makes the building more diverse. Cohen’s purchase of the Decorative Center marks an important milestone in creating a major network of home and office furnishing centers to serve the design community from coast to coast.

“Our goal was to position Decorative Center Houston as this region’s leading resource for fine, traditional and contemporary contract and residential furniture, architectural products, floor coverings, wall coverings, lighting, kitchen and bath products and accessories,” said Cohen.

High Design

Decorative Center Houston is the preeminent destination in Southern Texas for high design and luxury home décor. The epicenter of the design industry in our community, DCH houses almost 40 showrooms featuring the finest furniture, fabrics, lighting, floor coverings, wall coverings, and accessories from over 1,200 interior product lines.

Better Than Ever

From the time Cohen purchased the building he was resolute in updating and upgrading the exterior and interior of the center. Cohen believes, “You can buy a building and leave it as it is,” he said. “But it doesn’t make it better.” In 2003, he completed a $5 million first floor renovation, adding new Terrazzo flooring, glass accents and updating of the concierge area. In 2012, he spent $1.5 million to add two new floors to the parking garage, which made way for over 200 new parking spaces. In 2013, Cohen envisioned the multi-million dollar entrance makeover to enhance the magnificence of the center. The transformations of the main plaza fountain and courtyard areas created a new, striking and inspiring entryway to the building.

The completed look features a dramatic landscape with 20-foot tall palm trees, beautiful blossoming gardens and a runway-like lighted esplanade. The most magnificent part of the renovation is the elevated infinity fountain. The custom designed innovative dancing water feature greets you with a cascading waterfall and dazzling lights. It’s a true work of art and a real source for some design inspiration. Coming for 2015 is updated interior lighting and flooring plus new garage elevators.

The Next 30 Years

Cohen believes, “What designers do is very special.

I like to say that design allows someone to express their individuality; you don’t want to be exactly the same as the next person. You want to have your own identity. So designers need to feel special, because what they do is special.” Going forward, as we partner with luxury iconic brands, we can’t wait to find out what adventures are in store for the next 30 years. FROM A WHITE SILK YARN Join Andrea Favaretto Rubelli, CEO, Donghia and Co-CEO, Rubelli as he narrates the unique exhibition created by the Rubelli Design Studio in Venice, presenting seven amazing installations whose single common denominator is a thread of white silk. Each piece in the exhibit is a very personal work of art, created by each of the designers of Rubelli, yet all based on a warp made of the exact same silk yarn, the noblest of fibers and a key feature in Rubelli creations.

White, a non-color color, allows each artist to create in total freedom.

Rubelli started his career with his family’s firm, Rubelli S.p.A., the 125-year-old textile company based in Venice, Italy.

He modernized the company’s computer infrastructure, managed the purchasing and warehouse operations as well as every aspect of the Rubelli weaving mill located in Como, Italy. He had an integral role in Rubelli’s acquisition of Donghia in 2005, and five years later, became Donghia’s CEO. Since then, Andrea has focused on strengthening Donghia’s infrastructure while enhancing the Company’s product offerings and custom capabilities.

Rubelli is on the Board of the Decorative Furnishings Association and divides his time between New York and Venice.

moved to London and attended Christie’s Fine and Decorative Arts Connoisseurship Program through the University of Glasgow where she received her Masters of Letters with merit in the History of Art and Connoisseurship.

After receiving her Masters, she began dealing art in Los Angeles and worked in the Pacific Design Center where she designed hotel art installations around the world. In 2009, Xavier started the Ligné Agency, representing a broad range of clients including interior, lighting, and product designers all around the world. She recently opened a showroom in Miami and has also launched the luxury lifestyle publication Ligné Magazine, which focuses on design, fashion, art, architecture and the social scene. Xavier oversees offices in Los Angeles, Sao Paulo and in her hometown of Houston, where she and her husband reside in the Historic Heights District.

Thursday, April 30 through October 23, Suite 107 Decorative Center Houston is pleased to present Circumstantial Evidence by Durston Saylor. Saylor is one of the leading architectural photographers practicing today. His work has been published in books and magazines internationally and he has been instrumental in defining the image of contemporary interior design and architecture for the past 25 years.

Saylor is widely recognized for his twenty-year association with Architectural Digest and has won many photography awards. When Architectural Digest wanted a particularly prime property luxuriously photographed, the magazine often commissioned awardwinning Saylor for the job. He has snapped everything from fashion powerhouse Donna Karan’s getaway in the British West Indies to movie director Oliver Stone’s Manhattan apartment.

Saylor’s photographs frame the elemental aspects of their subjects and focus attention on their materiality, their contexts, and their implications. Saylor’s photographs have helped define the broader cultural context of late 20th century design. His photographs have been fundamental in the ongoing dialogues of the interior design movements (classicism, eclecticism, and modernity) and the growing incorporation of nature and natural elements in our homes, workplaces and life. Saylor’s photographs capture the work of this incredibly dynamic time in an indelible way that continues to resonate.

“Circumstantial Evidence” presents Saylor’s architectural work in the context of his current personal investigations of form, color and texture in a variety of nonarchitectural subjects. In the exhibition, Saylor displays over 20 large format “abstractions” derived from frescos, signage fragments and other ephemera. These astonishingly detailed, intimate investigations reveal his photographic process and affinity for capturing the essential elements of his chosen subjects. The abstractions are presented with many notable photographs of the interiors he has photographed throughout his career and the combination of the two different subjects provides you the viewer an opportunity to see the inner process of a master of the photographer’s art.
