We are so excited to welcome you all to the very first edition of TIPs! Trauma-Informed Parents. I know many of you will think of yourselves as Therapeutic Parents (like we do), but it's all interchangeable, so don’t worry. 😊 So, whether you are an Adopter, Foster Parent, Kinship Carer/ Special Guardian, Step-parent, or Bio parent of a child who is neurodiverse, you will find a whole ton of useful articles and resources in this magazine.

We can’t wait to share with you all the helpful tips we have acquired over the years (taught to us by our children!) …and don’t worry there aren’t going to be lots of ideas and theories without practical strategies and insight. Meet the Team!

The Centre of Excellence in Child Trauma is made up of a team of experts who have essential real-life experience. We are Adopters, Foster Parents and Bio parents of neuro diverse children, and also work as professionals in the field.

Sarah Naish is a Therapeutic Parent, an Adopter of five siblings, former Foster Parent, retired Social Worker, Best selling international Author, Keynote Speaker and founder of three Independent Therapeutic Fostering Agencies.

Sair Penna is a Therapeutic Parent, Trainer, and Therapeutic Parenting Coach. Director of NATP, and Independent Panel Chair for two Therapeutic Fostering Agencies.

"People Don't Get It" - The Isolation of a Therapeutic Parent

I

t is one thing to be struggling with a problem: It is quite another to feel not only utterly alone with that problem, but also

blamed and judged for how you are trying to handle the problem. I started feeling isolated about six months after my children came home to me. It took me a while to notice that this was indeed the case. Maybe because I was just so busy. But gradually I realised that other parents had slidey eyes when talking to me. They didn’t seem too keen on chatting at the school gates, they just weren’t comfortable. One parent even said to me once, ‘Don’t you feel bad taking other people’s children?’

It's not only difficulties in making and keeping friends, but also just the day-to-day interactions.

Nowadays, I am frequently walking my five dogs. We make quite a spectacle. Very often, people will stop and chat and smile. They will pet the dogs and say things like ‘You’ve got your hands full haven’t you’? Not once did this happen ever with my 5 children. Then, people crossed the road to avoid us.

Walking into a restaurant meant people huffed and sighed, anticipating a horrible rowdy bunch. (They weren’t. They were always great, as long as food kept arriving). Now, when I look back, I feel desperately sad for the old me.

The one who anticipated exciting new friendships with other parents, play dates and cosy coffees. More and more we were on the side-lines.

More and more I found myself on the defensive.

Explaining why my children behaved the way they did, how I was trying to help them. But then, finally, I stopped. I could not be bothered to keep justifying myself to everyone constantly. I no longer felt like explaining away my children’s behaviours to ignorant parents who only wanted to indulge in a bit of Top Trump parenting or blame and judgement. Even, to some extent, family fell away. They didn’t want the turmoil that went with the busy visits and full-on tantrums. I didn’t even blame them really.

But I did get lonely. I have never felt more alone than when I was desperately struggling and no one at all was there to even listen, let alone help. Before I became antisocial, I did really want to be part of the gang. But when the gang rejects us, we reject them back. Before we know it, we are caught in a cycle of withdrawal, sadness and loneliness, determined not to take any risks with new friendships.

What Can I DO About It? Have a good look at the people who are around you. Who is supporting you on your journey? Who is indulging in a bit of patronising blame and judgement? Who is quietly getting on with looking after their equally tricky children?

Make time to welcome people into your life who ‘get it’. Yes, I know exactly what happens… you find a nice little group that looks they understand and then you chicken out at the last moment, or instead, choose to spend valuable time staring in to space to recover from the latest trauma. But here’s the thing. TIPs just like you are unlikely to just knock on your door one day and ask you to come out to play.

We have to brave, and keep being brave until we have ‘our people’!

the Therapeutic Parents Facebook group to see just how many parents are thinking the same thoughts and experiencing the same issues.

At the NATP, parents tell us that the feeling of isolation is the most debilitating problem they face. This is why we started to hold Listening Circles and link parents up together. The only real antidote to isolation is to connect with people on the same page as you. Someone who does not need a two-day explanation about what a ‘bad day’ means.

No parent of children with additional needs, needs to be isolated because of differences in parenting style, and the challenges we face.

Trauma-Informed Parent?

You may be an Adopter who thought their child had been removed early enough for there to be no problems and was then left reeling when all kinds of issues started happening, but no one seemed to know what to do. You may be a Foster Parent who has successfully raised birth children and wanted to give something back. Then you might have been blindsided by completely different behaviours and the way in which the child thinks and sees the world.

Perhaps you are a Kinship Carer or Special Guardian who has stepped in to offer help to a family member. Then you may find yourself tangled up in a system which seems confusing and where the expectations are too high or feel unreasonable. On top of that, no one seems to be talking to you about the effects of trauma on the children they are caring for.

Maybe you are a birth parent or biological parents of a child who may have experienced difficulties during pregnancy or shortly afterwards. As the child grows this parent becomes aware that their ISSUE 1

child sees the world differently.

Perhaps there are sensory issues, or maybe there are diagnosis such as autism or ADHD. You might be a step-parent whose step-child has experienced lots of change and difficulties in their life, and as a result you are struggling to form positive relationships or overcome challenges which affect the whole family. Or maybe, just maybe, you are one of the new type of Therapeutic Parents, a parent of neurotypical children but realises this is a better way of parenting. More empathy, more stability, higher levels of reflection, and a more well-rounded child. It is almost always parents who never thought they would be in this position and very quickly need to get on board with a different style of parenting, which is more effective for their child.

What is the difference between Trauma Informed Parenting and Therapeutic Parenting?

Trauma Informed Parenting (TIP) or Therapeutic Parenting (TP) are the same style of parenting and are interchangeable terms which are commonly used for people who are looking after children who have suffered some kind of trauma, as a result of early life

neglect and/or abuse, or from other traumatic events.

The only difference is where a parent has a neuro typical child who has not suffered any form of abuse. They would refer to their parenting style as Therapeutic Parenting rather than Informed Parenting.

How does TIP work?

TIP is a different way of life. Parents need to LIVE as TIPs with their children. It is not something we can choose to dip in and out of. The therapeutic parent will live a life which is well structured with strict routines and boundaries. Where a child has suffered trauma, there is no emotional room for surprises, spontaneous outings or uncertainty. Therapeutic Parenting is also very effective for securely attached children, so there does not need to be any conflict in parenting style, if a parent also has securely attached, or neuro typical children alongside children who have experienced trauma.

recover from the trauma that they have experienced. With a neuro-diverse child, who may have sensory issues, or finds it difficult to self-regulate (calm themselves), the aim is to help the child to live in a world which can seem overwhelming and frightening.

TIPs achieve this by developing new pathways in the child's brain to help them o link cause and effect, reduce their levels of fear and shame, and to support them to start to make sense of their world. Therapeutic parenting mainly differs from other parenting styles because it has an enhanced level of therapeutic responses and empathy within the parenting style. The school run can be potentially stressful at the best of times for both child and parent and this can be magnified if your child is experiencing Emotionally Based School Anxiety.

Children who

experience this may find it difficult to attend school for many reasons. and sometimes it takes a while to figure out the reasons. To allow your child to go in to school in a regulated state there may not be a quick fix, however there are some strategies you can use which will help to take the pressure out of the situation for both you and your child.

ISSUE 1

Contact the school - let them know what is happening, and that you hope to be in as soon as reasonably possible., Clear your diary if possible, I know this is not ideal but if you need to be somewhere and your child is refusing to move, your stress levels are likely to go up and your child will pick up on this.

The less pressure you put on yourself, the more your frustration will reduce and you will radiate some level of calm which will help with coregulating your child. School staff may then be able to help, a trusted adult that your child has a connection with may be able to support with positive distraction to a favourite activity they will be doing that day, or something that they are particularly interested in. If this works. great! If it doesn't, then you may be in for a longer wait (see next point)

destroying. This unmet developmental need will remain unmet without regular relationship repair. This can be extremely difficult for many parents as behaviours exhibited by the neuro diverse child are often contrary to their own moral code.

Understandably, parents and carers may fall back on ‘shaming’ the child.

Therapeutic parents depersonalise these behaviours and recognise them as a mode of communication. The parent can then offer genuine relationship repair as they consciously respond to this unmet developmental need instead of emotionally reacting to the presenting behaviours.

Hold the space for your child - sit with your child, stay fairly quiet, let them know that you are there if they need you, use empathic commentary where appropriate, let your child have the time and space to co-regulate with your support.

The child may be able to regulate themselves enough to either go in to school with support, or be able to tell you why they feel anxious about going into school.

If a resolution is needed before the child enters the school, it is worth speaking to the teacher/head teacher at this point and making a plan. If in the case your child cannot attend school you should consult with your child's GP on the best way forward and keep the school informed.

A Kinship Carer Speaks Out.

Rachael* shares how difficult the last year has been in her new life as a ‘Kinship Carer’ to Archie* her Grandson.

I

never expected to be a full-time parent again! When my daughter’s son, Archie was born, my daughter had already fallen into a life where drugs and alcohol

were rife. Despite my best efforts to intervene and to take care of my grandson, my daughter kept moving around and it became increasingly difficult to keep Archie safe. One day, out of the blue, Social Services rang me and asked me to take Archie immediately because his living conditions were so unsafe. I agreed straight away and left my job in teaching. Archie was one month old.

My first priority was getting all the things that Archie needed. I was given a second-hand baby car-seat by Social Services. I was suddenly on a limited income and had to beg, borrow and steal whatever I could from anybody. I was very lucky. I have kind friends and neighbours, so I didn’t actually have to steal anything! I did get an allowance after a few weeks, but it was much lower than my salary.

I thought I was just a grandmother offering to look after my grandson, but from day one there seemed to be a whole new raft of rules and regulations that I had no idea about. I was not only expected to know about these rules, but also adhere to them without question! The social workers and health visitors were naturally concerned about Archie’s growth and development, as was I. Every area of my life was probed and prodded. Suddenly I was told I had to transport Archie to a contact centre 20 miles away to see my daughter three times a week.

I was told I was no longer his grandmother but a foster carer! I've never fostered, I never asked to be ISSUE 1

ffoster carer. They said I had to undergo an assessment. That assessment only finished three months ago. During the whole time the assessor kept saying that I might not pass. I was trying to bond with my grandson and give him the best care whilst being threatened that if I didn't meet up to expectations he would be taken away. What kind of life is that? When I questioned all this with the social worker they told me I had to fit into the new way of working and that that is the way things are done. I had no training on the effects of drugs and alcohol on my little grandson. But they did send me on a course about child development. I had raised three children of my own and had worked as a nursery nurse and teacher. I was gobsmacked.

The last year has been emotionally frightening and draining. I have felt so utterly alone at times and completely baffled by a system that wanted me to step in and help, and then seemed to do everything it could to undermine me or make me give up. I have had three different social workers and Archie has had two.

Finally, I did go to the foster panel and got approved to apply to the court to become Archie’s ‘Special Guardian’. This means that I will have ‘parental responsibility’ and be able to make decisions for Archie’s future.

The whole sorry saga has been confusing, sad and overwhelming. My relationship with my daughter is at an all time low. Throughout the whole process I felt like I had no one in my corner, no one who actually understood what I was going through. When I found The National Association of Therapeutic Parents, I went to a Listening Circle and met two other grandparents, just like me, but they were out the other side. Without their help and support I don’t know what I would have done. I nearly gave up at times, but when I look at my darling Archie, I feel it is all worthwhile. *names have been changed to protect anonymity.

Level 3 Diploma in Therapeutic Parenting This is a Level 3 online customised qualification accredited by the nationally recognised awarding body CACHE NCFE under their NCFE accreditation. It covers basic and advanced strategies of therapeutic parenting and takes a year to complete.

This has a progression route to the Award in Therapeutic Parent Coaching accredited with NCFE CACHE.

Level 3 Award/Diploma in Therapeutic Parent Coaching Two new additions to our qualifications is the Level 3 online customised qualification accredited by nationally recognised awarding body CACHE NCFE under their CACHE accreditation. This enables the learner to gain the knowledge and coaching techniques in order to become a therapeutic parenting coach.
